Benedict Cumberbatch Narrates Documentary About Tolkien’s Great-Grandson’s Journey

theres-a-hole-in-my-bucketBenedict Cumberbatch lends his voice to a documentary that traces an extraordinary personal quest.

“There’s A Hole in My Bucket” follows Royd Tolkien, great-grandson of J.R.R. Tolkien, as he embarks on a journey to honor his late brother. The film captures Royd completing a bucket list his brother created before he died, a series of challenges meant to push him beyond his comfort zone and celebrate life in the process.

Cumberbatch’s narration guides viewers through the emotional weight of grief, brotherhood, and the kind of adventure that runs in the Tolkien family DNA. It’s a story rooted in loss but driven by love and the determination to keep a promise.

The documentary arrives as a rare intersection of literary legacy and raw human emotion. For indie filmmakers working with personal stories, it’s a reminder that the most universal themes often come from the most intimate places.

Southern Slasher “Hellbilly Hollow” Hits Theaters After Hollywood Premiere

A slasher film shot inside a real Alabama haunted attraction is now playing in select theaters nationwide.

“Hellbilly Hollow” opened Friday in eight cities after a packed premiere on LA’s Sunset Strip. The film is the first ever shot at the actual Hellbilly Hollow haunt in Vincent, Alabama, a venue that’s been scaring visitors for years with its haunted barn and backwoods hayride.

Director Kevin Wayne got the idea while shooting a commercial at the attraction. Instead of rebuilding it on a soundstage, they filmed on location. Every corner fans recognize from the real haunt made it into the movie.

The story follows paranormal YouTubers who show up to film the night before Halloween. They quickly learn the scares aren’t staged. Killer siblings Tickles, a disfigured clown, and Bull, his manipulative brother, are real, and they’re hunting.

The film stars Kurt Deimer and Kevin Wayne, with an original score by metal drummer Roy Mayorga. Deimer’s Bald Man Films produced alongside Todd Slater of Convoke Media. Atlas Distribution is handling the U.S. release, with Jinga Films covering international sales.

“Hellbilly Hollow” is playing in Birmingham, Cincinnati, Columbus, Jacksonville, LA, Omaha and Orlando. Regal Edwards Long Beach is hosting a public Q&A after the 7:40 p.m. screening Friday.

For indie horror filmmakers, it’s proof you can turn a regional attraction into a theatrical release.

Alexander Payne’s Debut Feature Gets a 4K Upgrade for Its 30th Anniversary

citizen-ruthBefore Election and Sideways made him an indie darling, Alexander Payne kicked off his career with Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy that ripped into the culture wars with zero mercy. Now Film Forum is bringing back his 1996 debut in a new 4K restoration, running October 30 through November 5.

Laura Dern stars as Ruth Stoops, a drug-addicted woman with four kids already taken away by the state. When she gets pregnant again while locked up, a judge gives her an ultimatum: get an abortion or face a felony charge. What follows is a brutal tug-of-war between pro-life and pro-choice activists, both desperate to use her as a poster child for their cause. Ruth doesn’t care about either side. She just wants to survive.

The film premiered at Sundance in 1996 and introduced Payne’s signature style, sharp satire with uncomfortable truths baked in. Critics at the time loved Dern’s performance, calling her “a revelation” and “weirdly lovable” despite playing someone you probably shouldn’t root for.

Payne went on to earn an Oscar nomination for Election three years later, but Citizen Ruth remains a boldly irreverent first swing. The restoration was handled by IndieCollect, working with Criterion and Paramount. If you missed it the first time around, here’s your chance.

Animation Is Film Festival Returns with Knights of Guinevere Theatrical Premiere and Nine Competition Films

animation-is-filmAnimation Is Film is kicking off its ninth edition with something different: a TV show.

The Los Angeles festival announced its 2026 lineup, running October 16-19 at TCL Chinese 6 Theatres. For the first time ever, AIF opens with an animated series instead of a feature, bringing Dana Terrace’s Knights of Guinevere to the big screen. Terrace, the creator behind one of the decade’s most beloved animated series, returns to showrunning with this psychological thriller from Glitch Productions.

Nine features compete for prizes this year, led by Louis Clichy’s Iron Boy, which swept awards at Cannes and Annecy. Also in the mix: Leah Nelson’s Tangles, starring Abbi Jacobson and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Cartoon Saloon’s latest Julián, and The Violinist, winner of the 2026 Annecy Cristal.

