Why the Canon EOS R6 is shaping up to be a more exciting camera than the EOS R5

In sport, it’s nearly always an advantage to have been your family’s second-born – and so it appears to be with the Canon EOS R6, which is due to follow its elder Canon EOS R5 sibling at a launch event in July.

The full-frame mirrorless camera hasn’t actually been confirmed by Canon, but some apparently leaked specs seem to show that, just like Serena Williams and Andy Murray, the EOS R6 might just be more exciting (and, ultimately, successful) than its nearest sibling.

Of course, it’s a little early to be making definitive conclusions about the EOS R6. And it’s not as if the camera is going to be objectively ‘better’ than the EOS R5 – the latter will be Canon’s full-frame mirrorless flagship, after all, and has rightly attracted all the headlines for confirmed specs like 8K video capture and in-body image stabilization (IBIS).

Kendrick Lamar was the big winner at 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, winning 6 including top prize video of the year for “HUMBLE.” Lamar also won awards for best hip hop video, best direction, best cinematography, best art direction, best visual effects. Lamar also kicked off the three-hour show with a spectacular and powerful performance of “Humble” and “DNA” backed by break-dancing ninjas on fire.

But it was Ed Sheeran who beat out Lamar for Artist of the Year, VMA’s new gender neutral award established by MTV to eliminated gender categories. “Thank you to all the fans. Thank you to my record label. Jason Koenig, who made my videos on this album. Yeah, cheers!” Sheeran said. The star also performed his massive hit, “Shape of You” and was later joined by rapper Lil Uzi Vert.

Other big winners include Lil Uzi Vert’s “XO Tour Llif3” as Song of Summer, Khalid for Best New Artist, and Fifth Harmony ft. Gucci Mane for “Down”.

Taylor Swift also won for her collaboration video with Zayn, “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever”. The song was recorded for the soundtrack to the 2017 film Fifty Shades Darker. Though she was a no-show during the night, Swift debuted the controversial video for her newest single “Look What You Made Me Do.”

In between the fun performances and lighthearted speeches, the night also had a few strong messaging about social issues: Jared Leto delivered an emotional tribute to Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell, both of whom committed suicide this year, and Logic performed “1-800-273-8255” accompanied by Alessia Cara and Khalid promoting suicide prevention (the song is named after the National Suicide Hotline).

P!nk also took to the stage to perform a career spanning medley of “Get The Party Started,” “Raise Your Glass,” “So What,” among others, as well as her latest single “What About Us.” Shortly after, Ellen DeGeneres appeared onstage to present the singer with the Video Vanguard award.

In one of the night’s most moving moment, P!nk told a heartfelt story about her daughter Willow who was in the crowd, and gave a speech about body image and acceptance. “We don’t change. We take the gravel and the shell and we make a pearl,” P!nk declared to cheers. “And we help other people to change so they can see more kinds of beauty.”

2017 Video Music Awards was hosted by Katty Perry, marking the first time for Perry as host of the event.

The Cameras and Settings That Captured This Year’s Best Photos

Jamie Condliffe

Every year, Reuters publishes a list of its best photography, and you’ll recognise plenty of the 95 iconic images that capture this year’s biggest news stories. One keen Redditor, though, wanted to know more—so analyzed the EXIF data of all the images to find out how they were captured.

The result, put together by hallbuzz, is a sorted pool of data which reveals which cameras, lenses, and settings were used by the Reuters photographers to snap the best images of the year. Fortunately Peta Pixel points out that another user, mathiasa, took the data and turned it into a bunch of charts. Let’s take a look.

All of which suggests that the most likely kit choice for a photograph that made the list would be a Canon 1D Mark IV with a 16-35mm lens attached, using settings of 1/320 shutter speed, f/2.8, and ISO 200.

Sony Unleashes a Number of RX1 Photos Showing the Power of Full Frame

Michael Zhang

Sony made huge ripples in the camera industry earlier this month by announcing a compact camera with a full frame sensor: the RX1. The camera features a bokehlicious 35mm f/2 Carl Zeiss lens, a super compact size, and a price tag of $2,800 that broke many a photographer’s heart.

For those of you who are wondering how the fusion of compact and full frame performs, Sony has uploaded a number of full-resolution sample photographs. Pixel-peepers, prepare to gawk in amazement at the quality that’s now possible with fixed lens compact cameras. See here >>

Sony’s Cyber-shot RX1 compact camera packs a full-frame sensor, ‘fits in your palm’ (hands-on)

By Joe Pollicino

Would you believe us if we told you Sony packed a full-frame sensor in a Cyber-shot-branded camera? It’s true! Say hello to the RX1, a “compact” digital camera for pros that’s packing the same 24.3MP Exmor CMOS sensor introduced today with the A99.

Calling the rangefinder-esque one-pound shooter small might seem off-base, especially considering the Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 35mm f/2.0 fixed prime lens protruding from its front, but it’s not so huge (3-inches high by 4.5-inches wide) up against its tiny sibling, the RX100 — taking into account how much larger the RX1’s sensor is, well, that’s when this editor’s jaw basically dropped. While it’s not a “pro-NEX” as many had hoped, Sony explained that it chose a fixed lens to avoid the bulk of a lens-mount. We were able to get some eyes-on time with an engineering prototype of the unit, so click past the break for more details, close-ups and a brief video overview.
