PS5 Has Just Over 650GB Usable Storage Space

After the operating system takes up the space it needs, you’ll have far less than the rated 825GB SSD suggests.

The PlayStation 5 launches in just over a week on November 12, but Sony still hasn’t concretely stated just how much of the SSD will be available for you to install games on. We have confirmed that it’s going to be just over 650GB.

The PS5 ships with a custom 825GB SSD, but not all of that will be free for game installations. The console’s operating system needs some of that space from the get-go. We’ve tested it ourselves, and there is roughly 667GB free to install games.

That’s less than the Xbox Series X, but that was always likely to be the case considering the PS5’s smaller SSD overall. The Xbox Series X ships with a 1TB SSD, with its operating system reducing available storage down to 802GB.

PlayStation 5 will reportedly be hard to find after it launches later this year, and it could cost as much as $550

Sony’s new PlayStation 5 gamepad, the DualSense. Sony

This holiday season, next-generation game consoles from both Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox are expected.

Though we’ve seen parts of both consoles, and know plenty of details about both, one major question remains: How much?

In the case of the PlayStation 5, consumers could be looking at a price in the $500 to $550 range, according to a new Bloomberg report.

That unusually high price — $100 more than the launch price of the PlayStation 4 — is reportedly due to the console’s “ambitious specs,” which are driving Sony’s decision to price the console higher than in its previous generation. As a result, Sony is said to be producing fewer launch PS5 consoles than it has in prior generations as the company anticipates lower consumer demand due to the high price.

MediaMation’s (MMI) MX4D® Technology used in Screenvision’s Xbox commercial

Screenvision Media and Xbox Push the Boundaries of Cinematic Advertising with Immersive Ad Experience using MediaMation’s (MMI) MX4D® Technology

Screenvision Media, a national leader in cinema advertising, has teamed up with Xbox to announce the national debut of two new cinematics that utilize MMI’s immersive MX4D Motion EFX technology in select theatres. The Xbox advertisements will provide moviegoers across America with a 4D motion ad experience that will run in select MX4D technology enabled theatres from September 14 – November 1.

“Screenvision Media strives to bring the newest and most innovative technology to our brand partners and we’re thrilled that Xbox will be the first advertiser to utilize this technology in all our MX4D enabled theatres nationwide,” said Christine Martino, executive vice president of Ad Sales, Screenvision Media. “MX4D gives our partners, like Xbox, the opportunity to seamlessly transform their traditional ads into disruptive, engaging and interactive experiences for moviegoers across the country.”

MMI’s MX4D technology is the newest evolution in the 4D cinema experience. It enables advertisers to convert any existing ad into an immersive experience via in-seat sensory technology and theatrical effects, including seat rumblers, wind generators, strobe lights, scent and more, allowing moviegoers to truly feel part of the action. Xbox’s advertisements, supporting the October 2 launch of open-world racing game “Forza Horizon 4” (September 14 – October 11) and Xbox Game Pass (October 12 – November 1), Microsoft’s gaming membership, are the first ads to utilize this technology to provide moviegoers a seat shifting, heart racing advertising experience.

“We’re proud to help Screenvision Media provide dynamic experiences and tailored, state-of-the art solutions to their advertising partners, like Xbox,” said Dan Jamele, Chief Innovation and Technology Officer, MMI. “We want to show how traditional ads can be further enhanced with MX4D technology and can’t wait to see the positive reaction in theatres.”
