13th Annual Key West Film Festival Announces Official Lineup

annual-key-west-film-festivalThe 13th Annual Key West Film Festival announces its official 2024 lineup including major fall films from Pedro Almodovar, Barry Jenkins, Billy Corben, Michael Gracey, Gia Coppola and others. More than 75 films will be shown during the 5-day festival, which runs November 13-17.

As is tradition for the festival, the Opening and Closing Night films are curated by two of the top film critics in the country. Lovia Gyarkye of The Hollywood Reporter will host a discussion with Stepanie Zacharek of Timeprior to the Opening Night screening of THE FIRE INSIDE, the inspiring story of two time Olympic women’s boxing gold medalist Claressa “T-Rex” Shields and her fight for all women athletes across the world. The film is written by local hero Barry Jenkins, Miami-bred Academy Award winning writer and director of Moonlight.

On Saturday night, Zacharek will lead a pre-show conversation with Gyarkye prior to the screening of THE ROOM NEXT DOOR, which stars Academy Award winner Julianne Moore and Academy Award nominee Tilda Swinton in Pedro Almodovar’s first English language film about a best-selling writer who rekindles her relationship with her friend, a war journalist, with whom she has lost touch for a number of years.

Other spotlight films include Gia Coppola’s THE LAST SHOWGIRL, featuring a career defining performance by Pamela Anderson as a seasoned Las Vegas showgirl who must plan for her future when her show abruptly closes after a 30-year run; the inspirational true story UNSTOPPABLE, featuring Jennifer Lopez and Bobby Cannavale alongside Jharrel James (also in Moonlight), who stars as Anthony Robles, an athlete born with one leg who defies expectations to become a champion wrestler in college; and BETTER MAN,
from director Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman), based on the true story of the meteoric rise, dramatic fall, and remarkable resurgence of British pop superstar Robbie Williams, one of the greatest entertainers of all time.

NYCC 2024: Vita Ayala Joins Forces with Skylar Patridge for Action Adventure Comic The Horizon Experiement: Finders/Keepers

finders-keepersPowerhouse comic book writer Vita Ayala (New Mutants, Static: Season One) is partnering up with on-the-verge star artist Skylar Patridge (Absolute Power: Ground Zero, Supergirl) for The Horizon Experiment: Finders//Keepers, a brand-new action-adventure comic that twists the genre in a way that’s never been done before. Fans of Indiana Jones, The Mummy, and Tomb Raider will enjoy this thrilling, fresh take that re-envisions this style of storytelling with new energy and perspective. Hitting shelves in January 2025, this marks the final installment in The Horizon Experiment series of one-shots.

The Horizon Experiment centers on original protagonists from marginalized backgrounds set in a popular genre or inspired by a famous pop culture character, with each unique comic putting a diverse spin on a fan-favorite story. The initiative is led by Eisner and Harvey Award-winning creator Pornsak Pichetshote (The Good Asian, Infidel) and award-winning editor Will Dennis (SOMNA: A Bedtime Story, Gideon Falls).

The Horizon Experiment: Finders//Keepers is a reverse Indiana Jones story that follows Puerto Rican archeology grad student Ines Guarua, who plans to steal an important cultural artifact from a famous museum in order to bring it back home to where it belongs, in the heart of the rainforest. If she fails, then a curse may bring about the destruction of Puerto Rico. This leads Guarua on a quest to smuggle other artifacts from museums and institutions to return them to their native cultures. Finders//Keepers flips the script on traditional action-adventure tales in a fun and exciting way, opening up a new path for protagonist Guarua for potential future stories.

Film Feature: Watch Trailer for “Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin”

bonhoefferDirected by Todd Komarnicki, the upcoming historical drama, BONHOEFFER: Pastor, Spy, Assassin is set to be released on November 22.

As the world teeters on the brink of annihilation, Dietrich Bonhoeffer is swept into the epicenter of a deadly plot to assassinate Hitler. With his faith and fate at stake, Bonhoeffer must choose between upholding his moral convictions or risking it all to save millions of Jews from genocide.

Will his shift from preaching peace to plotting murder alter the course of history or cost him everything?

The film stars Jonas Dassler (“The Golden Glove,” “Never Look Away”) portrays the conflicted Bonhoeffer. August Diehl (“Inglourious Basterds,” “The King’s Man”), Moritz Bleibtreu (“Run Lola Run,” “The Experiment”), and Clarke Peters (“The Wire,” “3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) also play key roles. Rounding out the cast are David Jonsson (“Rye Lane”, “Industry”), Nadine Heidenreich (“Die Flaschenpost-Insel”), and Flula Borg (“Suicide Squad,” “Pitch Perfect 2”).

Official Trailer #2 for ANORA Released

anoraIn the film Anora is a young sex worker from Brooklyn, gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. Once the news reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as the parents set out for New York to get the marriage annulled.

Anora is the latest feature from writer-director Sean Baker (The Florida Project, Red Rocket).

It stars Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Karren Karagulian, Yuriy Borisov, Vache Tovmasyan, Ivy Wolk, Luna Sofía Miranda, Ross Brodar, Lindsey Normington, Darya Ekamasova

The Palme d’Or-winning film is set for release in theaters on Oct. 18. After premiering at Cannes, the critically acclaimed movie now hold a Certified Fresh 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Official Trailer for Animated Comedy “Hitpig!” Released

hitpigJason Sudeikis, Lilly Singh, Rainn Wilson, RuPaul, Hannah Gadsby, Anitta, Charlie Adler, Flavor Flav, Lorraine Ashbourne and Andy Serkis.

