First Trailer For Woody Allen’s “Wonder Wheel”

By Creative Media Times

The director is back in another potential awards magnet “Wonder Wheel”, this time with Kate Winslet and Justin Timberlake. Amazon Studios has released the first trailer for the film, ahead of it’s closing night premiere at 55th New York Film Festival on October 14, 2017. Jim Belushi, Juno Temple co-star in the drama film set in late 1950s against the backdrop of 1950s Coney Island.

Allen also wrote the original script while Oscar-winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now) shot the film. Vittorio recently collaborated with Allen on 2016’s Cafe Society.

The trailer looks picturesque with beautiful shots of fluorishing Coney Island beaches and amusement park. It has Allen’s touch of old Hollywood vibe as it follows waitress Ginny (Wislet), her temperamental carousel operator husband Humpty (Belushi), a young aspring playwrite/lifeguard Mickey (Timberlake) and his estranged daughter Carolina (Temple) who is on the run from the mob.

The film will go into limited release December 1, marking the online retail giant’s first solo venture into self-distribution, seemingly moving closer into establishing itself a major film studio.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

WONDER WHEEL tells the story of four characters whose lives intertwine amid the hustle and bustle of the Coney Island amusement park in the 1950s: Ginny (Kate Winslet), an emotionally volatile former actress now working as a waitress in a clam house; Humpty (Jim Belushi), Ginny’s rough-hewn carousel operator husband; Mickey (Justin Timberlake), a handsome young lifeguard who dreams of becoming a playwright; and Carolina (Juno Temple), Humpty’s long-estranged daughter, who is now hiding out from gangsters at her father’s apartment. Cinematographer Vittorio Storaro captures a tale of passion, violence, and betrayal that plays out against the picturesque tableau of 1950s Coney Island.

“We’re thrilled that WaterTower Music is releasing soundtracks for two of our current projects: Batman & Harley Quinn and Batman vs. Two-Face!” explained the three Emmy Award-winning composers Michael McCuistion, Lolita Ritmanis and Kristopher Carter, collectively known as Dynamic Music Partners. “The “Batman vs. Two-Face” score gave us one final opportunity to honor the late Adam West as Batman, with all the Bams! Zings! and Pows! made famous by the original television series music written by musical icons Neil Hefti and Nelson Riddle. Collaboration with producer James Tucker always brings us great creative freedom!

“With “Harley Quinn,” we returned to the musical world of “Batman: The Animated Series,” which was our first collaboration with Bruce Timm as part of Shirley Walker’s team,” they continued. “Along with recreating that Dark Deco mood, we also paid homage to some of the greatest jazz scores of the 70’s and 80’s. Our long creative history with Bruce usually allows for a musical and dramatic shorthand while discussing the score; this particular project, with its comedic twists and turns, really kept us on our toes!

“We worked with our key music team on the scores (engineers Mark Mattson and Mako Sujishi, woodwind player John Yoakum, Greg Herzenach on guitars, Andris Mattson playing trumpet on “Two-Face,” and trumpet legend Wayne Bergeron on “Harley”) to take the listener on journeys that are simultaneously familiar and fresh for fans who will undoubtedly appreciate these distinct takes on the Batman universe. Both albums will be available October 6 at all digital music providers and on CD exclusively at FYE Stores:

Radiohead Among Nominees For 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

By Armando

Parlophone – EMI

It seems like it was only yesterday that Radiohead released their debut single “Creep,” the quintessential track from their album “Pablo Honey” which brought them worldwide success.

But that was 1992, making the influential English alternative rock band seemingly a shoo-in for induction on their first year of eligibility to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where performers qualify for induction 25 years after the release of their first commercial recording.

Along with Rage Against the Machine, Dire Straits, Judas Priest, among others, Radiohead is one of 9 first-time nominees for 2018 induction class. In total, there are 19 nominated artists announced on Tuesday.

By December this list will be truncated to five and revealed as Class of 2018. They will then be inducted during a ceremony at the Public Hall in Cleveland, Ohio on April 14th, 2018, an annual musical occasion which includes numerous performances by both the inductees and the presenters.

According to Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame website, fans will be able to participate in the selection process by selecting 5 artists at a time. This will comprise the “fan ballot” and will be tallied alongside the ballots from Rock Hall voting body, which is a group of more than 900 artists, historians and music-industry professionals.

