Album Review: Paloma Faith: The Architect

By Niy Birden

RCA – Epic

Let it be known: Paloma Faith is ready to make her mark as an R&B popstar. Maybe not quite like Bruno Mars aesthetically, but with the same musical foundation and performance attitude.

And this time, it is imperative for our best interests that we pay complete attention.

With 4 albums in the game and more than 20 years as a performer, it is really quite a surprise that she hasn’t gotten up to the ranks such as her other fellow female British performers, like Adele and other singer songwriters. Even though her sound and imagery were quite literally similar to a circus act (which makes sense considering that she was a magician’s assistant), she had the full package: chops, dance skills, and the looks. But somehow, she was heavily overlooked.

Not anymore.

Debuting at number one on the UK Albums Chart and selling over 40,000 copies, this is her first UK charting album.

The Architect, Paloma’s newest album, is a statement that is finding a unique spot amongst the 2017 album releases in the mainstream R&B and pop world.

It is a joyful surprise in many ways. With the album title being released in 2016 after a statement about her hiatus following her childbirth, many people did not expect to hear from our friendly singer from across the pond for quite some time.

Listen to Ed Sherran’s “Perfect” Orchestra Version With Andrea Bocelli

By Creative Media Times

Asylum – Atlantic

Who would have thought Ed Sheeran singing parts of his song “Perfect” in Italian would be quite, well, perfect.

The new version of the song, which also features Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, is the second iteration of the track after a duet version featuring Beyoncé, titled “Perfect Duet” was released earlier this month. That version pushed “Perfect” to the top of the Billboard hot 100 charts.

Before the track was released, the 26 year old English singer teased about his collaboration with Bocelli on Instagram. “Orchestral version of Perfect with the amazing @andreabocelliofficial comes out friday. Orchestrated and produced by my super talented brother Matt, little gift for you all before Christmas,” Sheeran posted on Instagram. “Hope you love it as much as I do. I sing in Italian too which is fun x.”

The romantic ballad is from Sheeran’s third studio album, ÷ (divide) which dominated the charts this year, along with its chart-topping single Shape of You. 2017 is a big year for Sheeran as he is poised to become Billboard’s top artist of the year on its year-end charts, becoming only the second British solo act since George Michael dominated in 1998.

Bon Jovi, The Cars, Dire Straits Among Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2018 Inductees

By Armando

Mercury – Vertigo

Bon Jovi will certainly have a nice day today as the veteran rockers earned a spot for induction into the 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Jersey band that rose to prominence in the 1980s will be inducted alongside British rock bands Dire Straits and The Moody Blues, new wave rockers The Cars, social activist Nina Simone and rock and roll pioneer Sister Rosetta Tharpe who will be given an Early Influence award posthumously.

Meanwhile, third time’s definitely a charm for three-time nominee The Cars. The popular band from Boston have appeared on the ballot twice before but failed to get inducted. This is the second nomination for Bon Jovi, while first for Simone, Tharpe, Dire Straits and The Moody Blues.

Guitarist Richie Sambora has not played with Bon Jovi since 2013, and the induction could possibly see a band reunion. The Cars are still intact as a band, though they have not been active since their tour ended in 2011. Dire Straights officially broke up in September 1988, though some of the band’s members Alan Clark, Chris White, and Phil Palmer performed at a charity show in 2011 with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ drummer Steve Ferrone.

Today’s announcement of the class of 2018 inductees certainly looks favorable towards vintage rock artists with more recent acts such as Rage Against The Machine missing the cut. Radiohead, whom many thought was a shoo-in in their first year of eligibility also missed the cut, though their recent statements about not wanting to attend the ceremonies if inducted probably didn’t help.

Throughout the past, inductees include some of the most influential names in rock history, such as Chuck Berry, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Jackson 5. Last year, Electric Light Orchestra, Joan Baez, Journey, Pearl Jam, Tupak Shakur, and Yes comprised the 2017 Hall of Fame class.

The artists will be honored during the Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at Cleveland’s Public Auditorium on Saturday, April 14 and will be aired on HBO and SiriusXM.

