Joel McHale Returns to Host 51st Annual Saturn Awards

saturn-awards 2024The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films has announced that actor, comedian, and host Joel McHale (star of Animal Control and Community), will return as host of the 51st Annual Saturn Awards on Sunday, February 4, 2024 at the L.A. Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel.

The Saturns will once again be live-streamed on Electric Entertainment’s premium OTT app and FAST channel, ElectricNOW, and will include exclusive interviews from the Red Carpet, from the winner’s press walk, and from behind-the-scenes with genre luminaries.

Presented and produced by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films in collaboration with Electric Entertainment’s ElectricNOW, the Saturn Awards are the only awards show that has been honoring the best in genre entertainment since 1972.

Academy President Robert Holguin and Saturn producers Bradley and Kevin Marcus comment, “We are thrilled to have Joel McHale host the Saturn Awards for the second year in a row. With his remarkable talent, dry wit, and acerbic humor, he embodies the spirit of the Saturn Awards tradition as Hollywood’s entertaining and irreverent awards show. The Academy is truly fortunate to have him as the host for this momentous 51st annual celebration.

This year’s show is dedicated to the memory of the Saturn Awards’ dear friends, acclaimed actor and former Saturn Awards host, Lance Reddick, (most well-known for his roles in “Bosch” and the “John Wick” franchise) and legendary filmmaker William Friedkin, (Oscar winning director of “The Exorcist,” and “The French Connection”).

In addition to the annual award categories, the award show will present Special Saturn Awards Honorees from past, present, and future winners. Christopher Nolan will receive The Visionary Award, presented by Emily Blunt at the Awards show. Other special awards will be announced in the coming weeks.

Remastered Space-Mulet Hits Shelves In July 2024

space-mullet comicsSuperstar writer/artist Daniel Warren follows up Breakout success of Transformers, Do A Powerbomb with remastered sci-fi epic Space-Mullet in July 2024

Hot off the 2023 Eisner Award winning Do a Powerbomb and skyrocketing to fame with his fresh spin on the Transformers comic book series, Daniel Warren Johnson has another balls-to-the-wall adventure for fans in a new print collected edition of his long-running webcomic, Space-Mullet. This epic, intergalactic tale will be re-introduced to fans, feature remastered lettering, and include an all-new, never-before-printed chapter. It will hit shelves in July 2024 from Image Comics.

Johnson’s growing oeuvre has positioned him as the “It” writer of the moment in comics. The critically-acclaimed Do a Powerbomb snagged him an Eisner Award in the Best Teen Publication category—edging out the likes of such YA juggernauts as Alice Oseman’s Heartstopper, Vol. 4—and cast him as an industry high-flyer. In the follow-up to bestselling Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo de Felici’s Void Rivals barnburner, Johnson’s Transformers #1 issue premier laid waste to recent DC and Marvel launches with a chart-topping 150K copy instant sell-out that left a bevy of reprints in its wake.

Now Johnson’s Space-Mullet will provide fans with a peek at the comic that allowed him to cut his teeth on sequential storytelling and helped start it all.

“When I started Space-Mullet, I had just quit my steady teaching job, had no money, and DEFINITELY no work in the comics industry,” said Johnson. “This book was me throwing everything I had at trying to prove to the comics world I could make something special. The pages are humble, but are a huge foundation for what made me the artist I am now. See proto-DWJ come to life in these pages!!!”

“The Iron Claw” Director Sean Durkin Talks About The Von Erichs And His Love For Wrestling

the-iron-claw von erichThe recent release of biographical wrestling drama “The Iron Claw” is gaining critical praise and year-end awards attention. It was named recently by the National Board of Review as one of the top 10 films of 2023 earlier this month.

Written and directed by Durkin, “The Iron Claw” is currently playing in cinemas. The film features Zac Efron as Kevin Von Erich, Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich, Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich, Maxwell Jacob Friedman as Lance Von Erich, Holt McCallany as Fritz Von Erich, Maura Tierny as Doris Von Erich, Lily James as Pam Adkisson, Stanley Simons as Mike Von Erich, Aaron Dean Eisenberg as Ric Flair among other.

Recently, the film’s director Sean Durkin shares his emotional personal experiences in making the film, and his passion for the film’s subject about the tragic story of The Von Erich family of wrestlers:

As a kid in the late ’80s and early ’90s, I was obsessed with wrestling. I don’t know what got me into the sport, I just remember being completely consumed by it. I was living in England at the time, and although the popularity of wrestling was growing, it was far from ingrained in the culture. I would watch the weekly shows on TV, the main events that aired a few times a year, and beg my parents to take me to any live matches passing through London.

But it wasn’t enough. I wanted to know everything there was to know about the world of wrestling. I would search for magazines any time my parents stopped at a newsstand. I’d scour book shops for VHS tapes of old NWA matches. And it was in this deep dive that I first saw The Von Erich brothers wrestling together as hometown heroes in the renowned Dallas Sportatorium.

I’ll never forget those first images of that place. You could feel the sweat and the dust, you could smell the cigarette smoke. These guys were fast and exciting and the crowd was wild. Every wrestling show on TV was so polished at that point, verging on cartoonish. But this felt real and raw, this had honesty. I fell in love with Kevin’s bare foot high-flying style; Kerry’s unparalleled power and athleticism; David’s towering stature. A three-headed monster of epic proportions commanding this vibrant stage in my favorite sport. They were rockstars in the ring who revolutionized wrestling. And they just looked like they were having so much fun doing it together. You could feel the love between them.
