Love & War Collide In New Series “Dead Romans” Launching In March 2023

Up-and-coming writer Fred Kennedy and artist Nick Marinkovich team up for an all-new historical fiction adventure in the upcoming Dead Romans. This six issue miniseries is set to launch in March 2023 from Image Comics.

In Dead Romans, lush, beautiful illustrations bring to life a brutal tale of love and war from the birth of the Roman Empire. the Empire that butchers his people. He wants to make a queen of the woman he loves, Honoria, a fellow slave. Now, fifty thousand Romans will die to give her a throne she never asked for…or wanted.

“I was nervous about this book, because at its core it really is a love story. With the wrong artist that aspect could get lost amid the mud and violence,” said Kennedy. “But Nick really understood the tone, and he brought that emotion to life. It’s a brutal story, told with some of the most beautiful panels I’ve ever seen. I am VERY proud (and lucky) to have been part of this team.”

Marinkovich added: “This isn’t a history lesson. It’s therapy—the kind that reminded me why I was a fan before I ever picked up a brush—and Fred’s a time traveler. He’s taking us back to a moment in time, and immersing us in the raw battle scars that went with it. It’s a trip to be on board, and I’m just trying to keep up…”

Hulu Debuts “Dear Santa, The Series” Tonight At Midnight

On the heels of the critically-acclaimed Christmas documentary, Dear Santa about the United States Postal Service’s venerated Operation Santa program, streaming on Hulu and included on the Entertainment Weekly, Town and Country, Women’s Health and Men’s Health magazine lists of must-watch holiday films, Hulu will debut the new documentary series Dear Santa, The Series tonight: Sunday, December 18 at Midnight Eastern.

The six-episode series takes audiences on an inspiring holiday journey as children across America write letters to Santa and kind-hearted “elves” step up in unexpected ways to make their Christmas wishes come true.

Directed by Dana Nachman (Pick of the Litter, Batkid Begins) and produced by her company, Sweet World Films, along with Chelsea Matter, TRAVERSE32’s Brendan Gaul and Brett Henenberg, and Christopher Karpenko, the series was brought to life by the same team behind the acclaimed IFC Films documentary feature.

“Price We Pay” Trailer Released

The upcoming action thriller is directed by Ryuhei Kitamura, who previously directed the 2008 horror film The Midnight Meat Train.

Lionsgate has released an intense new red band trailer for the film which gives us a look at the film. The film is set for release on VOD on January 10 and select theaters on January 13.

“Price We Pay” stars Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) and Stephen Dorff (Blade).

After an intense holdup at a pawnshop, Grace is taken hostage by the thieves. First Trailer for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” Released

The very first Footage Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer movie was shown exclusively in theaters prior to IMAX screenings of the new Avatar.

Just like the director’s previous film, Tenet, the trailer for “Oppenheimer” was shown exclusively in theaters in front of a major film release, in this case, in front of Avatar: The Way of Water’s IMAX screenings. So it is entirely possible as well that the footage will most likely not be released online or elsewhere.

“Oppenheimer” is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The upcoming biographical film is written and directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist who is credited often as the “father of the atomic bomb” for his role in the Manhattan Project, the research and development undertaking during World War II that produced the first nuclear weapons.

During a recent interview with Total Film magazine, the director mentioned that they had recreated the Trinity test, which is the first successful detonation of a nuclear weapon, without the use of CGI.

The film includes a star-studded cast which includes, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Jack Quaid and Matthew Modine among many others.

Oppenheimer is set for release on July 21, 2023, by Universal Pictures.

Sundance to honor Luca Guadagnino with International Icon Award

Today the nonprofit Sundance Institute announced that Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino will receive the International Icon Award at Opening Night: A Taste of Sundance presented by IMDbPro on January 19 in Park City. Guadagnino will join previously announced honorees of the evening, Ryan Coogler, W. Kamau Bell, and Nikyatu Jusu. The 2023 Sundance Film Festival will take place January 19–29, 2023, in person in Park City, Salt Lake City, and the Sundance Resort, along with a selection of films available online across the country January 24–29, 2023.