The festival doubles as an awards season preview. Iron Boy has already played Toronto and New York, while Jim Queen caused a stir at Cannes. AIF also showcases first-time filmmakers like Masanao Kawajiri (Cherry and Virgin) alongside returning favorites like Sébastien Laudenbach, whose Chicken for Linda! won both jury and audience awards in 2023.

Special events include a 25th anniversary conversation with Cartoon Saloon founders, a behind-the-scenes look at Disney’s upcoming Hexed, and a work-in-progress peek at Matt Braly’s independently funded Clara and the Below.

For animators and fans tired of studios playing it safe, this festival matters.

New Documentary Traces 20 Years of Research Linking What We Eat to How We See and Think

A new health documentary follows an Irish scientist’s two-decade quest to prove that nutrition affects vision and brain health in ways we’ve barely begun to understand.

“A Vision for Vision,” directed by two-time Emmy winner Wayne Chesler, tracks Professor John Nolan’s research into carotenoids, the plant-based pigments found in marigolds, eyes, and the brain. The film spans locations from marigold fields in Mexico to research labs in Ireland, omega-3-rich waters off Norway, and elite performance centers in Singapore.

Nolan, who founded and directs the Nutrition Research Centre Ireland, has spent over 20 years studying how targeted nutrition might support vision, memory, and aging. His recent trials, including the re-MIND, CARES Trial 2, and CREST AMD studies, found that supplements combining carotenoids, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin E showed positive effects on Alzheimer’s symptoms, improved working memory in healthy adults, and better visual performance in patients with early macular degeneration.

The doc arrives as conversations around preventative health gain traction. Nolan’s pitch is straightforward: aging happens, disease doesn’t have to, and earlier intervention through nutrition could change outcomes.

The film drops on digital and VOD November 3. For indie filmmakers covering health and science, it’s a reminder that some of the most compelling stories live in labs, not studios.

Mirka Andolfo Returns to Victorian Horror With Merciless, a Long-Awaited Sequel to Mercy

The Devil of Woodsburgh is back.

Mirka Andolfo is returning to the world of her international hit Mercy with Merciless, a four-issue miniseries launching this December from Image Comics. This time, she’s teaming up with artist Lidia Bolognini (Sweet Paprika: Black, White & Pink) for a new Gothic horror tale set 15 years after the original.

“Mercy readers have been waiting for this sequel, and I’m so happy it’s finally on its way!” Andolfo says. The story follows Rory, now all grown up and ready to uncover dark secrets in Woodsburgh.

The mining town thought it was done with devils. But when Rory arrives to open her factory, a mysterious drug called Electric Sumac starts spreading through the streets, turning ordinary people unnaturally strong and dangerously unhinged. Rory and her companion Joel know the drug’s origins aren’t earthly, and they’re determined to stop it.

Meanwhile, Sheriff Bancroft returns to settle his father’s unfinished business. Old debts resurface, secrets unravel, and Rory might find herself caught in the middle of it all.

Andolfo describes it as a dark supernatural horror story perfect for fans of From Hell, Fatale, and the original Mercy series.

Merciless #1 drops December 2 at comic shops, with 11 different covers including incentive variants. For anyone catching up, the complete Mercy series is collected in a trade paperback available now.

Hilary Duff Adds 32 Tour Dates After Selling Out Around the World

Hilary Duff is taking “the lucky me tour” even further. The pop star just announced 32 new dates across Europe, Latin America, and the U.S. after selling out arenas worldwide.

The expansion kicks off May 7 in Madrid, hitting Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm, San Juan, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Santiago. Rebecca Black joins for all European stops. The U.S. leg launches October 1 in Sunrise, Florida, wrapping November 20 in Anaheim. Dashboard Confessional and Tegan and Sara support on select American dates.

Tickets go on sale Friday, October 2, with various presales starting September 28.

Duff teased the announcement at her second sold-out O2 Arena show in London. During the encore of “What Dreams Are Made Of,” confetti rained down reading “2027 More Dates Loading” as a countdown clock appeared on screens.

This is her first full-scale global tour in almost two decades, celebrating her sixth album *luck… or something*. Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Variety all named it one of 2026’s best albums. The record hit number three on the Billboard 200, her highest chart position since 2007, and went number one in Canada and Australia.

