Michelangelo Antonioni’s First Masterpiece, IL GRIDO

IL-GRIDOIL GRIDO (1957), the widely underseen early masterwork by Italian auteur Michelangelo Antonioni, will run at Film Forum in a new 4K restoration from Friday, November 8 through Thursday, November 14.

Deserted by the mother of his child, Aldo, a factory worker (played by Hollywood tough guy Steve Cochran) wanders through the Po Valley in search of solace and connection. His romantic prospects—including a gas-station owner (Dorian Gray), a sex worker (Lyn Shaw), and an old girlfriend (Betsy Blair, Oscar nominee for the prior year’s Marty and Mrs. Gene Kelly)—fizzle out into alienation and despair.

Made three years before his international breakthrough L’avventura, this rare departure from exploring affluent society is among Antonioni’s most politically trenchant films and a raw expression of anguish that remains one of Italian cinema’s great underappreciated gems. Strikingly composed with atmospheric photography by the great Gianni Di Venanzo, IL GRIDO reveals a director in the process of discovering his artistic signature.

Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, from the screenplay by Michelangelo Antonioni, Elio Bartolini and Ennio De Concini, the film stars Steve Cochran, Alida Valli, Betsy Blair, and Dorian Gray.

Andrew Abraham’s documentary “Dog War” will make North American Premiere at Chelsea Film Festival October 19

dog-warThe film is Andrew Abraham’s “on the front lines” documentary about two ex-military men on a mission to save dogs from hidden meat farms in South Korea.

Dog War follows a duo of war-hardened, canine-loving combat veterans fighting to stop the dog meat trade in South Korea. Surveilling and infiltrating hidden meat farms and markets, they risk it all to save as many dogs as possible.

At the same time, the film spotlights a country at war with itself over the issue, igniting questions about cultural difference, and social and generational change. Dog War probes these questions without simple black and white answers—about animal rights vs. human livelihood, heroism vs. vigilantism, respect for another culture, and how far we can justly go to save man’s best friend.

Prime Video Releases “Brothers” Trailer and Poster with Josh Brolin, Peter Dinklage

In the film, a reformed criminal’s attempt at going straight is derailed when he reunites with his sanity-testing twin brother on a road trip for the score of a lifetime. Dodging bullets, the law, and an overbearing mother along the way, they must heal their severed family bond before they end up killing each other.

The all-star casts also includes Glenn Close, Marisa Tomei, Brendan Fraser, Taylour Paige, M. Emmet Walsh, Jennifer Landon, Joshua Mikel, William Tokarsky.

The screenplay for the film is by Macon Blair from the story by Etan Cohen.

“Brothers” opens in select theaters on October 10, followed by global premiere on Prime Video on October 17, 2024.

LAIKA Brings CORALINE Back For Limited HALLOWEEN Engagement

CoralineAfter a summertime return to theaters that grossed over $53M in global box office, LAIKA’s acclaimed 2009 stop-motion animated film Coraline is set to return to theaters for a special Halloween engagement starting on October 31st.

In addition to the U.S., the Halloween engagement of Coraline includes the UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, Austria, and Ecuador with more territories to follow. France and Italy will also begin their Coraline 15th Anniversary engagements this November.

The 15th Anniversary theatrical re-release of Coraline this past August was an huge success, surpassing all estimates. Since its re-release on August 15th, Coraline has brought in over $53M* at the global box office.

The film has also surpassed its original 2009 box office throughout Latin America, including Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Bolivia.

The 25th Newport Beach Film Festival (NBFF) and NBFF Premiere Partner, Fashion Island will be honoring 3x Academy Award-nominated costume designer, Arianne Phillips with the esteemed Creative Visionary Award during Fashion Island’s 13th Annual StyleWeekOC on October 19. This accolade recognizes artists for exceptional creative leadership and impact within their field. The award will be presented by actress Aubrey Plaza (“Megalopolis,” “The White Lotus”) followed by a panel moderated by Costume Designer Guild’s communications director Anna Wyckoff, where they will explore Arianne’s unique perspectives on the intersection of fashion and film.

“I’m so thankful to the Newport Beach Film Festival and Fashion Island for this wonderful honor and for acknowledging the art of costume design and our contribution to filmmaking. I am especially grateful to be recognized for my work this year on “Joker: Folie á Deux” and “A Complete Unknown.” I’m humbled to be included alongside such exciting talent at the festival this year,” said Arianne.

On October 28, Arianne will be attending the SCAD Savannah Film Festival where she will join Variety Artisans Editor, Jazz Tangcay for the festival’s annual “Behind Her Lens” panel along with a conversation following a screening of Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux on October 29.

On November 1, Arianne is set to receive the Precious Gem Award at Miami Dade College’s Miami Film Festival GEMS. The Precious Gem Award is the festival’s signature award, reserved for one-of-a-kind artists whose contributions to cinema are lasting and unforgettable.

“Lets Get Lost” (1988), Bruce Weber’s Academy Award-nominated documentary portrait of the elusive jazz icon Chet Baker, will run at Film Forum in a new 4K restoration from Friday, November 1 through Thursday, November 7.

A James Dean look alike pretty boy whose jazz trumpeting and melancholy epitomized 50s cool, Chet Baker had become, when famed photographer Bruce Weber finally caught up with him after three decades of fandom, an alcoholic and a junkie, whose petulantly angelic looks peeping out from behind a gaunt, valleyed and crevassed face could have starred for Sam Peckinpah.

Two visually stunning and musically moving hours with the iconic jazz trumpeter in the most romantically erotic jazz documentary ever made, shot by D.P. Jeff Preiss in stark, brooding film noir black & white.

Shifting back and forth from past to present, from Baker’s breakout performance and his controversial “doomed youth” years, to his poignant late-career decline and struggles with addiction, LET’S GET LOST forms a dreamy, improvisational quality offering a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the decadent life of jazz music’s original bad-boy.

“Disclaimer”: New Apple TV Plus Thriller Gets An Official Trailer

disclaimerPremiering globally October 11 on Apple TV+, “Disclaimer” stars Academy Award winners Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline. It is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Renée Knight.

“As Catherine races to uncover the writer’s true identity, she is forced to confront her past before it destroys both her own life and her relationships with her husband Robert (Sacha Baron Cohen) and their son Nicholas (Kodi Smit-McPhee),” says the synopsis.

The seven-episode psychological thriller stars Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline, with Alfonso Cuarón serving as writer and director. Sacha Baron Cohen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Lesley Manville, Louis Partridge, Leila George, Hoyeon, Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, Indira Varma also stars.

It is set to debut on Oct.11, Friday, on October 11 streamer with the first two episodes, followed by new episodes every Friday.

“Ballerina”: Action-Packed Trailer for John Wick Spin-Off Released

ballerina-movieThe world of John Wick expands with “Ballerina”, with Ana de Armas starring as an assassin, in the upcoming film which occurs on the same events as 2019’s “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.”

Ana de Armas plays Eve “Rooney” Macarro, a ballerina who is beginning to train in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma.

Lionsgate has officially dropped the action-packed first trailer.

Directed by Len Wiseman, the film also stars Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, the late Lance Reddick, David Castaneda, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Norman Reedus, Ian McShane, and Keanu Reeves.

Originally slated for this past June, “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina” is set for release on June 6th 2025.
