Lost Stanley Kubrick Script Discovered

By Creative Media Times

1968 epic sci-fi 2001: A Space Odyssey. MGM

A once lost screenplay written by filmmaker Stanley Kubrick has been found after more than 60 years, The Guardian is reporting.

According to report, the screenplay titled “Burning Secret,” was written by the legendary filmmaker with American novelist and screenwriter Calder Willingham, who had also has screenplay credits with another Kubrick classic “Paths of Glory.”

“I couldn’t believe it. It’s so exciting. It was believed to have been lost,” says Nathan Abrams, a film professor and Kubrick scholar who found the screenplay. “Kubrick aficionados know he wanted to do it, [but] no one ever thought it was completed. We now have a copy and this proves that he had done a full screenplay.”

Based on Stefan Zweig’s 1913 novel, “Burning Secret” follows a lecherous man who befriends a young boy in order to secure his married mother at a spa resort.

The influential and controversial filmmaker is responsible for a broad range of classics including “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968), “A Clockwork Orange” (1971), Barry Lyndon (1975), “The Shining” (1980) and Full Metal Jacket (1987).

Kubrick died in 1999 at the age of 70, shortly after completing his last film “Eyes Wide Shut,” the controversial erotic drama starring then husband and wife Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.

New Trailer for “Mary Queen of Scots” Released

By Creative Media Times

Focus Features

Saoirse Ronan is Mary and Margot Robbie is Elizabeth and they are rivals in power in this December’s “Mary Queen of Scots.” Today, Focus Features has released a brand new trailer, giving us a first look at what the film has in store.

The 16th century historical drama is directed by Josie Rourke and written by Beau Willimon, and is based on “My Heart Is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots” by British historian and biographer John Guy.

Along with some beautiful cinematography and sweeping vistas of England and Scotland, the trailer shows plenty of confrontations between the two rivals, try as they may to say otherwise.

“My dear Queen Elizabeth, I hope we might meet in person so that I may embrace you,” Mary says in the trailer. “But ruling side by side, we must do so in harmony, not through a treaty drafted by men lesser than ourselves.” To which Robbie’s Queen Elizabeth I replies: “My dear cousin, let our nations cherish each other as we would. Two kingdoms unite.”

Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie were both academy award nominees earlier this year: Ronan for the coming-of-age film “Lady Bird” and Robbie as disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.”

The movie also stars Brendan Coyle, David Tennant, Joe Alwyn, Guy Pearce and Martin Compston. Mary, Queen of Scots is set to hit theaters on Dec. 7.

Here is the film’s official synopsis:

“Mary Queen of Scots” explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart (Ronan). Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I (Robbie). Each young Queen beholds her “sister” in fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones – and change the course of history.

Fresh off the massive success of this year’s “Black Panther,” all eyes are on it’s star Chadwick Boseman and what his next film will be. And now that question is finally answered.

STX films has announced today that the actor is set to star in the studio’s upcoming action-thriller “17 Bridges”. The film will feature Boseman as a disgraced NYPD detective who, after being thrust into a citywide manhunt for a cop killer, is given a shot at redemption.

Boseman will also produce the film with his writing and producing partner, Logan Coles along with “Avengers: Infinity War” directors Joe and Anthony Russo under their recently launched Agbo banner. Mike Larocca of Agbo will executive produce. Brian Kirk (The Tudors, Game of Thrones) is directing from a script by Adam Mervis.

“STX has assembled a dream team of collaborators on 17 BRIDGES, bringing together the global talents behind two of the biggest action films ever made to give audiences a thrilling new take on the race against the clock crime-drama,” said Adam Fogelson, Chairman of STXfilms. “Chadwick Boseman’s razor-sharp instincts and undeniable charisma captivated millions of people around the world in Black Panther, and Joe and Anthony Russo have breathed a new energy into the action genre with films like Avengers: Infinity War. Their unique and intelligent approach to filmmaking is anything but formulaic, and with Brian Kirk at the helm directing, this film promises to go beyond the typical popcorn fare.”

Black Panther was released earlier this year and has so far grossed more than $1.3 billion at the global box office, almost $700 million of which it made domestically, where it is now the third highest grossing film of all time.

Its Official: Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘Joker’ Is Happening

By Creative Media Times

Joaquin Phoenix will be playing the iconic character for Warner Bros. origin film, Variety is reporting.

The “Walk the Line” actor finalized the deal recently with shooting set in September of this year. Todd Phillips of “The Hangover” films is said to be directing and co-writing the script.

Phoenix has been nominated for an Academy Award three times, twice as lead actor for The Master (2012) and Walk The Line (2005), and once as supporting actor for his role as Commodus in 2000’s best picture winning film Gladiator.

Some might wonder about Jared Leto, who recently played the role in 2016’s DC Comics antihero ensemble film Suicide Squad. Well, that is apparently also moving forward. A month ago, Variety also reported that his own stand-alone film based on his version of the character from Suicide Squad is in development.

How the two films will co-exist in some form remains to be seen, though Phoenix’s Joker film, said to be a more “gritty crime drama,” could potentially kick-start a new cinematic universe that is different from its current DC Extended Universe.

Warner Bros. has a slate of upcoming films based on the DC Comics including James Wan-directed Aquaman later this year.

“Elizabeth Harvest” To Open In LA And NY In August

By Creative Media Times

IFC Films

Starring Abbey Lee, Carla Gugino, Ciaran Hinds, Matthew Beard, Dylan Baker, IFC Films is set to open this summer on August 10 in New York and Los Angeles.

Variety’s Joe Leydon describes writer-director Sebastian Gutierrez’s effort “a clever “Bluebeard” update in this idiosyncratic gothic sci-fi melodrama” after its play last March at SXSW.

The film is described as a “a modern-day riff on the French folktale of Bluebeard (in which a violent nobleman in the habit of murdering his wives is confronted by a new wife trying to avoid the fate of her predecessors) ELIZABETH HARVEST is a science fiction thriller told from a young woman’s point of view, acting as both fairytale gone wrong and parable about female empowerment.”

Here’s the synopsis for “Elizabeth Harvest”:

Newlywed Elizabeth (Abbey Lee) arrives with her brilliant scientist husband Henry (Ciaran Hinds) to his magnificent estate, where he wows her with lavish dinners and a dazzling tour of the property. The house staff, Claire (Carla Gugino) and Oliver (Matthew Beard), treats her deferentially but she can’t shake the feeling something is off. Henry explains that everything in his world now belongs to her, all is for her to play in — all except for a locked-off room he forbids her from entering. When he goes away for business Elizabeth decides to investigate and finds she may not be who she thinks she is at all.
