Historically, the Producer Guild Awards (PGA) is considered a strong indicator of how Oscar best picture will turn out. Consider this metric: over 80% of PGA nominees have become Oscar nominees since 2009.
However, it has been a wide-open awards season so far. Aside from the consensus building around Spotlight, Oscar front-runners this year seems more difficult to determine.
This year, PGA keeps it interesting with the surprise inclusion of a few well-reviewed films — the artificial intelligence thriller “Ex Machina”, and the border drama “Sicario”.
Here is the list of the PGA’s film nominations. The awards will be given out Jan. 23.
“The Big Short”
“Bridge of Spies”
“Brooklyn”
“Ex Machina”
“Mad Max: Fury Road”
“The Martian”
“The Revenant”
“Sicario”
“Spotlight”
“Straight Outta Compton”
Winners will be announced on Jan. 23 during a ceremony in Los Angeles.

Season two of Fox’s “Gotham” will premiere later this month.

Fox has been releasing promo materials the past few weeks as we head into Gotham’s second season premiere later this month. Judging from these promos, it appears that Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock will be busier than ever as Gotham’s villains old and new begin to rise to power.
Star Ben McKenzie recently revealed on EW that the show’s story arcs will be more serialized in it’s treatment of villains, as opposed to season 1 wherein new villains were revealed and disposed of in the same episode.
Here’s the official synopsis that Fox released to go along with the announcement of the premiere date.
“The stakes are higher than ever as Gotham explores the origin stories of some of the most ambitious and depraved Super Villains, including The Riddler, The Joker and Mr. Freeze, and Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) uncovers more secrets from his father’s past.”
A new promo video can be seen below:
“This is not a red herring,” writer/producer Bruno Heller told E! Online in February. “It’s the beginning of the story of how the Joker came to be, how the Joker was created, where he came from, who he is. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Cameron Monaghan is the Joker. He might be.”
And to fans who have been waiting for Gotham’s season 1 Blu-ray, all 22 episodes will be available on Tuesday, September 8th in glorious 1080p. Additionally, it will also be available for streaming on Netflix beginning September 21st, the same day season 2 premieres on Fox. The 4-disc season 1 on blu-ray will include special features that will not be available via streaming services.
“Gotham” Season 2 premieres Monday, Sept. 21, on Fox at 8 p.m. EDT.

The realities of the 21st century television landscape have served a story first set in the late 1930 very very well. A month after its premiere, Fox’s freshman Gotham has hit a total multi-platform audience of 22.2 million, according to the network. Not only is that a pretty impressive number for the WBTV produced world of Batman backstory but it is actually a 168% life over the Live + Same Day audience of 8.3 million that the series got for its 8 PM September 22 debut.
Those Live + SD numbers were Fox’s best fall drama debut in since 2000 and Gotham hit an 18-49 record for Live + 7 lift when those results came in. However, perhaps more telling of how audiences are really watching content nowadays is the fact that 5 million of that 22.2 million audience came from non-linear viewing.
About midway through CBS’s live telecast of the 68th Tony Awards on Sunday night, host Hugh Jackman told the audience at Radio City Music Hall that the first show he’d ever been cast in was Meredith Willson’s The Music Man. To prepare, in fact, he’d learned all eight parts to Rock Island,’ the opening number of that signature piece of syncopated Americana, and to prove it, he performed a minute or so, sprecht-singing all eight parts.
The first words are: Cash for the merchandise/Cash for the buttonhooks, which sounds like the beginning of an ode to Broadway, 2014. Then he ushered out LL Cool J and TI, and all three of them rapped “Rock Island,” which sounded a lot like Sesame Street, 1995. It was funny and toothless. Much the same can be said for the most breathlessly upbeat Tony broadcast in memory. Almost nothing memorable happened over the course of just over three hours of good cheer.
Jackman looked somewhat raffish and ragged of beard, as though he was coming from an audition for a revival of Sunday In The Park With George.

Fox has released the first trailer for the upcoming Batman prequel tv series “Gotham.” The original trailer just aired tonight during 24: Live Another Day, and this extended version released online.
The trailer shows us a glimpse of McKenzie as Gordon, as well David Mazouz as a young Bruce Wayne. “I promise you, I will find the man who did this,” says McKenzie’s Gordon as he consoles Bruce amid what seem to be an aftermath of the death of Wayne’s parents.
Although the show takes place before Wayne becomes The Dark Knight, the trailer shows a collage of younger versions of iconic Batman villains such as Penguin, Catwoman, Riddler, and Poison Ivy early in their escapades.
Gotham stars Ben McKenzie in the lead role as Detective James Gordon, with Jada Pinkett Smith playing a gangster named Fish Mooney.
Gotham is scheduled to debut on Fox later this year.

It seems Batman origin stories are all the rage.
The population of Gotham, Fox’s upcoming Batman origin drama, is rising fast after the weekend announcement of Ben McKenzie being cast as the lead role, James Gordon .
THR reports that four more actors have joined the cast, including a police captain, a love interest, a butler, and a villain. Robin Lord Taylor, Zabryna Guevara, Sean Pertwee, and Erin Richards come into Gotham with three out of the four characters being very recognizable names to comic book fans.
Pertwee is the newest person to play Alfred Pennyworth, the butler who also takes care of Bruce Wayne after his parents are killed. Jeremy Irons was also recently cast as Alfred, but for the film version in Man of Steel 2.

Netflix may have just lost kid-friendly Nickelodeon content to Amazon Prime Instant Video, but now it’s got a new partnership with DreamWorks to fill that void. The result, apparently, will be more than 300 hours of brand-new programming inspired by characters from DreamWorks franchises including Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon.
Video streaming service Netflix on Monday announced a new, multiyear partnership with DreamWorks Animation whereby it will bring many of the studio’s beloved characters to the TV market via a branded collection of shows.
Marking the largest deal for original first-run content in Netflix’s history, the partnership will include more than 300 hours of new programming and give DreamWorks Animation a way to greatly expand its TV production and distribution. In fact, this will be the first time DreamWorks Animation’s characters will be introduced into the television market in this way.
The new shows will be inspired by characters from DreamWorks Animation’s hit franchises — including Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon — as well upcoming feature films. It will also incorporate the vast Classic Media library that DreamWorks acquired in 2012.
