Alex Winter’s Dark Comedy Adulthood Set for September Release

adulthoodParamount has released the trailer for Adulthood, a dark comedy thriller directed by Alex Winter and starring Josh Gad and Kaya Scodelario. The film will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before opening in select theaters September 19, 2025, followed by a digital release on September 23.

The story follows siblings Megan (Scodelario) and Noah (Gad), who return to their childhood home after their mother is hospitalized. While cleaning out the basement, they uncover a long-buried corpse hidden in the walls. Their attempt to quietly dispose of the remains sets off a chain of escalating problems, including police involvement and blackmail from their mother’s caretaker (Billie Lourd), who claims to know the truth about the murder.

The cast also includes Anthony Carrigan, Alex Winter, Chris Candy, Jinny Wong, and Joel Lacoursiere. The screenplay is by Michael M.B. Galvin, with Winter producing alongside Michael Cho, Tim Lee, Danny Roberts, Jackie Langelier, H.S. Naji, Scott Kroopf, Russell Hollander, and Lisa Wolofsky. Production Underway on 1980s Crime Thriller “Mercy Mercy Me” from Wes Miller

mercy-mercy-meFilmmaker Wes Miller (A Day to Die, Black Heat) has begun production of, Mercy Mercy Me, a crime action thriller set in 1985. The film is written and directed by Miller and features a lead cast including Lil Mama, Jason Mitchell (Mudbound, Straight Outta Compton), and Carlos Ponce (Couples Retreat, Ice Age: Collision Course).

Produced by BLacklight, the film follows two former outlaws, Mercy (Lil Mama) and Khaos (Mitchell), who are drawn back into criminal life for one final job. Their mission puts them in conflict with organized crime, a corrupt detective (Ponce), and unresolved personal histories. Miller describes the story as a reflection on “grief, guilt, and the struggle to find forgiveness,” influenced by themes of generational pain and redemption.

Mercy Mercy Me is financed by Blacklight, with Andrew van den Houten and Miller producing, Joseph O’Connor and Lloyd Watts co-producing, and Jessie Jalee and Chad Ghiron serving as executive producers. Sales for both domestic and international markets are being handled by 79th & Broadway Entertainment.

Known for blending socially conscious narratives with genre storytelling, Miller continues his focus on character-driven plots set against stylized backdrops. His past work includes River Runs Red, Call Her King, and Black Heat.

New Spy Thriller “Butterfly” to Premiere August 13 on Prime Video

butterflyAmazon MGM Studios has released the official trailer for Butterfly, a new six-episode series set to stream starting August 13, 2025.

The series stars Daniel Dae Kim as David Jung, a former U.S. intelligence operative now living in South Korea. The plot follows Jung as he becomes the target of a sociopathic assassin named Rebecca, assigned to kill him by a covert agency called Caddis.

The show is based on the 2015 graphic novel by Arash Amel and is co-created by Ken Woodruff (Gotham) and novelist Steph Cha, who also serve as executive producers alongside Kim. Kitao Sakurai directed the first two episodes.

The ensemble cast includes Reina Hardesty, Piper Perabo, Charles Parnell, Kim Ji-hoon, Kim Tae-hee, Sung Dong-il, Lee Il-hwa, Sean Dulake, and others. According to the creators, Butterfly will focus on psychological tension, espionage, and family dynamics rather than conventional action tropes.

The series aims to blend American and Korean perspectives in its storytelling and production.

Hood River Entertainment Begins Production on Mystery Comedy Thriller Jackrabbit

Hood River Entertainment has officially begun production on Jackrabbit, a mystery-comedy-thriller written and directed by Emmy and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Ballard C. Boyd (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert). The film is being independently produced and will be sold both domestically and internationally by 79th & Broadway Entertainment.

The cast includes Kuhoo Verma (Plan B), Taylor Ortega (Another Simple Plan), Soojeong Son (Kaleidoscope), Saamer Usmani (3 Body Problem), and Mark Gessner (Super Pumped).

Set in NYC, the story follows George (Verma), an investigative reporter who finds herself living with Avery (Ortega), a chaotic aspiring actress, after reconnecting with childhood best friend Trish (Son). When Trish mysteriously vanishes, George and Avery are forced to join forces to uncover the truth—only to find that her disappearance is just the beginning.

The graphic yet comedic tale is described by Boyd as part “odd couple” comedy and part suspense mystery, ultimately about trust, secrecy, and unlikely collaboration. The film was co-produced by MJ Bernier and executive produced by Alex Cirillo and Dani Faith Leonard, with creative input from the late Judy Belushi Pisano, whose vision helped shape the project before her passing.

Supernatural Thriller “The Drowned” Set for Digital Release

the-drownedSunrise Films and Vertigo Releasing have announced the digital rollout of The Drowned, the debut feature from director and writer Samuel Clemens. The supernatural creature thriller will launch on digital platforms starting October 6 in the UK and Ireland, followed by North America on October 7, and Australia/New Zealand on October 8.

Previously titled The Waterhouse and premiered at FrightFest Halloween, the film stars Alan Calton (Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning), Dominic Vulliamy (Rules of the Game), and Lara Lemon (War of the Worlds: The Attack).

