Trailer and Poster For “The Settlers” Released

the-settlersDebut writer-director Felipe Gálvez asserts himself as a revelatory new cinematic voice with The Settlers, a searing and indelible take on the Western. Blending historical specificity with vivid visual style, this Cannes Un Certain Regard FIPRESCI Prize winner creates a singular immersive vision, arresting in both content and form.

The film follows three horsemen at the turn of the 20th century who embark on an expedition across the Tierra del Fuego archipelago at the behest of a wealthy landowner, tasked with securing his vast state-appointed property. Accompanying a reckless British lieutenant and an American mercenary is mestizo marksman Segundo, who comes to realize, amidst rising tensions within the group, their true mission is to murderously “remove” the indigenous population.

Set against stunning mountain landscapes, Chile’s Best International Feature Film entry to the 96th Academy Awards is a visceral reckoning with national myth and the attendant violence. Painterly yet piercing, this acclaimed frontier epic turns a bold eye to the past, daring to reimagine its depiction in the present and for the future.

Felipe Gálvez (b. 1983) is a Chilean filmmaker, writer and editor based in Paris. The Settlers (2023) is his debut feature. His previous works includes the short film Rapaz (2018), which also premiered in Cannes as part of the Critics’ Week program. His other short films have been awarded by festivals around the world. As an editor, Felipe collaborated with filmmakers such as Marialy Rivas, Kiro Russo and Alex Anwandter, among others.

Joel McHale Returns to Host 51st Annual Saturn Awards

saturn-awards 2024The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films has announced that actor, comedian, and host Joel McHale (star of Animal Control and Community), will return as host of the 51st Annual Saturn Awards on Sunday, February 4, 2024 at the L.A. Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel.

The Saturns will once again be live-streamed on Electric Entertainment’s premium OTT app and FAST channel, ElectricNOW, and will include exclusive interviews from the Red Carpet, from the winner’s press walk, and from behind-the-scenes with genre luminaries.

Presented and produced by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films in collaboration with Electric Entertainment’s ElectricNOW, the Saturn Awards are the only awards show that has been honoring the best in genre entertainment since 1972.

Academy President Robert Holguin and Saturn producers Bradley and Kevin Marcus comment, “We are thrilled to have Joel McHale host the Saturn Awards for the second year in a row. With his remarkable talent, dry wit, and acerbic humor, he embodies the spirit of the Saturn Awards tradition as Hollywood’s entertaining and irreverent awards show. The Academy is truly fortunate to have him as the host for this momentous 51st annual celebration.

This year’s show is dedicated to the memory of the Saturn Awards’ dear friends, acclaimed actor and former Saturn Awards host, Lance Reddick, (most well-known for his roles in “Bosch” and the “John Wick” franchise) and legendary filmmaker William Friedkin, (Oscar winning director of “The Exorcist,” and “The French Connection”).

In addition to the annual award categories, the award show will present Special Saturn Awards Honorees from past, present, and future winners. Christopher Nolan will receive The Visionary Award, presented by Emily Blunt at the Awards show. Other special awards will be announced in the coming weeks.
