Microsoft wants to be more like Apple, plans to launch more own-brand devices

By Dan Graziano

Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Steve Ballmer on Tuesday published his annual letter to shareholders and revealed a new direction for the world’s largest software company. In addition to the Xbox and upcoming Surface tablet, Ballmer hinted that Microsoft may build more own-brand devices in the future. “There will be times when we build specific devices for specific purposes, as we have chosen to do with Xbox and the recently announced Microsoft Surface,” he wrote. BGR exclusively reported earlier this month that the Redmond, Washington-based company plans to release its own Windows Phone 8 smartphone in the coming months.

Microsoft is interested in tightly integrating its high-quality software with its own high-quality devices, similar to what Apple (AAPL) has done for years. The CEO noted that the company doesn’t plan to abandon its partners anytime soon, however.

Chip Design Luminary Leaves Samsung for Apple

By Don Clark

Samsung recently raised eyebrows by beefing up its team of Texas-based chip designers, including those whose backgrounds pointed to an interest in chips for server systems. Now one of the most prominent of those recruits has left the South Korean company for Apple .

The gadget maker has hired Jim Mergard, a 16-year veteran of Advanced Micro Devices who was a vice president and chief engineer there before he left for Samsung. He is known for playing a leading role in the development of a high-profile AMD chip that carried the code name Brazos and was designed for low-end portable computers.

PC sales to decline in 2012 for the first time in 11 years

Brittany Hillen

For the first time since the dot-com bust 11 years ago, PC shipments are expected to decline 1.2% from last year, with an anticipated drop from 2011′s 352.8 million units to 348.7 million units. PC sales have been lagging all year, with a recent study showing that out of the top four vendors, only Lenovo experienced an increase in sales. While disconcerting, the hope that back-to-school sales would boost the numbers, as is usually the case, kept everyone optimistic.

Earlier in 2012, as Intel showed off a variety of ultrabooks and the first glimpses of Windows 8 emerged at CES, the industry was hopeful that sales would increase as the year went on. Analysts believed that the innovation displayed would go on to drag lagging PC sales back up, and that all would be well. When the Q1 data came in and showed poor sales, nervousness arose, but optimism was still prevalent.

Jimmy Page says ‘no’ to Led Zeppelin reunion

By JOHN CARUCCI

NEW YORK (AP) — Led Zeppelin will not be reuniting any time soon.

That message came through loud and clear Tuesday with sarcasm, stoic silence, and even the occasional barb at reporters that dared to ask. Just the mere mention of the topic set lead singer Robert Plant off at their news conference for the bands upcoming concert film, “Celebration Day.”

But at the film’s premiere later in the evening, guitarist Jimmy Page set the record straight, sort of, about a potential reunion.

“I think it’s disappointing for people when the answer is no,” Page said. But he later added: “That’s what it is now.”

Apple Store Lottery the Only Cure for Hong Kong’s iPhone 5 Fever

By John Paczkowski

The iPhone 5 hit Hong Kong on Sept. 21, as part of a first wave of international launches, and, like most of the other markets the device has reached, it is in very short supply there.

Recent visitors to Hong Kong and a few longtime residents tell AllThingsD that it’s tough to find any iPhone 5 inventory in the city. “The stores are all sold out,” said one local. “Carriers like SmarTone are taking orders, but they’re not offering delivery until late October, early November. If you’ve just got to have one, your best bet is the Apple Store lottery, but that’s a total crapshoot.”

Bear Grylls making competition series for NBC

Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Bear Grylls will soon have some company on his in-the-wild adventures.

NBC said Monday that it is making a competition series with Grylls. He is the former star of Discovery’s “Man vs. Wild” series that tested his survival skills in foreboding settings

The NBC series, “Get Out Alive,” is planned for airing next summer. In it, Grylls will guide two teams in adventures. He says competitors will learn survival skills and teamwork but will have to suffer some pain before being rewarded in the end.

Grylls is co-producing the series with Electus, the studio run by former NBC entertainment chief Ben Silverman.

‘Lincoln’ Premieres At NYFF: Daniel Day-Lewis Performance Is Overwhelming

By MIKE FLEMING

As Deadline revealed exclusively last week, the Steven Spielberg-directed Lincoln made a surprise world premiere at the New York Film Festival on Monday evening. It has been one of the wildcards in the Oscar conversation. I saw it tonight. I thought Daniel Day-Lewis was a deserving Oscar winner for My Left Foot and There Will Be Blood, and that he probably should have won for In The Name Of The Father. But this really is his best performance. He becomes Lincoln, beyond an uncanny physical resemblance. He has fully fleshed out the 16th U.S. President into a living, breathing man. He captures his intelligence, his grasp of the high stakes of prolonging the Civil War until he can get the votes to abolish slavery for good, and moments of charm and sly wit that brightened the darkness around him as the country was in the fourth year of a war that had to end.