Throughout the past, inductees include some of the most influential names in rock history, such as Chuck Berry, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Jackson 5. Last year, Electric Light Orchestra, Joan Baez, Journey, Pearl Jam, Tupak Shakur, and Yes comprised the 2017 Hall of Fame class.

Kate Winslet Joins Director James Cameron’s Sequel To Avatar

By Creative Media Times

Twenty years after boarding the Titanic, Kate Winslet is reuniting with the big boat’s captain James Cameron. Deadline reported Tuesday that the English actress is joining “Avatar” sequels.

“Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on Titanic, which was one of the most rewarding of my career,” says the director. Cameron adds that Winslet will be playing a character named Ronal, but didn’t mention how significant the role is.

Titanic was the highest grossing film of all time until Cameron broke that same record with Avatar in 2010. Along with co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, the epic romance-disaster film also brought Winslet global stardom.

Since then, Winslet has won an Academy Award Best Actress for her role in The Reader. She’s set to appear in two films this year: the romantic-disaster film The Mountain Between Us opposite Idris Elba, and Woody Allen’s drama film Wonder Wheel.

Last week, it was reported that production for Avatar sequels has began. Cameron will be shooting the sequels back-to-back and will cost $1 Billion making it the “most expensive shoot of its kind.” Last April, Avatar production team announced via their Facebook page that the four movies will be released in December of 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025.

Marvel Announces “Old Man Hawkeye” Series

Old Man Hawkeye is coming home. This January, the Marvel Universe will see the return of Clint Barton in a series penned by New York Daily News writer Ethan Sacks and artist Marco Checchetto (Star Wars: Captain Phasma). OLD MAN HAWKEYE will follow the avenging archer in a journey that takes place five years before the events of OLD MAN LOGAN, serving as a prequel to the popular series.

The 12-issue run will be set 45 years into the future, taking place in a darker world where the heroic archer must avenge his fallen teammates – while he still can. Sacks, a long-time Marvel fan who currently covers comics and Marvel for the New York Daily News, previously wrote a story for the third issue of SECRET EMPIRE: BRAVE NEW WORLD.

“Ethan’s been a journalist for years, and he’s a certified nerd,” said Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada. “I’ve known him well over a decade, and I never knew he could write non-fiction until one day, he told me, ‘I wrote this Star Wars one-shot.’ When I find anyone who’s talented, I always hand them to our editors and say, ‘do not be affected by the fact this is coming from me.’ And everyone loved the Star Wars story and what he had done.”

Jenna Mattison on Her Directorial Debut The Sound, and Being A Headstrong Filmmaker

Jenna Mattison

By Niy Birden

In Jenna Mattison’s directorial debut for “The Sound”, we experience Rose McGowan as Kelly, a completely in-for-it-all ghost buster who finds herself uncovering secrets of the death of a suicide victim in a subway station. Through social media and thoughtful, star-studded interactions both living and dead, we get to see the emotional breakthrough for a character based in survival and deep emotional and mental pain. But the character of Jenna Mattison I’ve found, is a far more interesting character, and like Kelly, has many sides.

Q: The film seems like an antithesis of your acting work- Is this by design?
J: You know, I had an injury about 10 years ago, and went through subsequent surgeries over 5 to 6 years and that essentially ended my acting career. And during that time period, I went deaf on one side…it was insane. And when something that intense happens to you, it changes your perspective a lot. And it kind of makes you a more soulful person, may be in ways darker? [laughs] So when I wrote the sound, it was definitely different than my previous writing because it was a very different experience for me. And within that, my writing as a filmmaker changed.

Q: Did you put a lot of your experience in the film, or find yourself seeing some similarities in there?

J: I wouldn’t say that, but definitely the importance of sound, you know, for someone who has had their hearing damaged. And you realize..how much, how we hear. And how we see the world, because it also changes because it gets heightened. You just realize how important it is. And so I got really interested in sound, and then this sort of you know, came out of that.

Q: How do you compare the creative process of doing a darker plot vs softer characters? Which inspire you more?

The Sound

J: I’m into all sorts of different things, so I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m really one or the other, but I do really enjoy sort of getting into characters and people that are a bit broken, that their lives (past) have shadowed their view of the world and kind of made them a bit darker, so yeah I guess in that, that is a reflection of the person I’ve grown to become since my injury and, you know…the [sarcastic]“nightmare that happened to me” [laughs].

