Marvel’s ‘Shang-Chi’ Finds Its Director

By Creative Media Times

Marvel Comics

Destin Daniel Cretton has been tapped by Disney to direct Shang-Chi, Marvel‘s first film with an Asian protagonist.

The talented writer/director is best known for the critically acclaimed 2013 independent drama about a group home for teenagers “Short Term 12,” which earned multiple accolades including three Independent Spirit Award nominations.

Coincidentally, that film was the first lead feature film of actress Brie Larson, who herself is flying high this week as the titular superhero in another Marvel Cinematic Universe film Captain Marvel.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Dave Callaham is writing the script for “Shang-Chi”. Callaham recently wrote the screenplay for “Wonder Woman” sequel “Wonder Woman 1984”, set for release summer of next year.

Created by writer Steve Englehart and artist Jim Starlin, “Shang-Chi” was first published by Marvel Comics in 1973 in Special Marvel Edition #15 and is often called the “Master of Kung Fu.”

In the comics, the character is raised by his father, genius supervillain Fu Manchu. Shang-Chi is trained in martial arts and developed super-human skills. He later found out about his father’s true evil nature and the two became enemies. Decades later during the Marvel NOW! relaunch, he was recruited by Captain America and Iron Man to join Avengers.

Cretton recently directed the upcoming biographical drama “Just Mercy,” which stars Michael B. Jordan and reunites the director with Larson.

After a successful awards run last year, Ethan Hawk returns in a film based on 1973 bank heist and hostage crisis that occurred at the Norrmalmstorg square in Stockholm, Sweden.

The film is from Canadian writer/director Robert Budreau, who collaborated with Hawke in the highly underrated 2015 musical drama “Born to Be Blue,” where the actor played the role of jazz musician Chet Baker.

Hawk recently appeared in the critically acclaimed Paul Schraeder directed drama “First Reformed,” which gave the actor multiple best actor recognition last year and some of the best acclaim in his career.

“Stockholm” premiered last year at the Tribeca Film Festival and co-stars Noomi Rapace and Mark Strong. The film is set for release on April 12, 2019.

“He was surrounded by his children Jack and Sophie, fiancé Wendy Madison Bauer, ex-wife Minnie Sharp, mother Ann Bennett, step-father Steve Bennett, brother Tom Perry, sister Amy Coder, and other close family and friends,” a statement from Robinson read. “The family appreciates the outpouring of support and prayers that have been extended to Luke from around the world, and respectfully request privacy in this time of great mourning. Last week, Perry was rushed to hospital after suffering a massive stroke. This happened on the the same day that a reboot of Beverly Hills, 90210 was announced.

Born Coy Luther Perry III, Perry shot to stardom after being cast as bad boy Dylan McKay on hit 90s TV series Beverly Hills, 90210. Though he initially audition a role that eventually went to co-star Ian Ziering, Perry and Dylan was a good fit, becoming one of the show’s most popular characters.

Perry also appeared on films such as “Good Intentions,” “8 Seconds,” “Red Wing” and the comedy horror “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” which writer Joss Whedon turned into a hit TV series.

He recently returned to TV with “Riverdale,” an ensemble cast based on the characters of Archie Comics where Perry plays Archie’s father Fred Andrews.

He is also set to appear in this summer’s hotly anticipated Quentin Tarantino ensemble “Upon A Time In Hollywood” where he plays late real-life actor Wayne Maunder.

“Aquaman” Sequel Release Date Confirmed

By Creative Media Times

Warner Bros. Pictures
DC Entertainment

A couple of months after The King of Atlantis smashed the boxoffice, it was only a matter of time for the studio to announce a sequel.

And on Wednesday, Warner Bros. confirmed the release date for the sequel Aquaman is set to Dec. 16, 2022, Hollywood Reporter announced.

Though no director is currently attached to helm the sequel, the report mentions that the original film’s director James Wan (The Conjuring, Furious 7) is “making a deal to return as producer.”

The Jason Momoa-starrer had a surprising run at the boxoffice the past few months, eventually becoming the highest grossing DC film at the global boxoffice, grossing nearly $1.140 billion worldwide, though Wonder Woman is still currently DCEU top grossing film domestically.

The film’s screenplay was written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall and co-starred Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Temuera Morrison, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Nicole Kidman.

DC has now dated eight films, including two this year such as next month’s “Shazam,” and a Joker origin film on October 4.
