Best Buy Set To Pull CDs From Stores

By Creative Media Times

Its an end of an era. CDs, once the bread the butter of the music industry, is on their way out.

Best Buy, once the major music merchandiser in the US, will soon be pulling CDs from all of its stores by July 1, Billboard reports.

The article also claims that Target will follow suit if their consignment condition is not met. Specially, Target is only willing to pay labels for sold CDs. Currently, Target takes inventory risk by paying for goods shipped within 60 days, and ships back unsold CDs to the label for credit.

With strong performance of streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify continued unabated, dominating US music industry revenue last year for up to 62 percent of the total market, the news is both heartbreaking and unsurprising. There is also growing competition from smart speakers like Google Home, Sonos One, Amazon Echo which is changing the way people listen to music.

Last year, CD sales in the US were down 18.5 percent. while Best Buy, once the biggest seller of CD units in the US, now only sells $40 million annually. Overall CD sales dropped from its peak of 800 million in 2001 to 89 million in 2017, according to Consumer Affairs.

The good news: Best Buy looks to continue offering vinyl to customers, at least for the next two years. And for good reason. Vinyl seems to be making some sort of a comeback, with sales growth for the 12th consecutive year, or 14% of all physical album sales in 2017.

By Creative Media Times

Universal Pictures

Its been a good year for Dwayne Johnson so far with the surprise success of Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, topping the box-office for 5 non-consecutive weeks and a planned sequel moving forward.

The action hero will be back this summer with the action thriller “Skyscraper”, and its first full trailer was recently released by Universal after its Super Bowl spot on Sunday. It looks like an interesting take on Die Hard with Johnson playing a man with a prosthetic leg, running on cranes and leaping skyscrapers.

The film reunites Johnson with his “Central Intelligence” director Rawson Marshall Thurber who also wrote the film. Johnson plays Will Ford, a former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader, who now assesses security for skyscrapers after having a leg amputated.

“You’ve built the tallest, most advanced building in the world,” Johnson’s Ford tells the building’s owners. “But you’ve brought with it every single safety and security challenge that I can think of. Not only have you brought them all indoors, but you’ve trapped them 240 floors in the air.”

Skyscaper, which also stars Neve Campbell, Chin Han, and Roland Møller and is set to open on July 13th.

Here’s the film’s synopsis:

Global icon Dwayne Johnson leads the cast of Legendary’s Skyscraper as former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader and U.S. war veteran Will Sawyer, who now assesses security for skyscrapers. On assignment in China he finds the tallest, safest building in the world suddenly ablaze, and he’s been framed for it. A wanted man on the run, Will must find those responsible, clear his name and somehow rescue his family who is trapped inside the building…above the fire line.

Guillermo del Toro Wins DGA Awards

By Creative Media Times

The Shape of Water. (Fox Searchlight Pictures)

Directors Guild of America handed out their top honors last night, giving Guillermo del Toro its top honors for helming leading awards contender “Shape of Water,” further cementing Guillermo del Toro as frontrunner for the Oscars.

Guillermo del Toro wins feature award for the fantasy drama film, winning over over Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”), Martin McDonagh (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), Christopher Nolan (“Dunkirk”) and Jordan Peele (“Get Out”).

“The Shape of Water” also dominated 2018 Oscar nominations, earning 13 nods including best picture, best director and best actress for star Sally Hawkins.

Equal parts fantasy and romance, ‘Water’ continues director del Toro’s fascination with monsters and elements of dark fantasy in a historical setting similarly seen in Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), the director’s last major awards contender.

Back to DGA, Reed Morano won the award for Dramatic Series for The Handmaid’s Tale, while Jordan Peele, also an Oscar nominee, won big with the First-Time Feature Award for Get Out.

The DGA Awards is another strong of indicator of overall Oscar voter perception of films in contention: only seven DGA winners failed to win the academy award best director, the most recent being Ben Affleck, who won the DGA award for “Argo” but failed to secure Oscar nomination.

“Mission Impossible: Fallout” Poster And Teaser Released

By Creative Media Times

Paramount Pictures

After the title for the sixth installment in the Mission: Impossible film series was announced by star Tom Cruise last week, it’s only fitting to release the movie’s poster as well, as Paramount Pictures gears up the film’s promo ahead of the film’s big trailer debut on Sunday’s Super Bowl. A teaser for the film’s trailer also recently debuted online.

