The New Darkest Hour Trailer Released

The latest trailer for the historical war drama “Darkest Hour” has been released and it’s stunning (see below). Focus Features also released a new poster with the tagline “A Man With The Heart Of A Nation” (right).

Gary Oldman is literally unrecognizable, looking the spitting image of the larger-than-life British Prime Minister Winston Churchill who defied Hitler and rallied England during the darkest moments of World War II.

The masterful veteran actor, who has been strangely ignored by the Academy multiple times in the past has never won for an acting Oscar award. But he looks sensational here, and may have found the role of his illustrious career.

Oldman is gaining some of the best acclaim in his career for this portrayal after a standout play at Telluride Film Festival early this month, putting the actor in strong contention for the awards season. Darkest Hour will also be screening at Austin Film Festival.

The trailer is intense, with the track accompanied by ticking clock and war sirens in the background, capturing that dark and unpredictable period of a looming Nazi invasion.

“Darkest Hour” is the second film this year to chronicle events of wartime Dunkirk. But while Christopher Nolan’s eponymous blockbuster immersed viewers into the horrors at ground zero, Darkest Hour focus on its repercussions on other side of the Channel. They may in fact work as companion pieces or a great double feature watch.

Directed by Joe Wright (Atonement), and written by Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything), Darkest Hour follows Winston Churchill’s early days as British Prime Minister while Hitler closes in on Britain in World War II. Oldman is joined by a sterling cast including Ben Mendelsohn as King George VI, Kristin Scott Thomas as Churchill’s wife Clementine, Ronald Pickup as Neville Chamberlain, Stephen Dillane as Foreign Secretary Lord Halifax, and Lily James as personal secretary of Churchill Elizabeth Nel.

Focus Features is set to release Darkest Hour on November 22 in select cities.

Director Denis Villeneuve In Early Talks For “Cleopatra” Remake

With Denis Villeneuve’s latest “Blade Runner 2049” set to conquer boxoffice next weekend, the French Canadian writer/director is apparently also being eyed by Sony Pictures to helm “Cleopatra” remake, Deadline reports.

The news is another vote of confidence for the director’s profile as one of Tinseltown’s most sought after. After back to back acclaim for 2015’s “Sicario” and last year’s “Arrival”, early reviews for “Blade Runner 2049” have likewise been stellar.

The director is also currently developing an adaption of another 80s cult film “Dune” for Legendary Pictures, and is set to direct “The Son,” an adaptation of Jo Nesbø’s crime novel.

Angelina Jolie was once rumored to play the last Queen of Egypt, while James Cameron, David Fincher and Paul Greengrass were once either considered or showed interested but no commitments were announced.

The “Cleopatra” project is based on the book “Cleopatra: A Life”, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Stacy Schiff. The best-selling book was published in 2010 to great acclaim and appeared on year-end top 10 lists.

First Posters For “Pacific Rim: Uprising” Revealed

With the release of the trailer just around the corner, Universal Pictures released three new posters for “Pacific Rim: Uprising”, the first one unveiled on star John Boyega’s Twitter account Tuesday morning.

Since then, two more cool posters showed up online: one which features Scott Eastwood (Suicide Squad, The Fate of the Furious) in a stance similar to Boyega’s version of the poster, and another with graffiti-type illustration.

The sequel to the 2013 film sci-fi monster film will take place ten years after the events of the Battle of the Breach, when the Jaeger program has become a powerful global defense force, and the Pan Pacific Defense Corps calls upon a new generation of elite fighters against Kaiju threat. Boyega will play Jake, the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) from the original film.

Joining Boyega and Eastwood are Pacific Rim alums Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, and Burn Gorman. The film also stars Cailee Spaeny, Adria Arjona and Jing Tian. Uprising will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight, who is best known for his TV work on Starz series Spartacus. The original’s director Guillermo del Toro is credited for the story.

Pacific Rim: Uprising is scheduled to stomp into theaters on March 23, 2018.

“Avatar” Sequel Starts Shooting; Will Cost $1 Billion

It looks like it’s finally coming to fruition. After multiple false starts, the sequel to the highest grossing film of all time worldwide began production Monday, Deadline reports. But not without a hefty price tag: $1 Billion.

