Art House Cinema Week Kicks Off Across New York City

The citywide initiative, backed by the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and Art House New York, brings together nearly 30 independent theaters for a week of special programming, discounted tickets, and community-focused screenings.

The event also includes 5,000 free tickets funded by the city, aimed at making art house cinema more accessible. Additional perks include discounted memberships and concessions, with select groups—such as students, teachers, veterans, and SNAP/EBT cardholders—eligible for free admission at participating locations.

Designed to encourage audiences to reconnect with local theaters, the week highlights the role of independent cinemas as cultural and community hubs across the city.

The comedy-drama Holy Days, starring Judy Davis, Miriam Margolyes, and Jacki Weaver, is set for a North American theatrical release on March 27, 2026.

Directed by Nat Boltt in her feature debut, the film follows three unconventional nuns on a road trip across New Zealand as they fight for their independence. Along the way, they form an unexpected bond with a young Māori boy, leading to a journey shaped by friendship, faith, and self-discovery.

The film premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and will also feature special event screenings, including appearances by Boltt.

After a strong start in practice, a mechanical failure pushes him to the back of the grid, turning his race into a relentless fight to climb back through the field.

Directed by Salomão and André Abdala, 2DIE4 focuses on the mental and physical demands of racing, capturing the pressure, precision, and risk that define the sport at its highest level.

Film Forum will celebrate legendary filmmaker Ernst Lubitsch with a special 13-film retrospective titled The Lubitsch Touch, beginning Tuesday, April 7 in New York.

The series will feature weekly screenings of some of Lubitsch’s most influential films, including Ninotchka, The Shop Around the Corner, Trouble in Paradise, Heaven Can Wait, Design for Living, Cluny Brown, and To Be or Not to Be, among others.

Known for his sophisticated humor and subtle visual storytelling, Lubitsch helped shape the modern romantic comedy and movie musical after moving from Germany to Hollywood in the early 20th century. His distinctive style became widely known as “The Lubitsch Touch.”

The series will run Tuesday evenings with select additional screenings, highlighting Lubitsch’s enduring influence on classic Hollywood cinema.

Daughters-of-the-ForestThe trailer has been released for Daughters of the Forest (Hijas del bosque), a sci-fi documentary directed by Otilia Portillo Padua, ahead of its North American premiere at SXSW.

The film will first world premiere at CPH:DOX in Copenhagen before screening in the Visions section at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin.

Daughters of the Forest follows Lis and Juli, two Indigenous mycologists from communities in Mexico who study the complex relationship between humans and fungi. As they share their scientific knowledge and ancestral traditions, the film explores how environmental change, deforestation, and limited opportunities threaten both ecosystems and cultural knowledge.

Blending documentary storytelling with speculative elements, the film looks at how mushrooms and mycelial networks can offer new ways of thinking about coexistence and the future.

Berlin Silver Bear Winner Living the Land Opens at Film Forum April 3

Directed by Huo Meng, the film earned the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival and marks the filmmaker’s second feature. The coming-of-age story unfolds in rural China during the early 1990s, a period of rapid industrial change.

The film follows Chuang, a sensitive 10-year-old boy whose parents leave their wheat-farming village to seek work in the city. Left in the care of his extended family, Chuang witnesses the rhythms of rural life through the guidance of his outspoken great-grandmother and independent-minded aunt.

Told from the child’s perspective, Living the Land captures a community at the edge of transformation as traditional village life begins to disappear.

Following its Berlin premiere, the film has also screened at international festivals including Vancouver, Valladolid, and the International Film Festival of India. The film is distributed in the United States by Film Movement.

The first teaser has arrived for Jane Schoenbrun’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, opening in U.S. theaters August 7.

Written and directed by Schoenbrun (I Saw the TV Glow, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair), the film stars Hannah Einbinder (Hacks) and Gillian Anderson (The X-Files, Sex Education). The supporting cast includes Amanda Fix, Eva Victor, Zach Cherry, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Quintessa Swindell, and more.

The story centers on a struggling slasher franchise handed to an ambitious young director for revival. When she seeks out the reclusive star of the original film, the two are pulled into a surreal, blood-soaked spiral of obsession, desire, and horror.

Produced by Plan B and financed by MUBI, the film will be distributed in multiple territories including North America, the U.K., Germany, Australia, and beyond.

Kiki’s Delivery Service Returns to Theaters in 4K IMAX Release

Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the 1989 coming-of-age fantasy will mark its first-ever release on IMAX screens in the U.S. and Canada. The engagement continues GKIDS’ partnership with IMAX to bring remastered Studio Ghibli titles back to theaters.

Audiences will have the option to watch the film in its original Japanese with subtitles or the English-language dubbed version.

Kiki’s Delivery Service follows a young witch-in-training who leaves home to find her place in the world, accompanied by her black cat, Jiji. The English dub features the voices of Kirsten Dunst, Janeane Garofalo, Phil Hartman, and Debbie Reynolds. Tickets are now on sale.

Radu Jude’s Kontinental ‘25 Opens March 27 at Film Forum

The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival, where Jude won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay.

Set in the Romanian city of Cluj, the story follows Orsolya, a Hungarian immigrant and municipal employee whose routine eviction of an elderly man sets off a personal reckoning after he takes his own life. As she revisits the event through conversations with friends, family, and clergy, the film examines questions of responsibility, guilt, and the systems that shape individual choices.

Jude, known for Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn and Don’t Expect Too Much From the End of the World, continues his sharp, often uncomfortable look at contemporary European life.

Kontinental ‘25 begins its U.S. theatrical run at Film Forum on March 27.

Residente to Make Directorial Debut With ‘Porto Rico,’ Starring Bad Bunny, Viggo Mortensen, Edward Norton and Javier Bardem

porto-ricoRené Pérez Joglar, known globally as Residente, is stepping behind the camera for his first feature film.

Titled Porto Rico, the historical drama will star Benito Martínez Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny, in his first leading film role. The cast also includes Viggo Mortensen, Edward Norton, and Javier Bardem.

The film is described as an epic Caribbean western inspired by Puerto Rico’s early history. Pérez Joglar co-wrote the screenplay with Academy Award winner Alexander Dinelaris. Production companies attached include Live Nation Studios and Class 5 Films, with sales being handled by UTA Independent Film Group.

Residente, a 34-time Grammy and Latin Grammy winner, has previously worked as an actor and director in music and documentary projects. Porto Rico marks his first narrative feature as director.

Additional casting and release details have not yet been announced.
