“Cosplay Universe,” a documentary that explores the evolution and rise of the global phenomenon known as Cosplay, the art of dressing up as a character you love, premiered this past weekend on July 3rd at Anime Expo, and will be followed by a global theatrical release this summer via distributor Abramorama. Featuring the international stories of Yaya Han, Kamui Cosplay, Shema and Juan of Mexican Cosplay Team TWIIN Cosplay, World Cosplay Summit Organizer and academic Ed Hoff, Lauren of Castle Corsetry, Cynthia Tyler, Thomas De Petrillo and Qi Ma. The film is also highlighted by one of the last interviews with legendary comic book figure Stan Lee. Cosplay Universe is the most comprehensive exploration of the cosplay world to date.

Cosplay Universe celebrates the rise of the popular costuming sub-culture and explores the origin and evolution of cosplay as an art form and global community. Directed by Jonathan McHugh and Jordan Rennert, the film was shot over six years – pre-pandemic – at conventions around the U.S. including Anime Expo, San Diego’s Comic-Con International, Atlanta’s Dragon Con, Stan Lee’s last L.A. Comic Con and the World Cosplay Summit in Nagoya, Japan.

Knights and Zombies Clash In “Dead Kingdom”

Red 5 Comics prepares to re-enter the world of the undead in Etienne Derepentigny’s debut series Dead Kingdom out just in time for Halloween.

“We obviously love zombie stories,” Red 5 Comics co-publisher Joshua Starnes said. From ZMD to Dead or Alive to Raise Up the Dead, zombies have been part of the Red 5 DNA since the beginning. Every time I hear a pitch for a new way to tell a great zombie story, I get excited.”

Something is attacking the Field Valley, something that destroys whole villages seemingly overnight. The kingdom thinks it’s plague but the battleworn Kain knows better. When he and a small group of knights go to investigate all of his worst dears are proven true as the dead attack the village. And if they can’t be stopped, they’ll eventually overrun the entire kingdom.

“Dead Kingdom is the result of my love for the zombie genre that has entertained me since my childhood,” said creator Etienne Derepentigny. “A story many years in the marking, now is the time for it to step out of the shadow so it can be unleashed upon the living.”

The dead arrive this September in Dead Kingdom from Red 5 Comics.

Werewolf by Night attacks in October’s Moon Knight Annual #1 by Jed MacKay and Federico Sabbatini

Amazon Studios Acquires Rights To Charles Soule & Ryan Brown’s Comic Book Series “Eight Billion Genies” After A Heated Auction

Last week, Hollywood Reporter announced that Amazon Studios has acquired the development rights to Charles Soule and Ryan Browne’s bestselling comic book series, Eight Billion Genies, after a heated auction.

The first project coming out of the deal is a feature film, which will be executive produced by Soule and Browne and serve as the cornerstone in a cross-media Universe of storytelling.

Charles Soule and Ryan Browne are represented by Angela Cheng Caplan of Cheng Caplan Company and Eric Feig of Feig Law.

Today Legion M and Exhibit A Pictures are announcing a new documentary directed by Alexandre O. Philippe, in which William Shatner takes off the countless masks he’s worn throughout his storied career, to reveal the man behind one of the most recognizable faces in the world.

Hemingway in Comics Coming to San Diego Comic-Con Next Month

Writer Ernest Hemingway casts a long shadow in literature that extends into comic books, where he has appeared alongside Superman, Mickey Mouse and Captain Marvel—he even fought fascists with Wolverine.

Hemingway in Comics, the book and the exhibit at the Comic-Con Museum, explore what it means to be a pop culture icon, and how that image can change over time. Hemingway in Comics celebrates more than 120 of these comics from 18 countries, from the U.S. and Mexico to the Netherlands and Latvia. Artists featured in the show include Chris Ware, Colleen Doran, Cliff Chiang, Steve Rolston, Ryan Inzana, Gabo, Norwegian artist Jason and many others.

The Comic-Con Museum will host a preview of the show in its theater lobby during the July convention, then host the full 60+ artifact exhibition from August to December 2022.

Interviews with author/curator Robert K. Elder are available in advance, as well as with a few select creators featured in the book.

During the convention, a panel will discuss the show on Saturday (11:30 AM -12:30 PM). Panelists include Robert K. Elder (Hemingway in Comics) Elliot S! After thirty years, Gaiman and Buckingham complete their Miracleman saga this October in Miracleman By Gaiman & Buckingham: The Silver Age. Just in time for the 40th anniversary of Miracleman’s modern era, Marvel Comics has announced that Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham’s groundbreaking Miracleman: The Silver Age Saga will return this October.

The two visionary comic talents will complete their unfinished Miracleman storyline “The Silver Age,” including remastered editions of the first two published issues, complete with new artwork and bonus material. The series will follow the previously announced Miracleman By Gaiman & Buckingham: The Silver Age Book 1: The Golden Age TPB, the new collection containing Gaiman and Buckingham’s first Miracleman series. Prime Video Is Bringing “The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power” To Comic-Con

Prime Video confirmed today that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series will be coming to Comic-Con International: San Diego this July. Creators and stars of the much-anticipated new series will take to the coveted Hall H stage for the very first time, inviting fans of the much beloved franchise to experience Middle-earth as they never have before.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power panel will introduce the international team of actors bringing the show’s roster of new and legendary characters of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age to life.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is led by showrunners and executive producers J.D. Lady Gaga In Talks To Join Todd Phillips’ Joker Sequel

The sequel to 2019’s Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux will reportedly be a musical which will likely star the original film’s lead Joaquin Phoenix, and Lady Gaga is set to join him, according to THR.

Per story, Gaga would play DC’s Harley Quinn but a different incarnation than that played by Margot Robbie’s version from current DC Universe. And it will also be a musical.

Phillips and Gaga have worked together before in 2018’s A Star is Born, which starred Gaga along with Bradley Cooper, and which Philips served as a producer.

The original 2019 blockbuster was a huge hit for Phillips. That film grossed $1 billion at the boxoffice worldwide, received 12 nominations at the Oscars, one of which won by Phoenix for playing the iconic lead anti-hero.

More recently, Harley Quinn has been played by Margot Robbie three times, in 2016’s “Suicide Squad,” 2020’s “Birds of Prey” and 2021’s “The Suicide Squad.

“Fortnite X Marvel: Zero War” Finale Cover Released

Last week, Marvel and Fortnite fans finally got to see the collision of both universes in the debut issue of the “Fortnite X Marvel: Zero War” mini-series.

Written by veteran Marvel writer Christos Gage and Epic Games’ Chief Creative Officer Donald Mustard and drawn by artist Sergio Davíla, the five-issue epic stars Fortnite’s heroes as they team up with Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, Shuri, and more. Fans can get an early glimpse of the Zero War’s final showdown on the cover of “Fortnite X Marvel: Zero War”.

“There’ll be a few things you see in both the game and the comic—mostly in our final issue,” Gage told IGN in a recent interview. “But for the most part, what happens in the game and what happens in the comic are different fronts in the same war. Some questions that players might have about the game are answered in the comic, and vice versa, though neither are required to follow the story in the other.”
