The documentary “Sugarcane” is now screening online from January 25-28 during 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

Directed by Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie, the film is stunning tribute to the resilience of Native people and their way of life- SUGARCANE, the debut feature documentary from Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie- is an epic cinematic portrait of a community during a moment of international reckoning.

Set amidst a ground-breaking investigation into abuse and death at an Indian residential school, the film empowers participants to break cycles of intergenerational trauma by bearing witness to painful, long-ignored truths – and the love that endures within their families despite the revelation of genocide.

In 2021, evidence of unmarked graves near an Indian residential school run by the Catholic Church in Canada sparked a national outcry about the forced separation, assimilation, and abuse many children experienced at this network of segregated boarding schools designed to slowly destroy the culture and social fabric of Indigenous communities.

2024 Sundance Film Festival Announces Short Film Award Winners

Tonight at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival the short film jury awards were announced during the Shorts Awards Party presented by Argo and WeShort at The Park in Park City.

The Festival, which kicked off on January 18 and runs through January 28 in person and across the country online, has long been known as the premiere showcase of short filmmaking talent. The Short Film Grand Jury Prize, awarded to one film in the program of 53 shorts selected from 12,098 submissions, went to The Masterpiece, directed and written by Alex Lora Cercos. This year’s Short Film jurors are Christina Oh, Danny Pudi, and Charlotte Regan – all of whom are Festival Alumni in honor of the Festival’s 40th Edition.

“This has been another amazing year for shorts – most of the filmmakers in the program are coming to Sundance for the first time ever, and we are excited to get their films to audiences and the film industry.” said Mike Plante, Senior Programmer, Short Films. “The award winners are a great reflection of the vibrant ideas and styles that filmmakers are inventing in these times within the short form.”

Co-Creators Kevin Eastman Of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turbles & David Avallone Team With Ben Bishop and Troy Little To Launch New Series “Drawing Blood”

drawing-bloodNinja Turtles series and former publisher of the popular Heavy Metal magazine—teams up with writer David Avallone (Elvira, Batwheels), artists Ben Bishop (The Aggregate, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin), and Troy Little (Rick and Morty, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) for the upcoming Drawing Blood. This 12-issue comic book maxi-series, originally launched as a successful Kickstarter, will reach a larger audience in April and be published by Image Comics.

“The completely fictional true stories of Shane ‘Books’ Bookman sums it up the best,” said Eastman. “Set squarely in our collective world of Comics, part autobiographical, part tall tails and legends, I wanted a fictional character we could really put through the paces. Drawing Blood is all that and a basket of kittens…”

Avallone added: “When Kevin told me his idea for the project that became Drawing Blood, I immediately understood three things: it was something that hadn’t really been done before in comics, it could be really amazing… and that I wanted to write it with him. He kindly brought me on as co-creator, and we’ve had a blast turning all the crazy stories of a life in comics into this funny, entertaining, and heartbreaking saga of survival and redemption in show business.”

Sloan Foundation & Sundance Institute Announce Feature Film Prize & Grant Recipients

Sloan-Foundation-and-SundanceToday at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, the nonprofit Sundance Institute and Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s joint Science-In-Film Initiative honored Love Me, from filmmaker duo Sam and Andy Zuchero, with this year’s juried Feature Film Prize.

Also announced today were the recipients of three artist grants aimed at supporting projects currently in development: Emily Everhard received the Sloan Episodic Fellowship for Tektite, Sara Crow and Daniel Rafailedes received the Sloan Development Fellowship for Satoshi, and Lizzi Oyebode received the Sloan Commissioning Grant for Inverses.

The filmmakers received a total of $84,000 in cash awards and were celebrated today at a reception hosted by the Foundation in Park City. Prior to the reception, the Feature Film Prize winners participated in a Sloan Foundation–sponsored Beyond Film event, The Big Conversation: Screen of Consciousness, where they discussed cinema’s portrayal of artificial intelligence.

The biographical drama written and directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor premiered today Monday, January 22nd, at Sundance.

The film follows Robert Peace, who grew up in an impoverished section of Newark and later graduated from Yale with degrees in molecular biophysics and biochemistry while on scholarship. Peace led a dual life in academia and research while also earning six figures selling marijuana.

“Rob Peace” is based on Jeff Hobbs biography The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace by Jeff Hobbs.

The film stars Jay Will, Mary J. Blige, Camila Cabello, Michael Kelly and Mare Winningham.

Sundance 2024: “ Hit Man” Premieres At Sundance

Director Richard Linklater and actor Glen Powell were at the Sundance Film Festival today, Monday, for the premiere of their film ‘Hitman,’ an upcoming action comedy which they co-wrote.

Following the success of his recent romantic comedy ‘Anyone but You,’ which grossed over $100 million worldwide, Glen Powell is once again in the spotlight with ‘Hit Man.’

The action comedy has been gaining considerable buzz since its North American premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival last September, where it played to strong reviews.
