David Byrne Releases First Solo Album In 14 Years

By Armando

Nonesuch – Todo Mundo

Former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne is set to release a new album on March 9, titled ‘American Utopia’ due out through Todomundo / Nonesuch Records.

Featuring songs co-written with English musician Brian Eno and previously released collaborations with composer Oneohtrix Point Never (0PN) and British singer, songwriter and record producer Sampham, as well as songs with Jam City, the full album is available for streaming ahead of the release date via NPR Music’s First Listen series. Head over to npr.og website to listen to the album.

Recorded at various locations such as in Byrne’s own home studio, XL Studios, Oscilloscope, and London’s Livingston Studio 1, ‘American Utopia’ is Byrne’s first solo album in 14 years since 2004’s Grown Backwards. Byrne’s last album was “Love This Giant,” a collaborative effort with St. Vincent (Anne Erin “Annie” Clark) in 2012.

Byrne will head out on a world tour featuring Perfume Genius in support of the album. Perfume Genius’ gorgeous songs are filled with unexpected sounds and deeply personal — and his costumes would have made David Bowie jealous. I am looking forward to sharing the stage with Mike during some #AmericanUtopia dates this Spring!,” Byrne posted on his Twitter account.

Regarding the album title, Byrne stated: “The album title refers not to a specific utopia, but rather to our longing, frustration, aspirations, fears, and hopes regarding what could be possible, what else is possible. The description, the discontent and the desire — I have a feeling that is what these songs touch on.”

Byrne was the founding member of acclaimed ’80s band Talking Heads, which was one of the major acts that helped define the new wave music genre. He won an Academy Award, Golden Globe and Grammy Awards for scoring Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor (1987) with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Cong Su.

Oscar 2018: A Look At The Best Original Song Nominees

By Armando

Coming into this Sunday’s Academy Awards, there’s an unpredictable category which features a broad selection of nominees from diverse types of films and could yield a surprising result: Best Original Song.

Last year’s winners for best original song, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul for La La Land’s “City of Stars” are up for another Oscar trophy, this time for “This is Me” from The Greatest Showman, a musical currently enjoying some excellent run at the boxoffice.

It will not be a walk in the park for the duo this time, with many expecting “Remember Me” by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez from the animated hit Coco taking home the prize.

Like Pasek and Paul, Kristen and Robert has won before, for Frozen’s “Let It Go” (2013). It certainly helps that Coco is nominated for Best Animated Feature and a global boxoffice hit. And there goes a two-way race begins, or so we thought.

All the other nominees clearly resonated with voters just as strongly, each with a special quality to surprise and take home the big prize.

“Stand Up For Something” from Marshall is a collaboration between Common and musical chameleon Diane Warren, the latter a nine-time nominee but has strangely never won and which many voters may deem overdue for an Oscar.

“Mighty River” from Mudbound is performed by R&B/Hip-Hop superstar Mary J. Blige, who became the first woman to receive multiple Oscar nominations in the same year (she’s also up for Best Supporting Actress).

Then finally, there’s the acoustic song “Mystery of Love” by acclaimed singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens from Call Me By Your Name. The song was featured prominently during the film and in the film’s trailer.

Will the Academy go with the rousing bona fide hits? Or the renowned industry veterans? Or the acclaimed indie?

This year’s nominees are confirmed to perform during the awards ceremony on Sunday, March 4, 2016, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood. The show will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, and it will air on ABC.

Here’s Academy Award nominees for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song). Continue reading

Kendrick Lamar’s “Black Panther The Album: Music From and Inspired By” (Review)

By Niy Birden

Top Dawg – Aftermath –
Interscope

Kendrick Lamar is Killmonger. If he hasn’t made it clear before, the album he’s curated definitely puts it into a higher perspective now.

We’ve seen him state that he wanted to be a villain in Black Panther-and for quite obvious reasons. The film version of the Marvel comic book series has created a wave in the film industry with its Afro-futurist, Black diaspora atmosphere that has re-surged discussion of African Americans in cinema.

Released one month after Black Panther’s film debut at the Dolby Theatre, Kendrick Lamar’s curated album is an exploration into the world of Wakanda-or, at least, Killmonger’s world.

