The spin-off to “Men In Black” is officially moving ahead. Deadline recently reported that the project is being fast tracked by Sony Pictures and is eyeing the high stakes May 17, 2019 release date.

Its already been confirmed that original franchise stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will not be reprising their roles, though the currently untitled film will be set in the same world as the original but with a contemporary take on the franchise.

The script which is penned by Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight writers Matt Holloway and Art Marcum expands on the original’s universe of extraterrestrial lifeforms. No director has been announced yet. Steven Spielberg will continue to executive produce the film.

There is another Men In Black movie in development with Sony, one that is a 21 Jump Street franchise crossover, but the report indicates the spinoff will arrive first.

Men In Black was originally based on the comic book created by Lowell Cunningham and illustrated by Sandy Carruthers and is now owned by Marvel Comics. The sci-fi comedy series is one of Sony Pictures’ most profitable properties, altogether grossing $1.6 billion globally.
