The trailer, which premiered on Ellen this week, shows some of the origin of Javier Bardem’s villain, Captain Armando Salazar, and his encounter with a young Sparrow. “He took everything from me and filled me with rage,” says Salazar. We then learn that this encounter shaped Sparrow’s character and why he’s being chased. The trailer then continues with a grown-up Sparrow and more action on the highs seas.

This time around, there’s a lot more scenes in the trailer showing Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow, who’s been hidden away in most of the movie’s marketing. We also see the return of Geoffrey Rush’s Barbosa and Orlando Bloom’s Captain Will Turner.

I’m not entirely sure if the young Sparrow is CG for what appears to be a series of flashback scenes. Looking at the movie’s IMDB page, there’s no hint of who might be playing that role. But all in all, it looks like a fun new installment in the swashbuckling series. Despite diminishing returns on the domestic front, Sparrow and the ‘Pirates’ continue to be a major international attraction, with almost 77% of the global box-office gross of the last installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides coming from foreign markets.
