Samsung is going to launch the Galaxy Note 7 (hold the 6, please) on August 2

By Will Shanklin

As the rumor mill predicted, Samsung is officially set to announce its next Galaxy Note phablet early next month. Fans of stylus-laden smartphones can expect an upgraded version on August 2 in New York City.

The invite, sent out to members of the press today (including Gizmag), not only confirms the leaked date of the event; it also appears to confirm that the phone will be called the Galaxy Note 7. Last year’s model was the Galaxy Note 5, but based on that tiny “7” in the teaser image above (and also predicted by numerous leaks), it appears Samsung is taking a cue from Microsoft’s book: It jumped straight from Windows 8 to Windows 10 early last year.

New BTS Images From Suicide Squad Show Off The Props

By Josh Wilding

The marketing blitz for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad continues today via EW’s Instagram account, where photographer Clay Enos (who worked on Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and is also hard at work on Justice League), shared several photos from the set of the upcoming DC Comics adaptation. Unlike the stills EW released earlier this week, these ones feature a bunch of the film’s props, giving us some neat BTS shots in the process.

Seen in the gallery above, Enos’ photos show off Ayer immersing himself in the Joker’s massive collection of “toys,” Harley Quinn’s bats and a Joker playing card. Nothing too revealing, but we’ve already seen a hell of a lot from Suicide Squad and at this stage, I think Warner Bros. is better off holding back on new material. After all, we don’t want everything to be spoiled before we even walk into the theatre.

The Deer Hunter Writer-Director Michael Cimino Dies at 77

By Armando

Michael Cimino, who won Oscars for director and best picture for the seminal Vietnam War movie of the 1970s The Deer Hunter, has died. He was 77. He was found dead Saturday after friends called the police when they couldn’t reach him.

Thierry Fremaux, Cannes Film Festival director, tweeted the news Saturday that Cimino died in peace surrounded by those close to him and the two women who loved him. “We loved him too,” wrote Fremaux.

Cimino also directed ‘Thunderbolt & Lightfoot’ and the misunderstood epic and financial failure ‘Heaven’s Gate’. The latter incinerated the director’s career and changed the way movies are made towards more studio control of film production. Somehow with the passage of time, Heaven’s Gate is considered by many to be a masterpiece.

Michael Cimino was born in New York City on February 3, 1939. His father was a music publisher. He graduated from Westbury High School on Long Island in 1956. He later entered Michigan State University where majored in graphic arts. At the university, he became an art director and later managing editor of the school’s humor magazine Spartan. He was later accepted in Yale and also enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve.

In the early 70s, Cimino moved to Los Angeles to pursue a screenwriting career, subsequently getting representation from the prestigious Hollywood-based talent agency William Morris Agency. His Thunderbolt and Lightfoot script was bought by Clint Eastwood and allowed Cimino to direct with Eastwood himself as starring in the film. The film was a resounding boxoffice success and earned co-star Jeff Bridges an Academy Award Best Supporting Actor nomination.

Cimino went on to direct the The Deer Hunter (1978), considered by many to be one of the greatest films ever made. In 1996, The Deer Hunter was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

After the massive success of The Deer Hunter came the low-point of his career, Heaven’s Gate, a boxoffice and critical failure which put his career on a halt, and he never recovered since. The Heaven’s Gate debacle was chronicled in a 1999 book written by former UA executive Steven Bach, Final Cut: Art, Money, and Ego in the Making of Heaven’s Gate, the Film That Sank United Artists.

The high and low of Cimino’s career is so extreme that it has become a cautionary tale about the struggle between artists and executives in Hollywood.

Superman Is the Best Superhero of All Time, Study Says

By Adam Chitwood

It’s a debate as old as time itself—which superhero would beat all other superheroes in a fight? Everyone has their own answer (with caveats galore), but now we’ve got an objective, definitive answer to the question that has perplexed philosophers and scientists for decades.

Students at the University of Leicester (via Gizmodo) have unveiled the results of a seven-year study into the age-old superhero question, and the answer is clear: Superman is the best-equipped superhero of all time.

photo copyright: Warner Brothers. DC Comics

While Superman landing the title isn’t exactly a shock—he can do basically anything—the runners up may surprise you. Wolverine and Mystique both made solid cases, with Wolverine’s regenerative capacity cited as a major benefit, and Mystique’s mastery of manipulation to aid in disguise working in her favor. Thor also ranks considerably high thanks to the God of Thunder’s energy efficiency—1 throw of Mjolnir can have an energy output of 5.97×1018 J. Inhumans member Black Bolt, meanwhile, likely holds the title of the single most destructive superhero given the energy output that results in planetary annihilation.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to star in Shane Black’s Doc Savage movie

by Armando

It looks like Dwayne Johnson’s busy schedule will get even busier. The actor confirmed on Monday that he would be teaming with director Shane Black to bring the classic heroic-adventure character to life in a new film, which had been in development at Sony Pictures.

The actor relayed the information via his Instagram account post that shows Black and his co-writing team of Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry and producer Hiram Garcia.

Shane Black, recently helmed the The Nice Guys with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling to positive reviews and modest boxoffice since bowing on May 20. He also directed Iron Man 3 and wrote Lethal Weapon in the late 80s which kicked off the franchise for Warner Bros. He is also currently working on his new Predator film.

The superhero title is just the latest on Johnson’s busy slate. He is starring alongside Kevin Hart in action comedy Central Intelligence, set for a June 17 release.

Johnson will also produce the film under his Seven Bucks Productions banner with Sony releasing the movie. Production for the film has yet to begin.

It's OFFICIAL: For all comic book fans you already know the world's first superhero (pre-dating Superman) is the "Man of Bronze" himself Clark "Doc" Savage. Want to thank my bud director/writer Shane Black and his writing team Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry for flying in from LA and sitting with me and our @sevenbucksprod's producer @hhgarcia41 on this Memorial Day weekend to chop up creative and break story on this very cool project. Comic book fans around the world know that the cool thing about "Doc" Savage is that he's the inspiration for Superman. First name Clark, called "Man of Bronze", retreats to his "Fortress of Solitude" in the Arctic etc etc. Doc was physically and mentally trained from birth by his father and a team of scientists to become the perfect human specimen with a genius level intellect. His heightened senses are beyond comprehension. He can even identify a women's perfume from half a mile away. He is literally the master of everything. But here's the #1 reason I'm excited to become Doc Savage.. HE'S A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO! Confidently, yet innocently he has zero social graces whatsoever due to his upbringing so every interaction he has with someone is direct, odd, often uncomfortable and amazingly hilarious. After speaking for hours w/ Shane Black I can see why the creator of Superman took only the best parts of Doc Savage and leaving the "weirdo" part behind. But to us, it's that "weirdo" part that makes Clark "Doc" Savage dope! Can't wait to sink my teeth into this one of a kind character. #ItsOfficial #WorldsFirstSuperhero #GeniusIntellect #PhysicalSpecimen #FnLoveableWeirdo #ManOfBronze #DocSavage
