Actors and Industry Pay Tribute To Richard Donner

By Creative Media Times

Richard Donner

Richard Donner is greatly responsible for inspiring modern superhero movies with the success of Superman in 1978, and nearly a decade later for the buddy cop formula with Lethal Weapon. Both went on to become hugely successful film franchises, and together with classics The Goonies, The Omen, Maverick, Scrooged and a few others, Donner helped the development of Hollywood blockbuster industry.

Last Wednesday, it was film industry’s turn to honor the director as The Academy of Motion Picture Art and Sciences held the special ceremony in Los Angeles to honor Donner for all of his work.

But even with success, it was his kindness and generosity that people most remember. “There’s a true humility about the man; he refers to himself as a traffic cop, but he’s a f**ng genius,” says Mel Gibson, who played Martin Riggs in the Lethal Weapon series. “He has a voice that gets the attention of people getting on the bus two blocks away,” said John Savage (Inside Moves).

Also present during the tribute were DC Films president Geoff Johns and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, sharing the stage and retelling how they got their start in Hollywood working for Donner. “Dick and his wife Lauren gave me my first unpaid job in Hollywood, my first part-time in Hollywood, my first full time job in Hollywood, and my first producing credit, of which is the only reason I’m standing here,” Feige said, also calling Superman: The movie “the archetype of the perfect superhero film origin story.”

TV’s Batman Adam West, Dies at 88

By AI Creative Media

Adam West as Batman. ABC Television

Adam West, iconic actor who starred in the popular “Batman” TV show in the 1960s, died Friday night Jun 9 in Los Angeles. He was 88. According to Variety, the actor “died after a short battle with leukemia.”

“Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero,” his family said in a statement.

Although West’s career spanned seven decades, it was the Batman role that made him a household name, a role that is both a blessing and a curse as he fell victim to being typecast long after the show ended. The campy superhero show ran from 1966 to 1968 on BC, while a feature-length film version was released in 1966.

He would later often reprise his Batman or Bruce Wayne role in various animated tv shows such as The New Adventures of Batman, Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show, The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians and for the tv special Legends of the Superheroes.

In 2012, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located in front of the Guinness Museum in Hollywood, California.

West is survived by his wife of 46 years Marcelle Lear. They had four children together, two from previous marriage to Ngahra Frisbie.

His family released the following statement: Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight, and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He will be missed.

Pixar’s ‘Coco’: New Trailer And Poster

By Creative Media Times

Disney/Pixar’s Coco

Disney and Pixar just released a new trailer for ‘Coco’, the studio’s latest eye-candy and the second Pixar film of 2017 following the upcoming Cars 3. This follows the teaser attached to ‘Beauty and the Beast’ a few months ago, which focused on the music and introduced the look of the film. And now we have a full trailer.

Some might recall a similar film, that of 2014’s Jorge R. Gutierrez directed “The Book of Life” from 20th Century Fox, another 3D animated musical fantasy featuring a characterwho embarks on the afterlife on the Day of the Dead. That was a modest hit, grossing nearly $100 from $50 production cost.

With both Disney and Pixar’s brand behind the film, and one of the highest profile release dates of the year, ‘Coco’ would have no trouble at the boxoffice.

‘Coco’ follows Miguel (voiced by newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) as he search for his dream of becoming a successful musician but ends up in the Land of the Dead. Along the way, he meets a trickster named Hector (Gael García Bernal), and together they set off on an epic adventure. Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Edward James Olmos, Ana Ofelia Murguía, Jaime Camil, and Sofía Espinosa are also providing their voices to the film.

The trailer is colorful and whimsical, as one might expect from both Pixar and Disney. Even with Miguel being surrounded by a cast of animated skeletons and restless spirits from the afterlife, the trailer still manage to highlight the comedy and fun aspects of the film.

Directed by Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3) with co-director by Adrian Molina who also wrote the script, Coco is scheduled to open on thanksgiving weekend November 22, 2017.

First Trailer For Action Thriller “American Made”

By Creative Media Times

Universal Pictures

Tom Cruise has an exciting new movie trailer this week and it shows the actor in flight gone awry. No, we’re not talking about The Mummy, which happens to land in cinemas this week.

Universal/Comcast Corp. just released a new trailer for ‘American Made’, Cruise’s latest film which reunites Cruise with director Doug Liman following their 2014 collaboration in the action sci-fi ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’.

Based on the trailer, “American Made” sits somewhere in the middle of what we might come to expect from a Cruise film, somewhat a break from his franchise driven, action-hero roles the past few years. Described as a crime thriller, the film is hinged on a more serious true to life subject matter, that of Barry Seal (Tom Cruise). Seal was a TWA pilot hired by the Medellin Cartel as a pilot and drug smuggler later imprisoned for a decade. Both a smuggler and informant, he run covert operations for the CIA against the Sandinista government in Nicaragua.

