James Gandolfini’s Son Cast As Tony Soprano

In a stroke of casting genius, Michael Gandolfini, son of the late James Gandolfini, is set to play the iconic role of Tony Soprano in the upcoming Sopranos prequel movie, Deadline reports.

Michael, 19, is set to play a young Tony Soprano in “The Many Saints of Newark,” a film that tells the background story of the crime drama television series. Most recently, he is on the TV period drama series “The Deuce.”

Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World, Terminator Genisys) is set to direct the movie for New Line. The film is written by The Sopranos creator and writer David Chase as well as show writer Lawrence Konner who collaborated with Chase on the late 80s TV series “Almost Grown”.

Also in the cast are Vera Farmiga, Alessandro Nivola, Jon Bernthal, Billy Magnussen, and Corey Stoll.

Though no official synopsis has been released, the film will be set during the Newark riots in July, 1967, centering on Tony’s uncle Dickie Moltisanti (Nivola). The film’s release date is yet to be announced.

Regarded by many as one of the greatest TV series ever, The Sopranos ran for six seasons from January 10, 1999 to June 10, 2007.

High School Student Cast As Maria In “West Side Story” Remake

Steven Spielberg has found the female lead for his upcoming remake of the classic romantic musical tragedy “West Side Story”. Her name is Rachel Zegler, a 17 year old student from New Jersey.

Rachel was selected for the sought-after role from 30,000 Latino actors who submitted video auditions.

She recently caught the internet’s attention after a video of her went viral which shows her singing Lady Gaga’s recent hit “Shallow’ from another hit musical “A Star Is Born.” She’s also uploaded videos on her YouTube channel which shows her singing original songs and covers of popular hits.

The remake is set to be directed by Steven Spielberg. She will be joining previously announced actor Ansel Elgort who will play the male lead.

The original 1961 “West Side Story” film as inspired by a Romeo and Juliet Broadway musical of the same name from 1957 which tells the story of Maria, a Puerto Rican girl who falls in love with a white New Yorker Tony.

The film was a critical and boxoffice hit, winning 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture. In 1997, the film was chosen for preservation on the National Film Registry.

TNT’s “I Am the Night” Presents My Favorite Murder Live On Jan 15 At El Rey Theater

TNT announced today that its thrilling new true crime series I Am the Night is teaming up with the hit podcast My Favorite Murder to bring an exclusive live episode hosted by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark on January 15th at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles. This unique partnership marks a first for the My Favorite Murder team, as the podcast has never partnered with a television network in support of an upcoming drama series.

On the anniversary of the Black Dahlia’s death, and in the same city where she was killed, Murderinos can join Karen and Georgia to dive deeper into Hollywood’s most notorious murder before an exclusive screening of TNT’s new limited series I Am the Night. Stan Lee Tribute To Be Held January 30

Filmmaker Kevin Smith and many others is set to pay tribute to legendary storyteller, comic book writer and publisher Stan Lee.

Titled “Excelsior! A Celebration of the Amazing, Fantastic, Incredible & Uncanny Life of Stan Lee,” the event is set to take place on January 30 at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre.

The event was announced today by Kevin Smith, Legion M and Agents of Mayhem in partnership with Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment” and will benefit The Hero Initiative which is one of Lee’s favorite charities.

The Museum Of Modern Art Showcases Preserved And Restored Films

The Museum of Modern Art’s “To Save and Project” the 16th edition of it’s annual international film festival with a diverse set of cinematic treasures.

The film festival, which runs from Friday January 4 until the end of the month, “celebrates newly preserved and restored films from archives, studios, distributors, foundations, and independent filmmakers”

Barbet Schroeder is set to kick things off with a retrospective of all his documentary films which he described as the “trilogy of evil”. This includes “General Idi Amin Dada: A Self Portrait” (1974), “Terror’s Advocate” (2007), and the weeklong New York theatrical run of “The Venerable W.”

Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for 1990’s “Reversal of Fortune”, a film which won Jeremy Irons an Oscar Best Actor in a Leading Role, Schroeder is known for directing boxoffice hit thrillers “Single White Female” and the Sandra Bullock starrer “Murder by Numbers.”

There’s plenty of surprise highlights in this year’s lineup, which features 50 features and shorts from around the globe, some receiving their first US screening since their original release. To get a full list of events, go to moma.org.

“Stranger Things” Season 3 New Details

Netflix is starting the year announcing the return everyone’s favorite sci-fi/horror hit “Stranger Things.”

“One Summer Can Change Everything”, says season 3’s one sheet which was also posted by the streaming service on Twitter, announcing the season’s return on July 4th.

There’s also a brief teaser which accompanied the announcement, featuring a throwback footage of Dick Clark’s 1985 New Year’s count down. The video broadcast slowly turns upside down as the fireworks explode and gets interrupted by choppy tv intermissions with creepy computer messages such as “when blue and yellow meet in the west” and “SilverCatFeeds.”

Recently in early December, Netflix release the season’s episode titles, though not a lot about the plot has been revealed so far.

The series is a huge breakout success for the streaming giant. Set in fictitious Hawkins, Indiana, with season 3 set one year after the events of season two and, according to David Harbour, is said to be influenced by the 1985 action-comedy Fletch.

IMAX Earns $1Billion For The First Time

The IMAX movie format has reached a new milestone, surpassing the $1 billion mark at the global boxoffice in a single calendar year.

This is the first time the company has reached that mark in its 50-year history. This number was powered by a combination of Hollywood blockbusters as well as various local language films from China, Japan, Korea, Russia and India.

Leading the charge were Hollywood tentpoles such as Disney’s “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Black Panther” as well as Universal Pictures’ “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.”

Recently, “Aquaman” has led the global boxoffice for the third weekend and a great part of its success was the 1,227 IMAX screens which played the film worldwide, including 406 screens in the US. Both of these contributed to $16.4 million gross with a week more to go before 2018 comes to a close.

There’s a total of 1,443 IMAX systems as of September 30, 2018, 1,346 of which were in commercial multiplexes.

Netflix Keep “Friends” For Another Year With $100M Deal

Keeping Friends can cost you a lot, in fact it cost $100m in the case of Netflix.

Netflix is reportedly keeping the iconic TV show for another year to the tune of “around $100 million”, various sources are reporting including New York Times.

This deal is a huge leap from the $30m annually it cost Netflix to stream the show exclusively which was signed in 2014.

The streaming service made the announcement shortly after fans took to social media after discovering that show might be leaving Netflix in 2019.

“No, it’s not leaving in January,” Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer told NBC News on Monday.

The deal is a somewhat a confirmation that the show is a big draw to Netflix, which reportedly has 57 million subscribers in the US and 130 million around the globe.

Metallica Donate $100K To Aid California Wildfire Relief Efforts

As Metallica urges its fans to donate for the relief efforts, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers are doing their part by donating $100,000, made through their All Within My Hands non-profit foundation.

“Sadly once again communities in California are experiencing historically devastating wild fires in both the Northern and Southern parts of the state,” the iconic band wrote in a statement Friday on allwithinmyhands.org.

“All Within My Hands has made a $50,000 donation each to the North Valley Community Foundation and the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation; both agencies provide service to victims at evacuation centers and other much needed relief. We would like to encourage you to join us in supporting those in need and our first responders in any way you can by donating money, non-perishable food, clothing and other supplies or by giving your time volunteering or providing temporary housing. Every little bit helps.”

The foundation also posted on its Twitter page: “California is experiencing tragic wild fires. AWMH gave $50k to @NVCF & @LAFDFoundation. We encourage you to support those in need & first responders: donate money, non-perishable food, clothing, supplies or volunteer time/housing. https://nvcf.org http://supportlafd.org.”

The wildfires, which began on November 8, have so far reportedly claimed 77 lives with hundreds still unaccounted for, and destroyed structures in LA and Ventura countie, and tens of thousands of acres burned.
