Today HA/HA and 2R Productions announced the video-on-demand (VOD) launch date for their New York Times Critics Pick documentary SAM NOW – directed by Reed Harkness – as June 6 on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play and VUDU.
What do two film-obsessed brothers do to solve a family mystery? Using every video format imaginable, they make a movie as they travel thousands of miles looking for their missing mom. Stitching together 25 years of home videos and filling the gaps in the archive with play, SAM NOW is a mosaic of love, longing, and loss, as well as an attempt to overcome intergenerational trauma.
“I am excited that SAM NOW will be available on VOD,” states the film’s director Reed Harkness. “As a teen, I watched every independent film I could get my hands on from the local video store. I loved coming-of-age movies. I loved Truffaut and Apted. But nothing existed quite like what I really wanted to see, so over the next 25 years, I made this movie. It’s totally, exactly the film I’ve wanted to see. I hope that anyone who watches SAM NOW can find a piece of themselves within it.”

Today, award-winning athlete, entrepreneur and philanthropist Siya Kolisi announced that his documentary “RISE – The Siya Kolisi Story,” which chronicles his journey as the first black, South African rugby captain who overcame the odds to lead his national team to win the 2019 World Cup, is set to world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 12.
The documentary is more than a sports story and pulls back the curtain on Kolisi’s tumultuous upbringing in South Africa, where he navigated through poverty, systemic racism from apartheid, neighbourhood violence and a complex relationship with his father.
Rugby became Kolisi’s refuge as he honed his craft, becoming the first-ever, Black captain of South Africa’s national team in its 126-year history as well as one of the greatest superstars of his generation. In the process, Kolisi’s leadership on and off the pitch inspired a country that had been plagued by decades of segregation and injustice.
“I’m truly honored to be sharing my story with millions around the world,” said Siya Kolisi. “I hope my journey inspires people to chase their dreams and reminds others to never allow adverse circumstances to define our lives. We are more than products of our environments and we have the potential to change our respective narratives.”
MOTHER, MAY I?, a psychological thriller from writer-director Laurence Vannicelli and featuring stars Kyle Gallner (Smile, Dinner In America) and Holland Roden (Teen Wolf) is set to arrive in theaters and on VOD on July 21st.
The spine-chilling film is the debut feature from writer-director Laurence Vannicelli, and it marks a breakthrough in mind-bending horror. Emmett (Kyle Gallner) and Anya (Holland Roden) unexpectedly inherit his estranged mother’s house after her passing. As they sift through her estate, Anya begins acting more and more like Emmett’s mother – forcing him to question if she’s pushing him to confront his traumatic past or if she’s actually been possessed by his mother’s spirit. The cast also includes Chris Mulkey (Twin Peaks).
Kyle Gallner currently stars opposite Sosie Bacon in the surprise hit Smile, which spent two weeks atop the box office and is nearing a global tally of $150 million. His recent film credits also include Dinner in America, produced by Ben Stiller, Amy Redford’s Roost, which premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, and Scream 5. For television, Gallner starred in the Paramount+ limited series “Interrogation” and the WGN series “Outsiders,” opposite David Morse.
Holland Roden also made her mark in series television, appearing in such hits as Cold Case, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Lost, Weeds, Mayans M.C. and Teen Wolf. She has the top-billed role in the upcoming Teen Wolf: The Movie. Laurence Vannicelli developed MOTHER, MAY I? with his partner, Daisy Long, a former ballerina, who choreographed the dancing seen in the film’s supernatural sequences.
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
Emmett wants to clean and flip his recently deceased mother’s house: get in, get out, and avoid any trauma still lingering from when she abandoned him as a young child. Anya, his fiancé, see’s this as an opportunity to finally force Emmett to deal with his trauma because she believes it is preventing him from being the partner she needs. So she convinces him to take mushrooms to get him to let go. But something strange happens while they’re tripping: she starts behaving like his mother. The next morning he wakes up sober, but she still won’t drop the act… Anya loves playing games – is this her taking it too far? Or did his mother’s spirit somehow possess her?

Bestselling artist/writer Ryan Stegman (Vanish, Venom) and Superboy writer Kenny Porter team up with Beef Bros artist Tyrell Cannon, colorist Mike Spicer and letterer/designer John J. Hill for an action/comedy in the upcoming The Schlub. This all new ongoing series is set to launch in August from Image Comics.
The Schlub follows failing dentist Roger Dalton who blames the world for his problems… up until he is body-swapped with the world’s greatest superhero. Can Roger save Earth and finally prove to his family he’s not a loser? Or are we all doomed?
“A few years back I pitched Image a comic that I would write and draw about a Michael Scott/Kenny Powers type character if they became a superhero that the entire world relied on. It was approved and I had started work on it when Marvel came along and asked me to do a little book called Venom,” said Stegman. “I couldn’t say no, but I couldn’t shake this idea of the superhero that just can’t do the right thing. So I asked my buddies Kenny, Tyrell and John to help me make this book a reality and here we are! The greatest superhero comic book on the planet.” Continue reading →
The American indie debut drama is a fictionalized account of the filmmaker’s coming of age, as he struggles to get out from under the yoke of a prescription-drug-addicted mother in small-town Virginia.
Jamie Sisley’s coming of age film stars Wyatt Oleff (“It”, “City On Fire”), Fin Argus (“Queer As Folk”, “Clouds”), and Chrissy Metz (“This Is Us”).
The film opens on Friday May 19 at Film Forum in NYC and May 25 at Laemmle Royal in LA.
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
Life in the last, lame-duck months of high school, with a job at the Jolly Cow ice cream drive-in, would be cringe-inducing enough without a deeply depressed, self-destructive mother (Chrissy Metz, star of “This is Us”). Wyatt Oleff (“City on fire”) and Fin Argus (“Queer As Folks”) play teenage brothers stuck in a cycle of discovering their mom passed out, dragging her to the hospital, and encouraging rehab.
Despair quickly turns to hope and then boomerangs back again. Featuring three superb performances that find surprising humor and humanity amid the tragedy of parental addiction. A MarVista Entertainment release.