Shot on location in Colombia, the film had a few setbacks during filming after a plane crash killed two people and injured a crew member. “American Made” hits theaters on September 29, and also stars Sarah Wright, Domhnall Gleeson, and Jayma Mays.

Everyone Is A Suspect in “Murder On The Orient Express” Trailer

Murder on the Orient Express. 20th Century Fox

By Creative Media Times

20th Century Fox has released the trailer for the Kenneth Branagh’s new film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s 1934 classic novel, and it’s packed full of stars stranded on a snowbound train. And they’re all suspects for the murder.

This is the third time that Hollywood is taking on the story of well-groomed detective Hercule Poirot (Branagh) investigating the murder of business tycoon Ratchett (Johnny Depp) while aboard the Orient Express train.

The first look on the film in a recent EW article mentions some intriguing updates to the story, possibly more sinister and darker take than the whodunit mystery of the past versions. “I think we’re making a scarier film than people might imagine,” said Branagh.

Though similarly in his version of the story in 1974, director Sidney Lumet recruited some of the biggest star of that time including Sean Connery, Albert Finney, and Lauren Bacall. This time around, joining Depp and Branagh are Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Willem Dafoe, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley, Olivia Colman, Josh Gad, Leslie Odom Jr., Lucy Boynton and Derek Jacobi.

‘Express’ is scheduled for release later this year, Nov. 10.

‘Edge of Tomorrow” Sequel Will Focus on Characters, Says Direct Liman

By Creative Media Times

Warner Bros.

‘Edge of Tomorrow” was a modest hit in 2014. From its $178 million production budget, the film ended its theatrical run with $100 million domestically, though faring slightly better internationally with $270 million. So its only fitting that the sequel will focus on what made the movie great: the characters and the story. This is precisely what director Doug Liman envision on the follow-up, which will bring back original cast Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt into the time-loop sci-fi.

In an interview with MTV HSC Podcast, the director revealed that the ‘Tomorrow’ sequel will go against expectations and will be smaller production.

“I think what people tend to do with sequels is they just make them bigger. And I’m like, ‘No, a sequel should be smaller.’ You did the first film as sort of the ad campaign for the sequel, so now you don’t need as much action, and in the case of Edge of Tomorrow, people obviously loved the comedy and they loved the situation. So we can do way more focus on Tom’s character and Emily Blunt’s character, and there’s a third character in the sequel that’s gonna for sure steal the movie. We can focus on that. I don’t need an action sequence every two minutes.”

Godzilla Vs. Kong Finds A Director

By Creative Media Times

Kong Skull Island, Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. is full speed ahead with its MonsterVerse series. Per Hollywood Reporter, Adam Wingard “has closed a deal to helm Godzilla vs. Kong.”

Wingard recently helmed last year’s found footage supernatural horror film “Blair Witch”, which he also co-produced. Prior to that, he directed genre film “The Guest” (2014), and “You’re Next (2011).

Given such filmography, Godzilla Vs. Kong is a huge departure for Wingard, literally the big monster hugely budgeted film of his career. Last March’s Kong: Skull Island had a reported budget of $185 million, ultimately grossing $565 million at the box-office.

The franchise is a collaboration between Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros.

Godzilla vs. Kong will be the fourth film, presumably the pinnacle film in the shared cinematic franchise featuring Godzilla and King Kong which started with Godzilla (2014), and was followed by last march’s Kong: Skull Island. Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the third film in the series, is scheduled for release on March 22, 2019.

By Creative Media Times

Warner Bros.

Its been a long road for the Amazonian princess to the big screen, more than 75 years since her debut in All Star Comics# 8 in 1941, but now the time has finally arrived.

The review embargo on Wonder Woman has just been lifted Monday, and based on early feedback, it seems fans and comics geeks have a lot to celebrate. As of Tuesday morning, the movie has a 97% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.com with 58 reviews in. The critics consensus is that the movie is “thrilling, earnest, and buoyed by Gal Gadot’s charismatic performance, Wonder Woman succeeds in spectacular fashion.”

Cath Clarke from Time Out boldly compares the movie with ‘Indiana Jones’, describing Wonder Woman as “a rollicking action adventure… with a fully functioning sense of humour and the year’s most lip-smackingly evil baddie.”

The review from Entertainment Weekly‘s Chris Nashawaty is just as positive, gushing that “Wonder Woman is smart, slick, and satisfying in all of the ways superhero films ought to be.”