Finding A Space: Interview with Composer Nathan Whitehead

By Niy Birden

Composer Nathan Whitehead

What do you expect from the composer of Keanu, the hilarious animal-friendly film starring two of the most recent breakthrough comedians of the era, Key and Peele? Would you expect the same things from the composer of The Purge series, which recently made waves not only for its inhumane storyline, but currently rather the political messages in it- or even the person who also did work for Desperate Housewives?

Nathan Whitehead happily lives in a contradiction of music creation. While he mentions that he does have more of a comfortability for horror films, his intention to consistently learn and adapt to new genres is what has helped his sounds thrive in various forms of media, whether it be video games, major films or even reality television.

In the sequel to the blockbuster hit Beyond Skyline, Nathan has found a way to cleverly create a space of unique (and we do mean incredibly unique) soundscapes fit for action movies, without the assistance of big budgets, but rather with the help of an elk bugle, of all things. Tiny breakthroughs like this show the real tenacity of a musician, whether they are in control of the music or not. Looks like the guy who had an identity crisis in his pop punk band has truly made a lane for himself.

Q: How did you get interested in film music, and who inspired you?

N: I got interested in film music I think in just always being a big movie fan and I started experimenting with music at an early age. Just playing the family piano. And that led to guitar. So I played guitar for years and wrote songs, got interested in punk rock and played in a pop punk band, but all of this time I think, the idea of just creating my own music-writing music rather than learning covers off songs, was much more appealing to write stuff. And it probably set me back in a way because as soon as I learned three chords on a guitar, I started writing music instead. I would rather write material with those 3 chords than practice some new chords.

Vertical Entertainment

It was through the punk band that I got introduced to working in a recording studio. We recorded like a 6 song ep- I was fresh out of high school actually, and shortly after that it sort of clicked that if I wrote music for movies or tv shows, or anything like that I -would get to be in my studio all the time. I really loved the studio process and I really loved writing.

And another thing that always popped up when I was in the band was sort of this identity crisis, like what is this band gonna be and what are we feeling? For whatever reason I felt like I had to figure out what the band was, which I don’t think was really important, but you know.

Q: Did that cause a lot of problems for you and the band members, or do you think that it made you guys stronger in a sense and more connected?

N: I wouldn’t say it caused problems, sometimes it caused mild disagreements, mostly it just made our songs all over the place style-wise [laughs], but that was that- it clicked- writing music for film, I could write in tons of genres. Maybe whatever the film needs. That’s easier said than done. You never know what opportunity you’re gonna get. I’ve done a lot of horror music, Beyond Skyline is this big action score. I’ve done big-band music . And back in my assistant days I wrote on Desperate Housewives for 2 and a half years.

Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé Collaborate On “Perfect Duet”

By Creative Media Times

A few weeks ago, Ed Sheeran teased that a remix of his latest single “Perfect” will soon be released. Its “a pretty big f***in deal,” says Sheeran. “I’m just basically gonna ‘Despacito’ ‘Perfect.'”

Today Sheeran reveals that the remix is in fact a duet with Beyoncé. Though the two have performed on stage before, this marks the first time the powerhouse musicians have collaborated on a single. The two performed on stage together during a tribute to Stevie Wonder in 2015.

The romantic ballad is from Sheeran’s recent album ÷ (Divide) which was nominated in the Grammy’s best pop vocal album category. The song’s original version is currently number five on Billboard Hot 100 and the duet version should definitely provide a boost to it’s chart performance.

In the romantic duet, Sheeran takes the lead verse and chorus which were essentially similar to the song’s original version, before Beyoncé comes in to sing the second verse, which then lead to harmonious blend of their vocals on the track’s last two choruses. The original do features more a orchestral sound than the acoustics on the duet.

The collab track is second for Sheeran this month, after his work with Taylor Swift on the latter’s latest “End Game”. Beyoncé recently collaborated with rapper Eminem on “Walk on Water” released last month, and with J Balvin and Willy William’s “Mi Gente” remix which was released in September.

The song was a massive this this summer, staying at Billboard’s Hot 100 number-one summit for 16 consecutive weeks, a record it tied with “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men.
