Is Apple About to Copy Microsoft for Once?

By Evan Niu, CFA

Over the decades, there has been a long history of Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT ) copying Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) . This trend most notably started with the graphical user interface, or GUI, that the Mac first brought to consumer PCs and was subsequently followed by Windows.

Another prominent example would be the Zune, which had hoped to muscle in on the iPod’s success, but largely failed. Most recently, Microsoft’s entire business strategy may be transitioning toward Apple’s ways, as Steve Ballmer has made it abundantly clear that Microsoft’s future lies in becoming a “devices-and-services” company, a departure from its predominantly software approach.

Well, Apple may be about to copy its rival from Redmond for once.

Flatland
Apple is just weeks away from kicking off its Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC. The headliner at the event will be iOS 7, which is expected to see its first aesthetic overhaul in years. Numerous rumors over the past couple months have pointed to design chief Jony Ive pursuing a more “flat design.”

The Shirt You Don’t Have to Wash—and Other Clothes that Rarely Get Too Dirty

By Beth Greenfield

Laundry: like it or loathe it, it’s got to get done. Or does it? Maybe not, if the creator of a new no-wash shirt has his way.

More on Shine: How Often do You Really Need to Wash Your Jeans?

Clothing company Wool & Prince, founded in New York City by entrepreneur Mac Bishop, has developed the “better button-down,” a tailored men’s shirt that can be worn for 100 days straight with “No washing. No dry cleaning. No wrinkles. No odor.” Funding has come from a Kickstarter campaign, which had already pulled in more than $167,000 on Tuesday—putting it $135,000 past its goal way before its May 22 deadline. While the retail price has yet to be announced, shirts are available to Kickstarter investors for $98 each.

New ‘iPad 5′ rear shell photo points to upcoming redesign yet again

By Zach Epstein

Apple’s fifth-generation iPad hasn’t yet been unveiled, but at this point we likely have a fairly good idea of what to expect. The new “iPad 5″ will be thinner and lighter than Apple’s current model — which seems like an obvious assumption unless you consider the fact that the third-generation iPad was both thicker and heavier than its predecessor — and it will seemingly have a smaller overall footprint as well. In line with a series of earlier leaks, a newly published photo from case maker Tactus allegedly shows the next-generation iPad’s rear shell. It also reinforces numerous earlier reports suggesting the iPad 5 will feature a big redesign that adopts the iPad mini’s design aesthetic. According to a recent report from KGI Securities, which has a solid track record when it comes to information about unannounced Apple devices, the next-generation iPad will launch this coming August or September.

Daft Punk Sets Spotify Streaming Record

Daft Punk’s new song set a Spotify record on Friday.

The streaming music service said the electronic duo’s latest tune “Get Lucky” had the most streams of any track on currently available to users in the United States and the United Kingdom.

However, Spotify hasn’t released the number of streams as of this writing. In other words, you’ll just have to take their word for it.

The single, which features rapper and producer Pharrell Williams, is the first single off Daft Punk’s upcoming album Random Access Memories. The collection of tunes is the duo’s first effort since scoring director Joseph Kosinski’s underrated sci-fi flick TRON: Legacy.

The electronic group’s last album Human After All was released in 2005.

Daft Punk’s Spotify streaming record essentially takes the crown away from the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis track “Thrift Shop.” In the UK, the title previously belonged to British band Bastille and their song “Pompeii.”

Fans aren’t the only ones who have an appreciation for “Get Lucky.” Williams performed the song no less than three times at the HTC One launch party in New York.

In addition to taking Spotify by storm, Daft Punk’s new tune has also made a considerable dent on iTunes since its release early Friday morning. The track quickly rose to the top of the Top 10 Songs list. In other words, it would appear the duo has a new hit on their hands.

Earlier this week, fans were tricked into checking out a leaked version of the new single. Unfortunately for those who were anxious to check out the duo’s latest offering, the single was nothing more than a looped version of the previously-released teaser.

Random Access Memories will be available for purchase on May 21.

Sony Launches World’s Fastest Personal Internet in Japan

Steven Bogos

So-net Entertainment’s ‘Nuro’ fiber service for home use will support a whopping 2gbps downstream.

We all knew Japan has some pretty awesome internet speeds, but this is just getting ridiculous. So-net Entertainment, an ISP backed by Sony, announced its ‘Nuro’ fiber service for home use, which supports download speeds of up to 2gbps. As in two gigabits. To put that into perspective, the average internet speed in the US is around 3mbps, with the fastest available internet capping out at around 150mbps. This means that So-net’s Nuro service is up to 13 times faster than the fastest internet in the US.

The service also boasts 1gbps uploads and will be available to homes, apartments, and small businesses in Tokyo and six surrounding prefectures. What should you expect to pay for this monster connection? $200 a month? More? Hardly. The service will be available for just 4,980 yen a month (around $51 USD). I used to pay that for my crappy, less-than-1mbps ADSL back when I lived in Australia…

Hammond On Roger Ebert – An Appreciation

By PETE HAMMOND

Certainly Roger Ebert will be remembered for many things. Winning an unprecedented Pulitzer Prize in 1975 for film criticism is just one of them. For me, though, beyond that distinction Roger was far more unique in the pantheon of the truly great critics of our time, and all time. Along with Gene Siskel he figured out a way to take film criticism to the masses in a way it never really had been, at least on a national basis. With their patented ’2 Thumbs Up’ and ’2 Thumbs Down’ reviews on their pioneering PBS and later syndicated weekly TV show, this pair not only brought the job of a film critic into the national consciousness, they also made it fun. And accessible. The ‘thumbs’ signature was really the forerunner of a site like Rotten Tomatoes, an instantly recognizable label that moviegoers could use like a Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval when it appeared in an ad as it did hundreds of times.