Woven with references to Greek mythology, The Drowned follows three thieves who have just stolen a priceless painting and arrive at a secluded safe house by the sea, only to discover their fourth accomplice is missing. They must question whether one of them was responsible for her disappearance, or if the blame lies with a more sinister presence lurking in the deep water below.

The film is produced by Agam Jain, George Clemens, and Fernando Ruiz (Take The Shot Films), alongside James Kermack and Julien Loeffler (Featuristic Films). Worldwide sales are handled by Raven Banner Entertainment.

Teaser Trailer Released for Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia, Starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons

bugoniaFocus Features has released the first teaser trailer for Bugonia, the latest film from director Yorgos Lanthimos. The dark comedy-thriller stars Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons as two men who believe a corporate executive is part of an alien plot to destroy Earth.

The film follows Teddy, a reclusive beekeeper, and his cousin Don, who kidnap Michelle, a pharmaceutical executive, convinced she is working with extraterrestrials. Based on the 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet!, Bugonia blends paranoia, absurdity, and deadpan humor in Lanthimos’s signature style.

The cast also includes Alicia Silverstone, Stavros Halkias, and Aidan Delbis. Bugonia marks another collaboration between Lanthimos and Stone, following The Favourite, Poor Things, and Kinds of Kindness.

Bugonia opens in theaters October 24, 2025.

Trailer Drops for Action Thriller Guns & Moses, Starring Dermot Mulroney and Christopher Lloyd

The official trailer for Guns & Moses has been released ahead of the film’s nationwide theatrical debut on July 18. The action-thriller, inspired by the 2019 Chabad of Poway synagogue shooting, centers on a rabbi forced into action after a violent attack on his community.

Directed by Salvador Litvak and co-written with Nina Litvak, the film stars Mark Feuerstein (Royal Pains), Neal McDonough (Tulsa King), Alona Tal (Veronica Mars), Craig Sheffer (A River Runs Through It), Jackson A. Dunn (Brightburn), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), and Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding).

Reframing faith and resilience through the lens of modern self-defense, Guns & Moses draws from Litvak’s own training with Magen Am, a Jewish volunteer security force. “When we say never again, it means we need to step up and defend ourselves,” said Litvak, emphasizing the film’s real-world stakes.

Produced by Lee Broda and Aimee Schoof, both known for socially conscious storytelling, the project arrives at a time of increasing concern over antisemitic violence in the U.S. and abroad.

Guns & Moses opens in theaters July 18.

Arthouse Thriller Sweet Relief Opens June 27 in Theaters and on VOD

sweet-reliefThe indie thriller Sweet Relief, written and directed by emerging filmmaker Nick Verdi, will open for a one-week theatrical run at Laemmle Encino Town Center on June 27. The film will also be available the same day on premium VOD through Eventive.

Set in a small New England town, Sweet Relief follows two intertwining storylines: one involving teens playing an online “murder challenge” game as a joke, and another focused on a disaffected millennial couple whose boredom leads them down a dangerous path. As events spiral, the film builds toward a disturbing and unexpected climax.

The ensemble cast includes Alisa Leigh, B.R. Yeager, Adam Michael Kozack, Lucie Rosenfeld, Jocelyn Lopez, and Paul Lazar in a notable turn as Mr. McDaniel. The film was executive produced by Tribeca Award-winner Elliot Gipson (Charliebird), who launched Art Brut Films in 2023. Sweet Relief marks the label’s first feature release.

The 87-minute arthouse thriller has screened at several festivals, including the Chattanooga Film Festival, Philadelphia Unnamed Film Festival, and Another Hole in the Head.

A wider VOD rollout is planned later in the year.

The psychological thriller The Man in My Basement, starring Corey Hawkins and Willem Dafoe, is slated for release in theaters and on Hulu in Fall 2025. The film is directed by Nadia Latif and based on the novel of the same name by acclaimed author Walter Mosley.

Set in Sag Harbor, New York, the story follows Charles Blakey (Hawkins), an out-of-work man facing foreclosure on his family home. A mysterious offer from a wealthy businessman, Anniston Bennet (Dafoe), to rent his basement for the summer sets off a disturbing psychological and moral spiral.

The cast also includes Anna Diop, Jonathan Ajayi, Gershwyn Eustache Jnr., Pamela Nomvete, and Tamara Lawrance. The screenplay was written by Mosley and Latif, with production by Diane Houslin, John Giwa-Amu, Dave Bishop, and Len Rowlands.

The Man in My Basement is presented by Andscape and is positioned as a genre-driven exploration of race, trauma, and moral ambiguity. A teaser and first-look images were released ahead of its upcoming fall debut.

‘Squid Game’ Season 3 to Premiere on Netflix June 27

squid-game-3Netflix has announced that Squid Game Season 3, the final chapter of its globally popular thriller series, will premiere on June 27, 2025. The release follows the events of Season 2’s violent conclusion, where Gi-hun’s attempted rebellion ended in failure and heavy losses.

The new season continues the story of Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) as he confronts betrayal, despair, and deadlier games. As the mysterious Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) resumes overseeing the contests and the VIPs return, Gi-hun must face increasingly high-stakes choices. Meanwhile, his brother Jun-ho continues his secret investigation into the games’ origins.

Returning cast members include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, and Wi Ha-jun. Season 3 was developed as part of a larger story originally written to span Seasons 2 and 3, according to series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk.