The tour has already crushed it. Madison Square Garden, LA’s Kia Forum, and multiple international venues sold out.

For indie artists grinding toward their first headlining run, Duff’s 18-year gap between major tours proves momentum can return stronger than ever.

A Hollywood Hills Dream House Turns Into a Vampire Nightmare in “The Teenage Vampire”

A recent high school grad thinks she’s scored the perfect spot in the Hollywood Hills. Parties, romance, the whole California dream. Then she finds out her landlords are vampires, and her first party ends in a bloodbath.

“The Teenage Vampire” hits VOD and digital platforms October 27 via Lionsgate. The indie horror follows Sandra, who moves into what looks like a chic bungalow only to discover the ancient creatures living upstairs have plans that don’t involve welcoming her to the neighborhood.

The film stars Jazlyn Nicolette Sward alongside Kelly Lynn Reiter (“Deadlock,” “Mojave Diamonds”), James Chalke (“Renegades,” “Don’t Kill It”), and Courtney Akbar (“Boneyard,” “Clown Fear”). It’s directed with an 85-minute runtime and an R rating for language, bloody images, and the kind of teen behavior that tends to attract vampires.

Shot in 2022, the film arrives just in time for Halloween viewing. It’s priced at $5.99 to rent, $9.99 to own.

For indie horror fans, it’s another entry in the crowded vampire genre, but one that swaps castles and small towns for LA’s glittering hills, where even the undead want a piece of the view.

Sandra Hüller Reunites With Her Father in Pawlikowski’s Postwar Drama ‘Fatherland’

Paweł Pawlikowski is back with another black-and-white stunner. His new film “Fatherland” premieres October 23 at Film Forum in New York, and it’s already racking up serious attention.

The film stars Sandra Hüller (fresh off “Anatomy of a Fall”) as Erika Mann, daughter of legendary author Thomas Mann, played by Hanns Zischler. Set in 1949, they’re driving through a bombed-out Germany after years of exile in the U.S. Mann’s returned as a Nobel Prize winner with celebrity status, but the country he knew is gone. Erika’s coordinating his trip while dealing with her own family trauma, trying to break through her father’s distant facade.

Pawlikowski won Best Director at Cannes for this one. It’s also Poland’s official Oscar submission for Best International Feature. If you know his work, the pedigree checks out. “Ida” won the Oscar in 2014, and “Cold War” scored three nominations including Best Director.

The reviews are glowing. Critics are calling it “a perfectly cut jewel” and praising cinematographer Łukasz Żal’s gorgeous monochrome work. At just 82 minutes, Pawlikowski keeps it lean and devastating.

For indie cinema lovers, this is the kind of restrained, visually striking filmmaking that reminds you why arthouse matters. Film Forum’s the place to see it first.

Blind Paralympian Attempts 3,600-Mile Solo Bike Ride in New Doc ‘Blind AF’

A blind Army veteran is about to do something nobody thought possible.

Shawn Cheshire, a 13-time U.S. National Champion in paracycling, rode a single, non-tandem bicycle 3,600 miles across America in 60 straight days. Completely blind. New documentary Blind AF chronicles the entire journey.

Directed by Gina LeVay Goldstein, the film follows Cheshire’s historic cross-country ride, but it’s really a story about trauma and healing. Cheshire lost her sight in 2009 after a brain injury while working as a paramedic. She was 36, an Army vet, a single mom of two. Depression hit hard. Treatment at a VA hospital, including adaptive sports and therapy for Complex PTSD, helped her rebuild.

By 2016, she was competing at the Rio Paralympics. She went on to set a world record as the first blind person to cross the Grand Canyon without a sighted guide.

“This film goes beyond the epic athletic achievement,” Goldstein says. “It’s a story about healing, transformation, and the power of vulnerability.”

The doc mixes vérité footage, journal entries, and immersive sound design to put you inside Cheshire’s world. Executive produced by five-time Emmy winner Jeff Zimbalist, Blind AF premiered at Geena Davis’s Bentonville Film Festival and won Best of Fest at the 2025 Sedona International Film Festival.

It drops October 28 on Amazon Prime, AppleTV, Tubi, Roku, YouTube, and Documentary+. For indie filmmakers tackling real stories, this is what it looks like when grit meets craft.