It is based on Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times bestseller children’s book “Pete & Pickles” by author Berkeley Breathed.

Set in a futuristic world, the film follows a grizzled porcine bounty hunter who accepts his next hit: Pickles, a naive, ebullient elephant who has escaped the clutches of an evil trillionaire. Though Hitpig initially sets out to capture the perky pachyderm, the unlikely pair find themselves on an unexpected adventure crisscrossing the globe that brings out the best in both of them. Based on an original idea by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Berkeley Breathed, inspired by his 2008 children’s book Pete & Pickles, comes an adventure about learning that sometimes what we want isn’t what we need.

The film is set for release on November 1, 2024.

Official Trailer for “A Complete Unknown”

a-complete-unknownTimothée Chalamet stars as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, set for release in cinemas on January 17th.

Directed by James Mangold ((Walk the Line, Ford v Ferrari), the film is set in the influential New York music scene of the early 60s. It follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician BOB DYLAN’s (Timothée Chalamet) meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts – his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation – culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.

Also in the film are Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, Boyd Holbrook, Norbert Leo Butz, Dan Fogler, and Scoot McNairy.

“A Complete Unknown” is set for release releases Christmas day, December 25, 2024.

Festival Favorite “Drive Back” Sets Release

Facing violent visions, lost memories, and a troubled hitchhiker, they discover a terrifying killer is hunting them and that the shortcut is darker and more personal than they realized.

Directed by Cody Ashford, and written by Jon Sarro, the horror thriller stars Zack Gold, Whit Kunschik, Tammy Kaitz, Robert Stephenson, Madonna Young Magee, Jim Tuck and Crystal Foster.

Michel Fiffe Kicks Off Highly Anticipated Finale Story Arc Death Of Copra Miniseries

Michel-Fiffe-Death-Of-CopraMichel Fiffe’s critically-acclaimed superhero revenge epic will begin a high octane, action-packed finale story arc with the upcoming Death of COPRA. This four issue miniseries will launch in January 2025 from Image Comics.

“The whole thing is bittersweet, which is perfect in a way,” said Fiffe. “The story of COPRA is one of duality: brutal but tender, bombast as defined by human nuance, crafted with a love of comics history while guided by an eye towards the future.”

This new chapter will kick off with 32 story pages written, drawn, colored, and lettered by Fiffe, who added: “These characters have been through the wringer for a long time. Some have their retribution and others get their comeuppance; all of these moments have been speeding towards this crucial home stretch. Although COPRA has traditionally been a single ongoing narrative, this final arc deserved its own space to unfold.”

2024 Sundance Institute Latine Fellowship & Collab Scholarship Artists Selected

sundance-latine-fellowshipThe nonprofit Sundance Institute announced today the storytellers selected for the 2024 Latine Fellowship and Collab Scholarship. Now in its third year, the program aims to expand Latine representation in independent media meaningfully by providing artist development through fellowships and mentorships to10 early career Latine artists. This year’s cohort will receive an intentional immersion in a community of like-minded creatives where both professional and creative growth is nurtured through professional and creative development support, networking opportunities, access to Sundance Collab and ELEVATE.

“This year’s Latine Fellowship and Scholarship recipients come from diverse disciplines, all united by their shared goals of growth and increasing representation for a wide range of Latine voices,” said Hajnal Molnar-Szakacs, Director of Sundance Institute’s Artist Accelerator and Women at Sundance. “We are thrilled to welcome them into this Program and look forward to seeing how creative and financial support will help them advance these goals.”

The Sundance Institute Latine Fellowship will uplift five early career Latine artists working in film or television with a yearlong fellowship experience. Each fellow will receive a $10,000 unrestricted grant, bespoke artist development support, creative and tactical support on their projects, and regular opportunities for community engagement and networking. The fellows were chosen from Sundance Institute artist support programs across fiction and nonfiction.

Lumen Prize Announces Winners of 13th Annual Competition

The Lumen Prize—the world’s preeminent award for art created with technology—has announced the winners of its 13th annual competition at a ceremony held at Kachette, London. Since 2012, The Lumen Prize has awarded over 140 artists leading the way in technology-based arts, including Refik Anadol, Sougwen Chung, Mario Klingemann, Malitzin Cortés (CNDSD), Iván Abreu, Operator, and Casey Reas. This year’s winners represent the pinnacle of technology-driven creativity, selected from a pool of 65 finalists and nearly 2,000 entries from 62 countries.

“The 2024 Lumen Prize winners exemplify the innovative spirit and technical mastery that define the intersection of art and technology,” said Gillian Varney, Director of The Lumen Prize. “Their work pushes the boundaries of what’s possible, offering new perspectives on our rapidly evolving digital world.”

The largest International Selectors Committee (ISC) in Lumen Prize history—featuring over 65 members from world-renowned institutions, including Sotheby’s, Royal College of Art, Google, Tezos, and Gucci—selected this year’s finalists. The winners were then chosen by a distinguished Jury Panel, a body of 5 individuals from prestigious institutions, including the Whitney Museum, V&A Museum, M+ Hong Kong, and HeK.
