Marvel Announces Star Wars Original Marvel Years #50 Facsimile

In celebration of Marvel’s 80th Anniversary, Marvel is releasing a special Facsimile edition of the 1977 STAR WARS #50. Coinciding directly with May’s upcoming STAR WARS #108 one-shot from Matthew Rosenberg and artists Giuseppe Camuncoli, Luke Ross, Kerry Gammill, Andrea Broccardo, this Facsimile features a full reprint of the issues’ classic story – ads and all – from writer Archie Williams and artists Al Williamson, Tom Palmer and Walter Simonson.

With new stories of original series characters such as Jaxxon, Amaiza, Domina Tagge, Valance the Hunter, and more, STAR WARS #108 acts as a direct sequel to Star Wars #50 – making this a truly epic 80th Anniversary celebration.

“So many true comic legends worked on those books- Archie Goodwin, Roy Thomas, Walt Simonson, Howard Chaykin, Al Williamson, David Michelinie, Klaus Janson, Jo Duffy, and so many more. It’s pretty overwhelming to think about, actually. What they made was the product of a very different time in comics, and it’s something modern audiences aren’t really accustomed to. So while it would be fun, if a little humbling, to try and just impersonate them, we wanted to do something a bit different, something that would appeal to classic and modern fans alike,” Matt Rosenberg told Comicbook.com of writing STAR WARS #108.

Destin Daniel Cretton has been tapped by Disney to direct Shang-Chi, Marvel‘s first film with an Asian protagonist.

The talented writer/director is best known for the critically acclaimed 2013 independent drama about a group home for teenagers “Short Term 12,” which earned multiple accolades including three Independent Spirit Award nominations.

Coincidentally, that film was the first lead feature film of actress Brie Larson, who herself is flying high this week as the titular superhero in another Marvel Cinematic Universe film Captain Marvel.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Dave Callaham is writing the script for “Shang-Chi”. Callaham recently wrote the screenplay for “Wonder Woman” sequel “Wonder Woman 1984”, set for release summer of next year.

Created by writer Steve Englehart and artist Jim Starlin, “Shang-Chi” was first published by Marvel Comics in 1973 in Special Marvel Edition #15 and is often called the “Master of Kung Fu.”

In the comics, the character is raised by his father, genius supervillain Fu Manchu. Shang-Chi is trained in martial arts and developed super-human skills. He later found out about his father’s true evil nature and the two became enemies. Decades later during the Marvel NOW! relaunch, he was recruited by Captain America and Iron Man to join Avengers.

Cretton recently directed the upcoming biographical drama “Just Mercy,” which stars Michael B. Jordan and reunites the director with Larson.

The film is set to be directed by “The Hangover” film series creator and director Todd Phillips, with the script to be written by Scott Silver. The two recently worked together in the upcoming “The Joker” film with stars Joaquin Phoenix.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the biopic will focus on the rise of Hogan’s popularity and is described as an origin story of Hulkamania.

Bollea himself will be serving as a consultant on the movie as well as executive producer.

Hemsworth will next be seen in this summer’s upcoming blockbusters “Avengers: Endgame” and “Men in Black: International” and possibly later this year in “Dhaka”.