With song highlights such as “Paramedic” taking such a strong homage to the narrative of African Americans in urban settings, “Black Panther The Album: Music From and Inspired By” is a very dark, flow-heavy, gritty environment. The artistic, lyrical and even musical content does not do the whole film justice, for many reasons. While the film was heavy on female-empowerment and showing both sides of a common race to liberation for Wakandans, this album only featured 4 females and played on a very rebellious theme catering to the unapologetic Black Panther lover. The kind of fan who would probably agree with the main antagonist, Killmonger’s style of conflict. A bit of backstory:

In the film, Killmonger is a fellow Wakandan whose father is killed by the King T’Chaka because he tried to sell off their most valuable resource-a metal that has kept Wakanda an independent nation with advanced technology unlike any other. Killmonger’s father is betrayed by his aid who works for the King, and Killmonger is left in 1990’s California fatherless, and to experience a Black experience that is now well-documented in American history. He feels abandoned, but seemingly for the cause, and sets out to take over Wakanda, in order to use its resources to liberate fellow Africans all over the world, but mainly for sake of knowing that he was able to take the King’s son- T’Challa, who has now ascended the throne- and replace him.

James Hetfield Joins Cast Of Ted Bundy Movie

By Armando

Metallica frontman James Hetfield will soon make his big-screen acting debut as he joins the cast of “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile,” an upcoming thriller film from Voltage Pictures, Variety reports.

The film will focus on notorious serial killer Ted Bundy and his longtime girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer. Currently in production, the film will be shown from the perspective of Elizabeth. It was unveiled at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival and features Zac Efron as Bundy with Lily Collins playing his girlfriend.

Hetfield is set to play Officer Bob Hayward, “a no-nonsense Utah highway patrol veteran who was the first law enforcement officer to arrest Bundy in 1975 after pulling the killer over and discovering burglary tools in his car, but wisely suspecting much worse.”

Joe Berlinger is helming “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.” He was nominated in 2012 for an Oscar Best Documentary Feature in 2012 with the late Bruce Sinofsky for helming “Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory.”

Hetfield’s casting might seem to come out of left field, but Hetfield and Berlinger had actually collaborated previously when Berlinger and Sinofsky directed and produced “Some Kind of Monster,” the 2004 rock documentary which follows Metallica throughout studio rehearsals and features various concert footage of the band. Later that year, Berlinger released a book “Metallica: This Monster Lives,” which chronicled his experiences during the creation of the documentary.

Other previously announced cast of “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile,” were John Malkovich, Haley Joel Osment, Jim Parsons, Kaya Scodelario, Angela Sarafyan, Jeffrey Donovan Terry Kinney and Dylan Baker.

Bringing Sound to the Screen: An Interview with Film Composer Alex Geringas

Eric Gasa

When talking about his work, Alex Geringas can’t help but excitedly chuckle. The Moscow born, German-raised, and LA-dwelling musician has had a steady rise to success from penning failed pop singles back in the 90’s to writing big screen movie scores, and collaborating with pop legends like Cher and Kelly Clarkson.

During my chat with Geringas I had the opportunity to speak with an idiosyncratic man dedicated to both his family and craft. In his latest project, writing the score for Netflix’s Trolls: The Beat Goes On! Geringas channels his inner Wagner; infusing hilariously overdramatic tones to one of the most charming, quirkiest kids shows on TV today. The juxtaposition fits his personality perfectly; a man of the dignified arts not afraid to join in on the fun.

Other scores to Geringas’ credit includes Pitch Perfect 3, Home: Adventures with Tip & Oh, Ice Age: Collision Course, and The LEGO Ninjago Movie.

How did you first break into the music industry?

It was back in 1998, I was living in Germany and a friend of mine told me, ‘Hey man, let’s write a hit!’ At the time I knew nothing about writing for artists and then he told me lets write about something everybody likes and bring it to a publisher. I thought it was all talk. We wrote a song about a topic we both thought everybody liked, vacation. We played it to the publisher, who liked it, then the record label sent it to a radio station, and then we had our first release.

But this also has to be the biggest flop in my career to date because nobody bought the single. There was a producer though that heard our song and reached out to me to write one with him for a rap group. That first single would become my first Top Ten hit in Germany. Our second release together became the theme song for the first episode of Big Brother in Germany.

As a composer and songwriter, which comes first, the lyrics or the melody?

I am and always will be a melody guy. I love working with lyricists, but I also love setting a concept with them and developing that idea.

Who are some of your musical inspirations?

One of my biggest musical inspirations is John Williams, the film composer. I love the variety of styles that he has composed. And of course, there is Alexandre Desplat who is just phenomenal in how he found a dialogue where no words are spoken in, The Shape of Water. Absolutely fantastic. That is where I would like to be someday.

Best Buy Set To Pull CDs From Stores

By Creative Media Times

Its an end of an era. CDs, once the bread the butter of the music industry, is on their way out.

Best Buy, once the major music merchandiser in the US, will soon be pulling CDs from all of its stores by July 1, Billboard reports.

The article also claims that Target will follow suit if their consignment condition is not met. Specially, Target is only willing to pay labels for sold CDs. Currently, Target takes inventory risk by paying for goods shipped within 60 days, and ships back unsold CDs to the label for credit.