Director James Cameron is also shooting four sequels back-to-back, another uncharted territory. Couple that with Cameron’s penchant for pushing the boundaries of technology and cinema special effects, the sequels make it the “most expensive shoot of its kind.”

The closest we’ve seen a production of this magnitude was Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, which was filmed simultaneously in New Zealand.

The sequels certainly have plenty to live up to. The original Avatar was both a box-office phenomenon and an innovative undertaking at the time, where Cameron made use of his virtual camera system which showed the actors’ virtual counterparts interacting with their digital surroundings in real time, as well as innovative special effects with improved motion capture techniques.

Last April, Avatar production team announced via their Facebook page that the four movies will be released from 2020 to 2025, giving the filmmaker just three years to put the first film together.

“It” Sequel Coming To Theaters September 2019

Warner Bros. and New Line has set the stage for the return of Pennywise the evil clown. According to Hollywood Reporter on Monday, the imminent sequel to the blockbuster horror will be hitting screens on Sept. 6, 2019.

This means the studio is sticking to that same post-Labor Day weekend that saw It’s predecessor smash box-office records two weeks ago when the film opened to an unprecedented $123.4M domestically. That number is the largest September opening ever, as well as biggest horror domestic opening, bigger R-rater film, and biggest for a book adaptation.

The post-Labor Day weekend is traditionally a dumping ground smaller films. But Stephen King’s hit film helped redefine the box-office calendar, with this month’s overall film grosses now on track to break all time September record, a welcome turn around for Hollywood after a sluggish summer season.

Though director Andy Muschietti is still in negotiations to return, co-scriptwriter Gary Dauberman is already on board to come back for the sequel. According to Variety’s interview this summer with the director: “Part one is only about the kids. Part two is about these characters 30 years later as adults, with flashbacks to 1989 when they were kids”.

The currently untitled sequel is currently up against an untitled Blumhouse Productions film slated to open on same date, though this early a lot will most likely change.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” Is Officially Completed

Rian Johnson has completed work on “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” the director announced on instagram.

The post shows a selfie of the director with some of the film’s post-production staff. “Aaaand that’s a wrap on the hardest working post production team in the galaxy,” Johnson posted. “Going to miss sitting in dark rooms with these goobers.”

With three months remaining before the film’s release, we will most likely see a new trailer soon. The film’s last trailer dropped in April and there have been scant info about the film since, save for publicity photos and magazine covers more than a month ago.

The Last Jedi will see the return of Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac, and Carrie Fisher in her last role. Joining the cast this time around are Laura Dern, Benicio del Toro and Kelly Marie Tran. It is the second film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy after 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Produced by Lucasfilm and continues the events established in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi will storm theaters December 15th, 2017.

Album Review: “Double Dutchess” by Fergie

Today, B.E.P member Fergie released her highly (and we do mean highly) long-awaited album Double Dutchess after a staggering 11 years. You thought 3 years was a long time? Or even 5? Try again.

But Fergie has always been one to surprise her audiences. While her absence has been one of constant discussion, she has been kind enough to surprise us with generous music tidbits, such as her infamous star-studded “M.I.L.F. $” released earlier in the year, and a few others. But now, Fergie has made it a point to let us know: we’d better not forget who she is. While her visuals do mostly differentiate with tone and genre, the effect makes us remember why we loved dancing to and watching her bangers like “London Bridge” and even “Fergalicious”. With a complimentary visual album slowly making its way into the YouTube-o-sphere, here’s a glance at her new album, Double Dutchess:

The album starts off with “Hungry”, a dark pad complimented with an even-darker foreign sung sample, and immediately we hear Rick Ross’ authoritative voice, having Fergie back him up. It’s a bit weird to hear Fergie, of all people, adapting to trap music, but it is fair to say that she was a part of one of the most commercially -successful and impactful rap groups ever, that being Black Eyed Peas. It was no secret that they were not afraid of adapting to new sounds.

