The English actor is set to replace Will Smith in the upcoming sequel. Smith played Deadshot in the original 2016 supervillain team-up.

Warner Bros. immediately moved to Elba after Smith left the project due to scheduling conflicts.

Production in the film is set to start in September with James Gunn set to write and helm. Gunn previously directed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

The rest of the cast has not yet been announced though Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn character will be in a spin-off film called “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).” Yes you read that correctly, that is the title of the film.

Smith has a few films set for release this year, his much anticipated portrayal of The Genie in this summer’s live-action film adaptation of Disney’s Aladdin from director Guy Ritchie.

Suicide Squad 2 is currently set for release on August 6, 2021.
