“Cosplay Universe,” a documentary that explores the evolution and rise of the global phenomenon known as Cosplay, the art of dressing up as a character you love, premiered this past weekend on July 3rd at Anime Expo, and will be followed by a global theatrical release this summer via distributor Abramorama. Featuring the international stories of Yaya Han, Kamui Cosplay, Shema and Juan of Mexican Cosplay Team TWIIN Cosplay, World Cosplay Summit Organizer and academic Ed Hoff, Lauren of Castle Corsetry, Cynthia Tyler, Thomas De Petrillo and Qi Ma. The film is also highlighted by one of the last interviews with legendary comic book figure Stan Lee. Cosplay Universe is the most comprehensive exploration of the cosplay world to date.

Cosplay Universe celebrates the rise of the popular costuming sub-culture and explores the origin and evolution of cosplay as an art form and global community. Directed by Jonathan McHugh and Jordan Rennert, the film was shot over six years – pre-pandemic – at conventions around the U.S. including Anime Expo, San Diego’s Comic-Con International, Atlanta’s Dragon Con, Stan Lee’s last L.A. Comic Con and the World Cosplay Summit in Nagoya, Japan.

‘The Woman King’ Trailer Released

The film boasts an all-star cast led by Viola Davis and John Boyega and is based on an incredible true story.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the historical epic is inspired by the true events that happened in The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries.

“The Woman King” is the remarkable story of the all-female unit of warriors, Agojie, who protected the ancient African Kingdom of Dahomey (presnt-day Benin) for centuries in the 1800s.

Gina Prince-Bythewood also wrote the script, along with Dana Stevens. The film also stars Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim and Hero Fiennes Tiffin.

“The Woman King” is set for theatrical release on September 16, 2022 bypass Sony Pictures Releasing.

Amazon Studios Acquires Rights To Charles Soule & Ryan Brown’s Comic Book Series “Eight Billion Genies” After A Heated Auction

Last week, Hollywood Reporter announced that Amazon Studios has acquired the development rights to Charles Soule and Ryan Browne’s bestselling comic book series, Eight Billion Genies, after a heated auction.

The first project coming out of the deal is a feature film, which will be executive produced by Soule and Browne and serve as the cornerstone in a cross-media Universe of storytelling.

Charles Soule and Ryan Browne are represented by Angela Cheng Caplan of Cheng Caplan Company and Eric Feig of Feig Law.

‘POV’ Delves Into Abundant Yet Painful History of Payahuunadü In Manzanar, Diverted: When Water Becomes Dust

POV, America’s longest running documentary series, now celebrating its 35th anniversary season, exposes the legacy of colonization, racism, and environmental injustice in the Payahuunadü region (California’s Owens Valley).

The national broadcast premiere of Emmy Award-winning director Ann Kaneko’s (Against the Grain: An Artist’s Survival Guide to Perú) and producer Jin Yoo-Kim’s (A Woman’s Work: The NFL Cheerleader Problem) Manzanar, Diverted: When Water Becomes Dust premieres Monday, July 18, 2022.

The documentary is available to stream free until August 18, 2022 at pbs.org , and the PBS Video app. In addition to standard closed captioning, POV, in partnership with audio description service DiCapta, provides real time audio interpretations for audiences with sensory disabilities.

At the foot of the majestic snow-capped Sierras sits Manzanar, the site of the World War II concentration camp where 11,070 Japanese Americans were incarcerated from March 1942 to November 1945. This place is the confluence for memories of Payahuunadü, the now-parched “land of flowing water.”

Lady Gaga In Talks To Join Todd Phillips’ Joker Sequel

The sequel to 2019’s Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux will reportedly be a musical which will likely star the original film’s lead Joaquin Phoenix, and Lady Gaga is set to join him, according to THR.

Per story, Gaga would play DC’s Harley Quinn but a different incarnation than that played by Margot Robbie’s version from current DC Universe. And it will also be a musical.

Phillips and Gaga have worked together before in 2018’s A Star is Born, which starred Gaga along with Bradley Cooper, and which Philips served as a producer.

The original 2019 blockbuster was a huge hit for Phillips. That film grossed $1 billion at the boxoffice worldwide, received 12 nominations at the Oscars, one of which won by Phoenix for playing the iconic lead anti-hero.

More recently, Harley Quinn has been played by Margot Robbie three times, in 2016’s “Suicide Squad,” 2020’s “Birds of Prey” and 2021’s “The Suicide Squad.

There’s something in the air as stars and fans turn out at the crowded premiere of B.J. Novak’s feature directorial debut “Vengeance”. “The Office” alum also wrote the darkly comedic thriller.

In attendance were cast Issa Rae, Ashton Kutcher, Boyd Holbrook, J. Smith-Cameron, Dove Cameron and mega-producer Jason Blum.

The film follows a journalist and podcaster who travels from New York City to Texas to investigate the death of a woman whom he hooked up with.

The 2022 Tribeca Festival continues through Sunday, June 19, 2022.

Knotfest Roadshow Reveals Fall 2022 Tour

Hot on the heels of the massive second leg of Knotfest Roadshow 2022 tour, Slipknot have announced today that they will be hitting the road for their fall tour, this time with horror-themed metal maestros Ice Nine Kills and metalcore titans, Crown The Empire. Produced by Live Nation, the run will kick off on September 20th in Nashville, TN and hit an additional eight cities before culminating in Irvine, CA on October 7th.

Knotfest Presale begins on Tuesday, June 14th for Premium Members and people can sign up to gain access through Thursday, June 16th. General on sale starts at 10am local on Friday, June 17th from Knotfest.com/Roadshow.

2021 marked a banner year for Slipknot. Dreamhack 2022 Brings All The Gaming Fun Into Dallas

The immersive, three-day gaming lifestyle festival, Dreamhack returns this weekend after two and a half years, and its all set to take place in Dallas.

Oceans Calling Festival Unveils Inaugural Lineup

The inaugural Oceans Calling Festival has unveiled the 2022 lineup, which bring powerhouse headliners Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds (Friday), The Lumineers (Saturday), and Alanis Morissette (Sunday) to the southern end of the iconic Ocean City, Maryland Boardwalk at Ocean City Inlet Beach on September 30-October 2. The festival will be featuring three stages and performances from over 30 bands, including Cage The Elephant, Cyndi Lauper, and multiple sets from co-founders and local heroes O.A.R in a historic setting.