In fact, their sound is what helped the hip hop/rap genre incorporate a new pop integration. Some heavily criticized it, but eventually a very large amount of people globally all decided that the music was of noteworthy cause. For that reason being, if there are any female rappers that have the full right to play along with new sounds unashamedly, it is definitely Fergie Ferg. She actually sounds more authentic, compared to even most newer male rappers. The traditional snare hits, paired with the chorus, cello-like pad and glitch effect, opens up the album in a very, as she so fairly puts it, ambitious way.

Both she and Ross do a very nice way of giving off the “Hungy” vibe. The paired music video also of course seals in the deal. It’s suffice to say that Fergie’s really taking a leap visually. An early shot of the video shows Fergie looking into a device normally worn during eye exams, immediately finding a similarity to the album art cover of Justin Timberlake’s 2012 album The 20/20 Experience. And the rest of the video makes the perfect thematic change from her previous videos with its dark-toned colors in high contrast and trippy double-shots. Very fitting for a modern rap video. The car, the smoke, but still Fergie’s glamour.

Donner’s “Superman: The Movie” 3-Hour Cut To Be Released

The movie that presaged the onslaught of comic-book films is back in a 3-hour plus version, an extended cut of Richard Donner’s 1978 classic with 40 minutes of extra footage, Warner Archive Collection‘s Facebook page announced.

This version will be paired with Donner’s Special Edition Director’s Cut which was previously released back in 2000.

ABC first aired a similar version back in 1982, which was a special 3-hour plus cut dubbed “Salkind International Extended Cut”, an extended version of what was released theatrically. Superman: The Movie originally ran for 137 minutes.

That extended version broadcast of a major blockbuster was unheard of at the time and happened over the course of two nights. Many of the added footage have since showed up as deleted extras on previous releases, but never as a complete official release on dvd nor on blu-ray.

Linda Hamilton Returning To “Terminator” Reboot

Its been 26 years since the world saw Linda Hamilton play badass heroine Sarah Connor in James Cameron’s groundbreaking sci-fi action Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Yesterday, according to Hollywood Reporter, Hamilton will be reprising her role in the currently untitled reboot.

Cameron and “Terminator” himself Arnold Schwarzenegger are already attached to the planned film, though Cameron is not directing but producing the project and working on a story. Instead, Tim Miller (Deadpool) will be directing the film. Cameron is currently involved in the pre-production of the first two of four planned Avatar sequels.

“There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys, but there isn’t an example of that for women,” Cameron stated, hoping the film will make a statement on gender roles the same way Terminator 2 did back in 1991 with Hamilton’s strong portrayal of Sarah. Cameron was briefly married to Hamilton from 1997 to 1999.

According to the article, the film will be a direct sequel to Terminator 2, which means that reboots and installments released in between such as Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), Terminator Salvation (2009) and Terminator Genisys (2015) which intended to reboot the franchise, will be ignored. Neither Cameron nor Hamilton were involved in those titles, although Hamilton provided her voice for Salvation, while Cameron was reportedly consulted on Genisys.

In Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Sarah Connor’s son John (Nick Stahl) mentioned that she died of a disease. How Hamilton’s character will be brought back remains unknown, though not implausible in Terminator franchise’s time-travel plots.

“Breathe” Trailer: Andrew Garfield In Serkis’ Directing Debut

Andrew Garfield might be headed for another awards contention in Andy Serkis’ directorial debut “Breathe.”

Based on a true story, Garfield plays Robin Cavendish, a young man who became paralyzed from the neck down after contracting polio while his wife Diana, played by Claire Foy, inspires him through his struggles. Cavendish became a pioneering advocate for the disabled.

Serkis, known for his motion-capture roles as Gollum in Lord of the Rings and as Caesar in Planet of the Apes series, is behind the camera this time. Serkis gets to do both tasks in next year’s Jungle Book, the live-action adventure fantasy film from Warner Bros which he is directing as well as voicing his motion capture performance as Baloo.

Gorgeously shot by multi-Oscar winner Robert Richardson, “Breathe” also stars Tom Hollander, Hugh Bonneville, Dean-Charles Chapman, Miranda Raison, Stephen Mangan. The film played earlier this month at the Toronto International Film Festival and will open in theaters on Oct. 13.
