In 2018, “Africa” follows us everywhere, like the sound of wild dogs crying out in the night. The whole weird history of American culture is in this song somewhere
Nothing sums up 2018 like the fact that Toto’s “Africa” has become our unofficial anthem. It’s a song that’s ridiculous by definition — an Eighties ode to Africa by a bunch of L.A. rock dudes who’d never set foot in the place. But something about this song speaks to our moment. It’s the new “Don’t Stop Believin’” — a mega-cheese classic of Eighties sentiment that’s gotten bizarrely popular in recent years, beloved by hipsters and moms and tone-deaf karaoke singers screaming “I bless the rains down in Africa!” Love it or hate it, you’ve probably heard it today. You’ll hear it tomorrow. This damn song follows you everywhere, like the sound of wild dogs crying out in the night.
Toto’s Africa is a place that doesn’t exist and never did — this song has nothing to do with the continent, unless you count that groovy synth-kalimba solo. But the song turns out to be a map of today’s America, which is why it’s much bigger now than it was in the Eighties. As Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro summed it up, “A white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he’s never been there, he can only tell what he’s seen on TV or remembers in the past.” Continue reading →

Will Smith and Tom Holland lend their voices to this latest animated spy comedy film.
20th Century Fox has released the delightful trailer this week and it features as very intriguing twist. Watch the trailer below and try to make sense of it.
Directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane in their directorial debuts, the film is based on the animated short Pigeon: Impossible by Lucas Martell and also features the voices of Ben Mendelsohn, Karen Gillan, Rashida Jones, DJ Khaled, and Masi Oka.
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
Super spy Lance Sterling (Will Smith) and scientist Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) are almost exact opposites. Lance is smooth, suave and debonair. Walter is… not. But what Walter lacks in social skills he makes up for in smarts and invention, creating the awesome gadgets Lance uses on his epic missions. But when events take an unexpected turn, Walter and Lance suddenly have to rely on each other in a whole new way. And if this odd couple can’t learn to work as a team, the whole world is in peril. SPIES IN DISGUISE is an animated comedy set in the high-octane globe-trotting world of international espionage.
Spies in Disguise is set for release in theaters Sept. 13, 2019.
Sir Ridley Scott is revisiting ancient Rome with a sequel to “Gladiator” moving forward. Variety is reporting that the director/producer is developing the follow-up to the 2000 historical epic drama.
Screenwriter Peter Craig (The Town, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and 2) will write the script. He is also credited for the upcoming sequel “Top Gun: Maverick.”
The British film-maker last helmed the “All the Money in the World,” a film about the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III and “Alien: Covenant,” both of which were released last year.
Last year, the director mentioned that the script was “on the shelf”. In fact, the sequel to Gladiator has been mentioned over the years since Gladiator’s successful run at the box-office, eventually culminating into an oscar best picture win and a best actor win for its star Russell Crowe. Gladiator grossed $460 million worldwider.
It would of course be difficult to bring Crowe back into the film given the fate of his character and events that transpired in the original, though many other sources claim the sequel will focus on Lucius, son of Lucilla (played by Connie Nielsen in the original film).
The storyline will center on Lucius, the son of Connie Nielsen’s character Lucilla from the original film. Lucius is the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus, the Roman leader killed by Russell Crowe’s Maximus.
There is currently no information about the production star nor release of the film.
As Netflix’s The Witcher series began filming, a first look at its lead Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia has been released.
The 23 second screen test clip features Cavill in character costume looking serious and intense, sporting long, white hair that is partly pony-tailed on the back, and then eventually sipping from a potion bottle.
The news that Cavill will be playing the lead role of Geralt of Rivia was revealed last September. “The Witcher” is a fantasy series by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski.
Geralt is the titular Witcher in the short stories, novels and video games which takes place in medieval fantasy setting. He is one of the last witchers, a trained monster slayer for hire to slay deadly monstrous beasts.
Cavill recently played a CIA assassin in this summer’s blockbuster hit Mission: Impossible – Fallout starting Tom Cruise. He also portrayed Superman in WB/DC Comics’, Batman v Superman and Justice League.

The film is set for release in theaters and on digital platforms on November 2, 2018.
Here is what critics are saying so far:
“In this debut feature, Holness has delivered a singularly clear and horrifying vision – a simple but overwhelmingly frightening horror story, wrapped in atmosphere so thick you could drown in it. ” – Birth.Movies.Death
“Holness makes his debut behind the camera in expertly clammy style.”
– Financial Times
Written and directed by Matthew Holness from producers James Harris, Mark Lane, Wayne Marc Godfrey, Robert Jones, the film stars Sean Harris and Alun Armstrong
Here’s the film’s synopsis:
A disgraced children’s puppeteer (Sean Harris, Mission: Impossible – Fallout) returns to his dilapidated childhood home and lecherous stepfather (Alun Armstrong), intent on destroying ‘Possum’, a hideously malformed spider-puppet he carries with him in a brown leather case. His mind flooded with painful half-memories and nightmarish visions, he soon finds himself embroiled in a local investigation for a missing boy, progressively unsure of what’s real and what’s not. All the while Possum seems to mock his suffering at every turn.
A hallucinatory venture into a truly damaged psyche, Matthew Holness’ (Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace) POSSUM is a twisted trip of terror where both nothing and everything is exactly as it seems.
