Weezer Singer Rivers Cuomo Releases First Official Solo Single

By Jorell Zapanta

Weezer’s lead singer Rivers Cuomo has recently made his debut as a solo artist with a new solo track , “Medicine for Melancholy”. The new release is his first official single outside of the band and contains lyrics written in the hopeless-romantic style that much of the Weezer discography is known for.

“No reason for me to struggle/Just be there when I wake up/You’re my medicine for melancholy/Let me take you in,” Cuomo sings, portraying a depressed character whose unhappiness is alleviated by a newfound romance. Musically, the song carries a more relaxed, ethereal vibe compared to what is typical for Weezer.

While this is his official debut, Cuomo’s solo discography include his home demos and segregated material: Alone: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo , Alone II: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo , Not Alone – Rivers Cuomo and Friends: Live at Fingerprints, and Alone III: The Pinkerton Years.

Janelle Teases Upcoming Third Album with Make Me Feel and Django Jane

By Niy Birden

Dirty Computer – Wondaland

2018 is truly off to a great start in musical terms. Although the Grammys hit quite a sour spot with their very confusing awards ceremony this season, the results of intersectional feminism and the #TimesUp movement have nonetheless paved a way for female artists to have a more direct platform perfect for their voice. The Grammys were a testament to that.

Janelle Monae is no exception, but is without a doubt one of the rare artists with a genuine spirit. Her story though, is what is most fascinating for her reappearance in music:

If you are like most, Janelle Monae was first introduced to us with her massive single “Tightrope”, which uses musical elements made famous by James Brown, Little Richard and Chuck Berry to form a dance R&B sound as quite an oddity in the early 2000s. The song, using a dance move as a metaphor for one’s own doctrine, has since then become a staple of Monae’s and is what introduced many to the world as a funk-tip toeing signature song for the musical magician.

This was our introduction to Janelle’s altar ego and the center of the stage, Cindi Mayweather, a rogue android in a dystopian future who has been declared as an outlaw.

But if you are a mega-fan of Janelle’s, you’ll know very well that the introduction to this songstress was more like during active Outkast days, when her song was added on Big Boi’s Got Purp? compilation album, and soon after made two appearances on Outkast’s Idlewild album, which was actually a soundtrack to their film of the same name. Not long after, she released her first official solo album, which is a very rare copy of her earlier works.

Writer and director David Robert Mitchell had a breakthrough in 2014 with the supernatural horror film “It Follows.” Now he is back helming Andrew Garfield in a modern noir comedy-drama film “Under the Silver Lake” set in Los Angeles.

Andrew Garfield, who earned a nomination for an Academy Award Best Actor for his portrayal of Desmond T. Doss in “Hacksaw Ridge” (2016) stars in the neo-noir story of Sam who is searching for the truth behind the disappearance of an attractive, mysterious girl he met, which unravels into a deeper, more sinister conspiracy than he ever imagined.

“Under the Silver Lake” co-stars Topher Grace, Jimmi Simpson, Callie Hernandez, Riki Lindhome, Summer Bishil, Zosia Mamet, Luke Baines, and Patrick Fischler. Composer Disasterpeace, who worked with Mitchell on “It Follows” is also doing the score for ‘Silver Lake’. The film is set to premiere this summer on June 22.

Here’s the film’s synopsis courtesy of A24 Films:

Sam (Andrew Garfield) is a disenchanted 33-year-old who discovers a mysterious woman, Sarah (Riley Keough), frolicking in his apartment’s swimming pool. When she vanishes, Sam embarks on a surreal quest across Los Angeles to decode the secret behind her disappearance, leading him into the murkiest depths of mystery, scandal, and conspiracy in the City of Angels.

From writer-director David Robert Mitchell comes a sprawling, playful and unexpected mystery-comedy detective thriller about the Dream Factory and its denizens—dog killers, aspiring actors, glitter-pop groups, nightlife personalities, It girls, memorabilia hoarders, masked seductresses, homeless gurus, reclusive songwriters, sex workers, wealthy socialites, topless neighbors, and the shadowy billionaires floating above (and underneath) it all. Mining a noir tradition extending from Kiss Me Deadly and The Long Goodbye to Chinatown and Mulholland Drive, Mitchell uses the topography of Los Angeles as a backdrop for a deeper exploration into the hidden meaning and secret codes buried within the things we love.

Broadway Production Of “Frozen” Hits Broadway

By Creative Media Times

New York got some real cold weather this week as Frozen The Musical opened on Broadway. After a trial run at the Buell Theatre in Denver, Colorado last year, the stage musical finally opened Thursday night at New York City’s St. James Theatre.

Expectations are high for the musical, given the built-in audience that comes with its film version. Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, Frozen is a stage adaptation based on the popular 2013 Disney movie of the same name and is directed by Tony winner Michael Grandage, with its characters created by Jennifer Lee (Zootopia), who also wrote the film and wrote the book.

The film Frozen brought Disney to its animation glory, grossing more than $1.2 billion at worldwide boxoffice, with a sequel set for release next year.

The film’s popular anthem “Let It Go,” about the film’s lead Elsa’s realizing her dark magic, was similarly successful, becoming one of that year’s best-selling songs. Performed on the stage by Caissie Levy as Elsa, the song is undoubtedly one of the musical’s most anticipated highlights.

So far, “Frozen” is a big seller in its debut. According to Variety, it has grossed $926,840 for just four performances, and may be on its way to joining other Disney hits on Broadway such as The Lion King and Aladdin.

Interview: Pinar Toprak On Composing For Movies, “Krypton,” And The World’s Biggest Video Game

By Armando Inquig

It’s been a great year for composer Pinar Toprak so far. With Syfy’s “Krypton” set to premiere tonight (March 21 at 10 ET/PT), Fortnite is also sitting atop Apple’s gaming app store.

Pinar Toprak

Recently, Pinar composed additional music for the superhero ensemble Justice League. I was lucky to grab some minutes with Pinar Toprak to talk about her work on one of the year’s most anticipated TV series Krypton, which is set two generations before its destruction, and the surprising success of a game that is taking the world by storm.
(Interview date: May 20, 2018)

Krypton is finally premiering this week. What was it like scoring the series?

Pinar Toprak: It’s a wonderful experience. I’ve been a Superman fan since childhood. Its surreal. Every day I get to work on it. It’s amazing. I’m having the time of my life.

People have preconceived notions about (planet) Krypton, usually relating to how it ended, but not many before that. Where did you draw inspiration from?

PR: We wanted to do something that was different. Not what you would necessarily expect to hear because this is about Krypton. Obviously, we have the Superman legacy with us which is Superman’s grandfather. But it’s also about how they really lived and what happened then. Rather than thinking of it like a Superman film that we’re used to, I wanted to do something that is unique and unique to Krypton. So, it’s about finding different sounds and creating new music and new things, example for Brainiac. It’s really a lot of fun.

Did you incorporate scores from movies or TV series based on DC comics? Did they inspire you in some way?

PR: There were two moments on the first episode which will air tomorrow. There’s an homage to the Superman legacy, basically. But other than that, I wanted to do our own thing. Because this is unique, and this show has such a different angle to what we’re used to. So, it’s a whole other approach.

You’re talking about John William’s Superman theme, right? I thought that’s a cool touch.

PR: Yes, there are two moments on the episode that will air tomorrow. Thank you. It worked well.
