‘Green Day’ Brings Raucus Fun At BOK Center Leg Of Tour

Green Day @ BOK Center, Tulsa, OK, March 3, 2017

By Armando

It has been 12 years since Green Day’s politically-charged “American Idiot”, an album that spawned iconic songs, won numerous awards, inspired a broadway show, and became a worldwide phenomenon. But the message of their music is as relevant as ever.

No racism, no fascism, and no homophobia,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong protested to loud and wild crowd at BOK Center in Tulsa, OK, Tuesday night.

Green Day, which consists of Billie Joe Armstrong (Vocals/Guitar), Mike Dirnt (Bass) and Tre Cool (Drummer), is in an interesting position in today’s punk rock scene: the trio have produced a broad catalog of hits and lesser known gems over their three-decade career that speaks and adapts to political changes. On Tuesday night, Green Day mixed politics and religion, “comedy and tragedy”, old and new materials, leaving the crowd rocking, inspired and just having a great fun time. The band reciprocated Tulsa fans’ enthusiasm with an exciting and memorable night, proving they are still one of the best live acts right now.

The band’s career-spanning set was a varied and wide-ranging collection, performing songs from major label debut, Dookie that delighted original Green Day fans, to hits from ‘Idiot’, as well as new songs from ‘Revolution Radio’ and a few surprises in between. The tour is in support of ‘Revolution’, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 Album chart when it was released in early October last year.

Gigi Hadid, Appropriation or Progress?

By: Andrew Van Wilpe

The American fashion model, Gigi Hadid has come under some scrutiny, in recent days, following the release of the cover of Vogue Arabia’s first edition. In the black and white cover photo, the model sported a beaded veil, bare shouldered. Inside the magazine there is another photo of Gigi dressed in a more traditional looking, hot pink and fuchsia hijab.

Although, Gigi is of Palestinian decent, coming from her father’s side, she is not of the Muslim faith. The critics accuse this 21-year-old model and Vogue of religious appropriation. Her critics are upset because they believe Gigi and Vogue are glamourizing something that other women are criticized for. One critic tweeted, “So Gigi is getting praised for wearing a Hijab bc “fashion” while women who actually wear Hijab are attacked, shamed, and threatened?”

The question from most of the critics is, “why Vogue did not choose an actual Muslim model for this cover?” It seems the issue is more about representation. Critics believe Vogue should have used a Muslim model if they wanted to avoid this controversy and wanted to promote inclusion.

Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” receives coveted 100% on Rotten Tomatoes

By AI Creative Media

“Get Out,” a racially-charged horror thriller from Jordan Peele (of Key & Peele fame), earned a rare 100% “fresh” rating on the film review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. The movie currently have 131 reviews and counting.

Mercury News calls it a “classic horror” and gave it a perfect 4/4 score, while Hollywood Reporter calls it “one of the most satisfying thrillers in several years”.

The movie is in a very rare company. To put this in perspective, no wide theatrical release garnered similar acclaim this year at this point, while last year, out of the hundreds of movies released, there were only four that scored 100%: “Things to Come (L’avenir)”, “Tower”, Only Yesterday, and O.J.: Made in America, none of which received wide theatrical release similar to Peele’s film.

Buoyed by the strong reviews, “Out” is expected to displant WB’s hit “The LEGO Batman Movie” from no.1 at the boxoffice this weekend, earning Universal/Blumhouse its second surprise hit this year after last month’s Split.

This is Peele’s directorial debut. He is best known for starring in Comedy Central series Key & Peele and MADtv. But that is most likely to change based on the critical and commercial performance of “Get Out” so far.

Its official: Matt Reeves will direct ‘The Batman’

By AI Creative Media

After weeks of rumors, uncertainty and speculation surrounding one of Warner Bros. most valuable comic book properties, the studio announced today that Matt Reeves will indeed direct the solo Batman movie. The word comes from Deadline Thursday.

Many are probably familiar with Reeves’ work by now, which includes monster movie “Cloverfield” and 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”, as well as this summer’s highly anticipated “War for the Planet of the Apes” so this might suggest that the studio is very happy with results.

Reeves seems excited about his upcoming task, saying in a statement from the studio on Thursday, “I have loved the Batman story since I was a child. He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen.”

Affleck was originally slated to direct the standalone Batman movie in addition to headlining, but stepped down last month due to the demands to do both jobs. He donned the cape and cowl last year in Batman V Superman:Dawn of Justice and will reprise the role in Zack Snyder’s Justice League on November this year.

There is currently no release date set for The Batman.

Yeezus Walks: A Kanye West statue was unveiled in Los Angeles this morning

By: Shane Brooks

This morning, on Hollywood Boulevard, a life size statue of artist Kanye West was revealed with a thorn of crowns on his head, nails through his hands and a pair of his own 350 Yeezy Boost sneakers on his feet. The statue stands on a podium with the words “False Idol”inscribed into it. Kanye has been known to call himself a “God” in several interviews and with songs titled “I am a God” and “Jesus Walks” and calling himself Yeezus it will be very interestingto hear the artist’s thoughts on the project. Attempts have been made by several publications to reach out to West’s representatives for a comment but none has been made so far.

The crucified West was created by L.A. street artist Plastic Jesus. You may remember himfrom an art piece he did last year by putting a small wall around Donald Trump’s star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood. The Hollywood Reporter interviewed the artist and he had this to say: “West is a genius at writing and producing but he’s not a God, and that’s where we put him. Until there’s an issue in his life or a hiccup in his career, then we crucify him.” When asked about the message behind the artwork he elaborated by saying, “By all means, treat and respect these people as artists but don’t turn them into gods- because we crucify our gods.”

On February 24th the statue will be a part of Plastic Jesus’s exhibition with guitarist Billy Morrison called Anesthesia: The Art of Oblivion. For more information on the statue or the artist himself you can visit his website, plasticjesus.net. Here you can see other public art displays he has put together and even purchase pieces from his online collection.

So, if you’re in the Hollywood area make sure to go see the statue on display before it is taken down and we will be waiting to hear from Kanye West himself to hear his thoughts on the piece.
