SDCC 2024: The National Association of Voice Actors Returns to San Diego Comic-Con

NAVA is returning to SDCC after a successful panel last year. NAVA is the leading advocate for voice actors and AI protections, will lead a discussion on how new standards need to be built for artists, performers, and producers to collaborate on great products, while still protecting individual rights to intellectual property, performance, and publicity.

One issues that is ever looming is the threat of AI, and very likely to be a major panel issue. “Entertainment performers and artists of all kinds must adapt to this groundbreaking technology that can not only replicate their words, art, images, voices, and movements but also feed machine learning to create entirely new content,” according to the release.

Moderated by voice actor Linsay Rousseau (Transformers: War for Cybertron, media affairs director for NAVA), panelists include voice actors Tim Friedlander (president/founder of NAVA, Like a Dragon), JP Karliak (founder/president of QueerVox, X-Men ’97), Carin Gilfry (co-founder of NAVA, Starfield), Matthew “Reazon” Parham (director of operations for NAVA, Marvel’s MechStrike), and lawyer Scott Mortman (founder/CEO of global business consulting and legal advisory services AREDA Ventures, council for NAVA).

The new trailer for the upcoming psychological thriller “Conclave,” Academy Award winner Edward Berger’s follow-up to 2022’s “All Quiet on the Western Front,” has been released.

In the film, Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, selecting a new Pope. Once the Catholic Church’s most powerful leaders have gathered from around the world and are locked together in the Vatican halls, Lawrence finds himself at the center of a conspiracy and discovers a secret that could shake the very foundation of The Church.

John Lithgow, Lucian Msamati, Brían F. O’Byrne, Carlos Diehz, Merab Ninidze, Thomas Loibl, and Sergio Castellitto co-star.

Based on the book by Robert Harris, the film is set for a U.S. theatrical release on November 1st.

Eisner-Award Winning “The Silver Coin” Creator Michael Walsh Launches Cyberpunk Series “Nullhunter” In October

Michael Walsh, the Eisner Award-winning creator of The Silver Coin, as well as upcoming Skybound miniseries Universal Monsters: Frankenstein and The Horizon Experiment: The Sacred Damned, is setting out on an epic quest with rising star artist Gustaffo Vargas (Marvel’s Voices X-Men) to create new sci-fi series Nullhunter, a neon-infused cyberpunk retelling of the Labors of Hercules set amongst the stars. This reimagining of classic Greek mythology, that interplays ’80s-inspired dystopian storytelling and art in the same vein as fan-favorites like Ronin and Blade Runner, will set sail when issue #1 hits shelves in October.

In Nullhunter, Clay is a war hero who faces unspeakable tragedy after returning home. Seeking justice, he’s forced into service for his estranged father’s powerful company, OLYMP0S. His first mission takes him to faraway N3M-3A on the trail of a hijacked shipment of war lions. In seeking exoneration, this quest of twelve near-impossible labors will lead Clay to the very edges of space as he discovers the true source of evil in the cosmos.

“When I was a kid, I was obsessed with Greco-Roman mythology. I’d spend hours pouring over old mythology books that I’d rented from the library while drawing my own versions of Hercules, Zeus, Poseidon, and all the larger-than-life gods and monsters. For a long time, I’ve wanted to take a crack at making a Hercules comic, but I could never find a unique and original way in,” said Walsh.

The Art Directors Guild at 2024 San Diego Comic-Con

The Art Directors Guild (ADG, IATSE Local 800) returns to the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con to highlight the contributions of ADG artisans to the genre works celebrated at this annual fan conference.

The ADG’s programming includes a panel discussion with an audience Q&A titled “Video Games Go Hollywood: The Art Department,” a booth on the exhibit floor, three portfolio review sessions and two award presentations at the Masquerade Costume Competition.

Highlighting the growing impact of video game IP on the entertainment industry, the ADG is curating a panel called “Video Games Go Hollywood: The Art Department,” featuring panelists: Production Designer Howard Cummings (“Fallout”); Concept Illustrator Thang Le (“Fallout”); Production Designer Marc Fisichella (“Five Nights at Freddy’s”); Art Director Mark Terry (“Five Nights at Freddy’s”); and Production Designer Victoria Paul (“Twisted Metal”). The panel will be moderated by Set Designer Tim Croshaw (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Loki”) and offers an exclusive behind-the-scenes look into the art departments responsible for the dreaming, drawing and designing that translates these iconic video game environments into the world of film and television. Lucha: A Wrestling Tale, Drum Song: The Rhythm of Life, Miwene

Brooklyn’s Greenpoint Film Festival announced the film lineup for its 13th edition, taking place August 7-11. GFF will kick things off with Marco Ricci’s Lucha: A Wrestling Tale on Opening Night, a two-film retrospective of New York City-based Spanish filmmaker Alex Lora’s The Masterpiece and Unicorns as its Centerpiece presentation, and a documentary double feature including the US Premiere of Kelly Moneymaker’s Drum Song: The Rhythm of Life and festival favorite Miwene, directed by Keith Heyward, Jennifer Berglund, Gange Anita Yeti Enomenga, and Obe Beatriz Nenquimo Nihua for Closing Night.

Additional US Premieres among the narrative feature film lineup include; Marco Amenta’s Anna, Paweł Wyszomirski’s The Green Ink, Adrian Apanel’s Horror Story, Jan Jakub Kolski’s Loonies, Paweł Maślona’s Scarborn, and Maciej Adamek’s Unspoken is a portrait of a determined and resilient young man who stutters but refuses to let it hinder his aspirations to become the Polish champion in acrobatics. The documentary features making their US Premieres include Viktor Witkowski’s Moje Własne Słowa (In My Words), Dominic Allen’s Planet Wind – The Global Story of Offshore Wind, and Sonia Zawitkowski and Jenna Kathleen Taylor’s Thank You for Sharing.

The film festival has more than doubled the number of films screened from last year, now totaling 118 films (20 feature-length, 95 shorts, and 3 XR exhibits). GFF’s footprint has also become larger with additional screens added to The Boiler / ELM Foundation location (191 N. 14th Street), and Film Noir (122 Meserole Avenue) also added to the mix.

The HISTORY Channel’s “The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch” To Make Panel Debut at San Diego Comic Con

The HISTORY Channel’s hit nonfiction series “The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch” is making its debut at San Diego Comic-Con with an exclusive panel featuring aerospace engineer, astrophysicist and lead scientist Dr. Travis Taylor, Defense Intelligence Senior Executive (Retired) Jay Stratton, and others.

Official Trailer For “City of Dreams” Drama Thriller Released

Inspired by true events, “City of Dreams” is written, directed and produced by Mohit Ramchandani. It stars Ari Lopez, Renata Vaca, Alfredo Castro, Paulina Gaitán, Jason Patric and Diego Calva.

The film follows Jesús, a young Mexican boy whose dreams of becoming a soccer star are shattered when he’s trafficked across the border and sold to a sweatshop making fast fashion in downtown Los Angeles.

Thrust into a world of exploitation and despair; he’s forced to adhere to the grueling work schedule dictated by El Jefe, a boss who promises freedom for those who complete their quotas. Despite Jesus’s hellish existence, he finds solace in Elena, a girl who was similarly betrayed and sold into slavery. When she goes missing and another co-worker Carlito’s is severely beaten, Jesus realizes that his only hope for freedom is to make a daring escape.

City of Dreams is set for release on August 30, 2024.
