By Creative Media Times

Warner Bros. Pictures

Bradley Cooper’s critically acclaimed directorial debut continues its successful world tour as the film is set to open the 2018 Tokyo International Film Festival, Variety is reporting.

The Warner Bros. film recently had its world premiere at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on August 31 and screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. In both locations, the film received high praise especially for its stars Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.

The Tokyo Film Festival will run from Oct. 25 to Nov. 3 at venues around Tokyo, Japan, with
Japanese animated sci-fi kaiju film “Godzilla: The Planet Eater” closing the festival on November 3.

Interscope recently released the soundtrack details of the film, which includes new music from the film’s stars Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.

The 34-track album also features songs by Lukas Nelson (of Promise of the Real), Jason Isbell, Mark Ronson, and Andrew Wyatt of Miike Snow. Two of the songs in the soundtrack, “Shallow” and “Maybe It’s Time”, have been featured in the film’s trailer.

Part of the film was shot last year during Coachella. Original songs were also composed for the film, some of which was teased in the trailer, including a snippet of “The Shallow” which was co-penned by Mark Ronson, Gaga’s collaborator in her Joanne album.

This marks the third remake of the original 1937 film: the first was in 1954 which starred Judy Garland and James Mason, then again in 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.

Warner Bros. is set to release “A Star Is Born” on Oct. 5.

Summer 2018 Delivers $4.38 Billion in Domestic Grosses, Keeping Year on Record Pace

by Brad Brevet

Summer 2018 has come to an end, along with the month of August. To Hollywood’s delight, August finished up +29% compared to 2017’s disastrous performance and the summer movie season was up nearly +15% compared to last year’s similarly dismal showing. Disney led the way over the summer months serving as the only studio to top $1 billion in calendar grosses for the time frame, led by the June release of Incredibles 2, which brought in over $600 million to become the highest grossing animated domestic release ever.

Summer was also bolstered by such releases as Universal’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Fox’s Deadpool 2, the late-spring carryover Avengers: Infinity War and late-summer releases including Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Warner Bros.’s August surge in the form of The Meg and Crazy Rich Asians. In fact, The Meg and Crazy Rich Asians helped push WB over the $1 billion mark domestically for the year, taking the studio crown for the month of August.

Now And Forever…Superior Spider-Man

This December, Otto Octavius will leave the moniker of Doctor Octopus behind…and forever become THE SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN. The new ongoing series will be penned by Christos Gage (Spider-Geddon) with art by Mike Hawthorne (Deadpool), a collaboration that will also mark a renewal of Hawthorne’s Marvel exclusive.

“I’m more than thrilled to renew my exclusive with the folks at Marvel,” Hawthorne said. “I want to emphasize folks’ here, as I think we often talk about Marvel as this big entity that just makes things happen. Marvel, to me, is the people that work day in and day out to try to make the best comics they can. They’re the ones that keep me coming back. I’m ecstatic to dedicate the next few years of my creative energies to adding to the Marvel Universe!”

Under the spectacular storytelling of Gage and Hawthorne, Otto will prove (one way or the other) that he’s the most effective Super Hero in the world! And if you think you’ve already read the most intense Superior Spider-Man story? Think again. This is a tale like none other!

“I had the great pleasure of collaborating with Dan Slott on his incredible Superior Spider-Man run, and I can’t wait for people to see this new chapter in Otto’s journey toward… redemption? Corruption? Triumph? Tragedy? That remains to be seen,” Gage shared with Marvel.com. “What I can tell you is that the appropriately superior artistic team of Mike Hawthorne, Wade Von Grawbadger, and Jordie Bellaire — titans of their field, all — are absolutely killing it on the art.”

“After drawing Deadpool for as long I did, I was a little heartbroken to be moving on,” Hawthorne said. “BUT, getting to work on a Spider-Man book has blunted that pain significantly! (Sorry, Wade). I’m thrilled to get a shot to work on such a flagship character! I think working specifically on Superior Spider-Man is a unique opportunity that’ll allow me to explore my own approach to a Spider-Man book. It gives me a chance to illustrate how Otto’s approach and demeanor differs from Peter, and to build on a story that I find very compelling. Christos, [editor] Nick [Lowe] and [editor] Kathleen [Wisneski] have shown a willingness to trust me and let me do my thing, which allows me to do my best work. Honestly, I haven’t been this excited to work on a new book since the beginning of Deadpool!”

By Creative Media Times

Netflix

Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuaron’s Netflix drama “Roma” was the big winner on Saturday at the Venice Film Festival, winning the Golden Lion for best film, the highest prize given to a film at the prestigious festival.

This is Netflix’s first win at a major film festival, establishing the streaming giant as a strong force in arthouse film distribution.

The award was given to Guillermo del Toro, who last year won the Golden Lion for The Shape of Water, which went on to sweep the oscars including best picture and best director for del Toro.

Similarly, Roma’s win gives a strong start for the film’s oscar campaign. The film has been getting plenty of acclaim, with Hollywood Reporter describing it “an immersive bath in some of the most luxuriantly beautiful black-and-white images you’ve ever seen.”

The much buzzed-about family drama was written, co-edited, co-photographed, co-produced Alfonso Cuarón and stars Yalitza Aparicio, Marco Graf, Marina de Tavira, Enoc Leaño, Daniela Demesa and Daniel Valtierra.

Said to be Cuaron’s most personal film yet, “Roma” is filmed in black-and-white which perfectly complement’s the film’s ’70s setting. It is his first film since the sci-fi epic “Gravity.”

Roma’s festival play at Venice Film Fest is also its world premiere. This will be followed by screenings at Toronto International Film Festival before it debuts on Netflix on December 14, though no theatrical release date has been confirmed.