With strong performance of streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify continued unabated, dominating US music industry revenue last year for up to 62 percent of the total market, the news is both heartbreaking and unsurprising. There is also growing competition from smart speakers like Google Home, Sonos One, Amazon Echo which is changing the way people listen to music.

Last year, CD sales in the US were down 18.5 percent. while Best Buy, once the biggest seller of CD units in the US, now only sells $40 million annually. Overall CD sales dropped from its peak of 800 million in 2001 to 89 million in 2017, according to Consumer Affairs.

The good news: Best Buy looks to continue offering vinyl to customers, at least for the next two years. And for good reason. Vinyl seems to be making some sort of a comeback, with sales growth for the 12th consecutive year, or 14% of all physical album sales in 2017.

Def Leppard’s Entire Discography Now Available On Streaming

By Armando

Phonogram (Europe)
Mercury (US and Japan)

They may be a couple of steps behind the streaming landscape but on Friday, Def Leppard is finally ready to get rocked as the classic catalog of the band is now available for streaming, the English rock band announced on it’s website and social media.

It’s officially #DefLeppardDay! For the first time EVER stream & download our entire catalog globally.” the band posted on Twitter. The band’s catalog is now available for streaming and download on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon, Pandora and many other digital platforms.

Def Leppard is one of the world’s best-selling artists, having sold more than 100 million records. In 1987, they released their fourth album which would become their best-selling album to date “Hysteria.” The album spawned seven hit singles including their lone chart topper, the power ballad “Love Bites.” They remain one of the only five rock bands with two original studio albums that sold over 10 million in the U.S.

The band’s sentiments about streaming platform wasn’t always a positive one. They were one of the major artists opposed to streaming and were on holdout for a long time. Back in 20015, lead singer Joe Elliott remained ambivalent about the streaming format. “When you get on Spotify, it’s very insular. Which the whole industry has become. Everybody is on headphones now. It’s just Zombieland, and we’re all guilty of it,” says Elliott in an interview with Maxim.

Since then, a lot has changed with the band. As noted by Billboard, the band was at odds with former label Mercury Records over licensing and compensation, but later resolved their digital song rights with Universal Records.

The streaming space have also seen the likes of the Beatles and Prince finally embracing the platform in recent years.

The announcement couldn’t be more perfect as the band is set to co-headline a North American tour with another 1980s staple Journey this coming summer.

Kendrick Lamar and SZA Release Their First Single for Black Panther

Eric Gasa

Top Dawg – Aftermath –
Interscope

Kendrick Lamar and SZA have both had a great 2017; Lamar, fresh off the success of his record DAMN, and six wins at the VMAs now has a sneaker line in tow, while labelmate SZA celebrates five Grammy nominations for her first mainstream success, the sultry R&B release, CTRL. The pair jet-sets into 2018 with an even greater start as the musical genius behind one of the most anticipated movies of the year, Black Panther.

Lamar’s label, Top Dawg Entertainment announced that it would be overseeing the soundtrack with the help of director Ryan Coogler.

“I’m truly honored to contribute my knowledge of producing sound and writing music alongside Ryan and Marvel’s vision,” said Lamar in a press release.
Coogler is best known for his award-winning 2015 movie, Creed which pitted Michael B. Jordan in a dramatic take on the Rocky series. Black Panther, much like Creed, flips the script for black audiences with an exclusively African-American cast and fresh take on the Marvel Universe.

The film wears its cultural heritage on its sleeve, starring Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, battling for the future of Wakanda against Creed’s Michael B. Jordan. Capes and hammers have been traded out for African aesthetics and costumes designed by Ruth Carter. Forest Whitaker, Angela Basset, and Lupita Nyong’o also share their names among the credits.

Of course, topping the project are the towering hip-hop singles from Lamar and SZA. The first salvo from the soundtrack, “All The Stars” is a bumping anthem for the silver screen. Dark, synth-y, and nocturnal, the song sounds like a single from SZA’s own CTRL; her voice pierces the veil with the thump of a drum machine while Lamar unloads a verse fit for a superhero: “Tell me what you gonna do to me/ Confrontation ain’t nothing new to me/ You can bring a bullet, bring a sword, bring a morgue/ But you can’t bring the truth to me.”

SZA’s elastic voice floats, sashays, and sails throughout the chorus, “All the stars are closer, all the stars are closer,” she sings. At its core, “All The Stars” is a song about love and determination.

Even if Black Panther doesn’t live up to they hype, despite already beating Captain America: Civil War as the most preordered Marvel film ever, it’s sure to have the greatest sound of any superhero movie out there.

As Black Panther pounces on the bad guys he’ll have hip-hop greatness at his back.