The Award recognizes an international auteur who creates distinctive cinematic universes and has made a lasting impact on filmmaking, most notably through a commitment to storytelling and an unwavering creative vision. Guadagnino is the writer, director, and producer of several celebrated films who most recently directed Bones and All. He has strong roots in the Sundance community going back over a decade.

He made his Sundance debut at the 2010 Festival with his film I Am Love, which he wrote, directed, and produced. In 2017, Guadagnino made his return to the Festival with the premiere of his Academy Award-winning film, Call Me By Your Name, starring Timothée Chalamet. Guadagnino also produced the documentary The Truffle Hunters, which played at the Festival in 2020. He has won and been nominated for several awards, including Venice Film Festival, Golden Lion BAFTA Award for Best Direction, and Nastro d’Argento for Best Director.

2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards – Television Nominations Announced

Film Independent has announced the list of TV nominees for the 2023 Spirit Awards. Leading the nominations were Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Severance and Station Eleven, all of which received three nominations each.

“As the television landscape continues to evolve, and independent artists expand the idea of how stories can be told, we’re proud to be changing with them,” said Josh Welsh, president of Film Independent. “With our new categories and gender-neutral acting awards, we hope to better reflect the diversity of incredible work being created by these talented artists.”

This year, just like the film nominees, the acting categories will be gender-neutral, with the best actor and actress categories replaced with Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series award having 10 nominees. Additionally, Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series award has been added to honor performances outside of the leading roles.

The 38th annual awards ceremony will be held on the beach in Santa Monica on Sunday, March 4.

Dark Sky’s Sci-Fi Thriller “Landlocked” Sets Release

Directed by Paul Owens, “Landlocked” is set for release in select theaters, VOD and digital platforms on January 6, 2023.

The sci-fi thriller is the directorial debut of Owens, who also served as writer and producer.

The film incorporates actual found footage in the form of childhood home movies, and features a cast of real life family members playing fictionalized versions of themselves.

Zac Brown Band Announces 2023 “From The Fire Tour,” Marking Their 10th North American Tour

Today, multi-platinum, GRAMMY Award-winning Zac Brown Band announced their upcoming 2023 “From the FireTour.”

The new set of dates, produced by Live Nation, arrives on the heels of 2022’s “Out in the Middle Tour” and the release of “The Comeback (Deluxe)” album, which features re-recorded tracks with some of music’s biggest stars, including Blake Shelton, James Taylor, Jimmy Buffett, Cody Johnson, Marcus King, Jamey Johnson, and Ingrid Andress. The “Out in the Middle Tour” saw the band perform at Wrigley Field, Hollywood Bowl, Truist Park, and the famed Fenway Park, where they hold the record for most consecutive sold out shows with 13. Sundance Film Festival Announces 2023 Short Film and Indie Episodic Program

Today the nonprofit Sundance Institute announced the Short Films and Indie Episodic projects selected for the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. For in-person attendees, Indie Episodic works will have individual premieres and Shorts will screen in curated programs. Beginning January 24, all Indie Episodic projects and selected Shorts will also screen online through the end of the Festival. The 2023 Festival will take place January 19–29, 2023, in person in Park City, Salt Lake City, and the Sundance Resort, along with a selection of films available online across the country January 24–29, 2023.

“Short films and episodic projects are an integral aspect of the overall mission of the Sundance Institute — to empower artists who are taking risks, bringing new perspectives to the forefront, and creating work that entertains and provokes conversation,” said Kim Yutani, Sundance Film Festival Director of Programming. “These platforms provide artists with the ability to expand beyond the boundaries of traditional cinema, while also motivating a unique creativity through an ever expanding format.”

The 64 Short Films for the 2023 lineup were selected from 10,981 submissions, the highest number on record. Of these submissions, 4,996 were from the U.S. and 5,985 were international. The four Indie Episodic projects were selected from 519 submissions. This upcoming year’s Short Film program includes work from 23 countries and the Indie Episodic represents works from five countries.