The poster shows a silhouette of Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt, masking a mountainous landscape with a helicopter and Hunt, true to character’s death defying stunts, dangling from a helicopter.

The teaser is series of quick cuts featuring the film’s cast, starting with Cruise’s Hunt walking through a door, and then walking alongside Isla Faust (Ferguson), followed by intense but still mysterious mustachioed villain August Walker (Henry Cavill) seemingly getting ready for a fistfight. We later see IMF Director Alan Hunley (Baldwin), Bassett’s mysterious character, Benji (Pegg) with Luther (Rhames) in fast action collages along with the icon theme playing in the background.

During filming, Cruise broke his ankle after a dangerous stunt gone awry, a stunt which involved Cruise leaping from one building to another. The injury shut down the film’s production for more than two months to allow the actor’s injury to heal. Here’s a footage of the insane stunt from Graham Norton Show which shows how the actor got injured. WARNING: As the host said, this is NOT FOR THE SQUEAMISH.

The Mission: Impossible film franchise is one of the most successful of all-time, with a worldwide gross of over $2.7 billion to date. Judging by these new promotional materials, the film seem set to deliver some more crazy action this summer.

Directed by frequent Cruise collaborator Christopher McQuarrie, who previously helmed Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation, Mission: Impossible – Fallout is scheduled for release on July 27, 2018.

New Trailer For Netflix’s “Mute” Is Enthralling

By Creative Media Times

Netflix

The fourth feature from director Duncan Jones following 2016’s Warcraft, 2011’s Source Code and 2009’s “Moon,” Netflix has released the latest trailer for its futuristic thriller “Mute.”

Described by Jones as a “spiritual sequel” to his 2009 feature debut “Moon,” the film stars Alexander Skarsgård as a mute bartender with a violent past, searching for his missing girlfriend Naadirah (Seyneb Saleh). Set in the futuristic underbelly of Berlin, the film also stars Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Justin Theroux (The Girl on the Train).

Jones has described Mute as being inspired by the 1982 classic sci-fi neo-noir film “Blade Runner.” “It’s a thriller with a very weird tone. It goes very dark, then it also goes very darkly funny. It’s science-fiction urban, so it certainly owes some of its influence to Blade Runner.”

Directed by Duncan Jones and written by Jones and Michael Robert Johnson, “Mute” is produced by Stuart Fenegan, while Charles J.D. Schissel and Trevor Beattie are executive producers. The film also features Seyneb Saleh, Ulf Herman, Gilbert Owuor, Daniel Fathers, and Noel Clarke.

“Mute” is set to premiere on Netflix on Feb. 23.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis courtesy of Netflix:

Berlin, the future, but close enough to feel familiar: In this loud, often brutal city, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) – unable to speak from a childhood accident – searches for his missing girlfriend, the love of his life, his salvation, through dark streets, frenzied plazas, and the full spectrum of the cities shadow-dwellers. As he seeks answers, Leo finds himself mixed up with Cactus Bill (Paul Rudd) and Duck (Justin Theroux), a pair of irreverent US army surgeons on a mission all their own. This soulful sci-fi journey from filmmaker Duncan Jones (
Moon, Source Code, Warcraft) imagines a world of strange currencies in which echoes of love and humanity are still worth listening to.

Now, the fun continues in this latest full-length trailer which features famous Aussie actors such as Margot Robbie, Chris Hemsworth, Jackman, and Russell Crowe supposedly playing a villain. Isla Fisher, Ruby Rose, and Luke Bracey are also in the trailer, as well as Chris Hemsworth’s brother Liam.

There’s definitely plenty of potential here, possibly one of the most star-studded films to come out in awhile, and sure to set the boxoffic on fire once it opens across the globe.

Exciting as this sounds, the movie is in fact a viral marketing campaign. At least according to this article from Brisbane Times, which reveals that the supposed reboot is part of an advertising campaign for Australian tourism, set to air during next month’s NFL Super Bowl, February 3 on NBC.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis cause, you know, we all want the movie to be real:

Crocodile Dundee is back. Well, actually, he’s missing in the Outback. And the only person who might be able to find him is the loudmouthed American son no one knew he had. Introducing Danny McBride as Brian Dundee. This son of a legend is forced to channel his Aussie roots as he teams up with a local expert, Wally Jr., played by Chris Hemsworth. Together, they’ll embark on the ultimate adventure in the land down under. It’s time to live up to the family name. DUNDEE.