We then started talking about how her injury was an empowering one, especially since women are really held into looking a certain way on screen.

“Disaster Artist” Win Big At San Sebastian Film Festival

Creative Media Times

New Line Cinema – A24

James Franco further cements his directing career as his latest film “Disaster Artist” wins the Golden Shell for Best Film, the top prize on Saturday’s 65th San Sebastian Film Festival 2017 Awards.

“This was a family affair, my brother, my sister, my old friend Seth Rogen,” Franco said while accepting the award. “It’s a very simple film about a crazy man but he had big dreams and it’s better than not having dreams. I hope that in these crazy times this brings a little light and inspiration.”

Based on Greg Sestero’s book of the same name, the film chronicles the making of The Room, a film by Tommy Wiseau which cinema publications label as “one of the worst films ever made.” The film stars James as Wiseau, while his brother Dave Franco as Sestero. The film also stars Rogen, Alison Brie, Ari Graynor, Josh Hutcherson, Jacki Weaver and Zac Efron. The Disaster Artist is scheduled for theatrical release Dec. 1.

Argentine film Alanis was also a big winner. The film’s star Sofia Gala won Silver Shell for Best Actress for her portrayal of a “young Buenos Aires mother who finds employment as a sex worker and struggles to live under the same laws that are supposed to protect her.” The film’s director Anahí Bernerí also won Silver Shell for Best Director.

The San Sebastián International Film Festival 2017 ran from Sept. 22 to 30 in the Spanish city of Donostia-San Sebastián. Throughout it’s history, the festival has hosted important cinema events such as the Vertigo international premiere in 1958. Since the festival has established itself as the highest cinema acclaim in Spain and the Spanish-speaking countries.

Justice League: New Colorful Character Posters Released

By Creative Media Times

DC – Warner Bros.

The posters were rolled out through the film’s Twitter account which also mentions that the prints will be available in October.

The posters are interesting and significant shift from DCEUs previous darker and gritty color palette which began with Man of Steel and continued with Batman V Superman, both directed by Zack Snyder. Joss Whedon took over directing duties of “Justice League” after Snyder family tragedy early this year. Whedon is now also credited for screenplay along with Chris Terrio.

Justice League is the second DCEU film this year, following the surprising record breaking run throughout summer of Wonder Woman, currently DCEU’s highest grossing installment.

Justice League is scheduled to be released on November 17, 2017 with an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Henry Cavill, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, Ciarán Hinds, Amy Adams, Willem Dafoe, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, and J. K. Simmons.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

“Blade Runner 2049” May Be Headed For Sci-Fi Glory

By Creative Media Times

Warner Bros. Pictures

Warner Bros. is having a great year so far and that seem continue with Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049,” the long-awaited sequel to the 1982 dystopian cult classic.

Review embargo was lifted today and the first set of reviews are glowing. As of 7 P.M., the neo-noir sci-fi stands at 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with 42 reviews counted.

USA Today’s Brian Truitt called it “best film so far this year,” while The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw described the film as “a gigantic spectacle of pure hallucinatory craziness.” Dan Jolin’s Empire Magazine is equally enamored with his excellent summation: “visually immaculate, swirling with themes as heart-rending as they are mind-twisting, 2049 is, without doubt, a good year. And one of 2017’s best.”

“Blade Runner 2049” is set three decades after the events of the 1982 landmark original with star Ryan Gosling as LAPD Officer K and Harrison Ford reprising his Rick Deckard role. Joining the duo is Jared Leto who is seen on the trailer as the wicked Niander Wallace, as well as Dave Bautista, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, David Dastmalchian, and Mackenzie Davis.

The excellent reviews can’t come at a better time. According to Fandango, “Blade Runner 2049” advance ticket sales is “significantly outpacing” that of “The Martian”, “Gravity” and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road.” All three films were box-office hits and critically lauded and received multiple Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, a level of success rarely seen in the sci-fi genre. “Fandango is seeing strong advance ticket sales for ‘Blade Runner 2049’ as the film continues to attract great buzz,” said Fandango managing editor Erik Davis.

“Blade Runner 2049” opens on October 6th 2017, almost a year after director Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi hit Arrival.
