Fincher Digs Deep In “Mindhunter” Trailer

By Armando

Netflix

The latest trailer for director David Fincher’s Mindhunter has been released, ahead of its debut on Netflix on October 13, 2017. Produced by Fincher and actress Charlize Theron, the drama series is based on Mark Olshaker and John E. Douglas’s book “Mind Hunter: Inside The FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit“.

In the new series, Jonathan Groff plays Holden Ford, an FBI special agent for the agency’s Behavioral Science Unit who interviews imprisoned serial killers in an effort to understand what goes on in a killer’s mind and how they operate.

He is joined by Holt McCallany who plays Bill Tench, and together they pioneer criminal psychology and profiling in its early days of development, and use their research findings to solving ongoing murder investigations.

Set to Talking Heads’ “Psychokiller,” the trailer shows the duo meet Edmund Kemper, also known as the “Coed Killer,” all the while arguing and worrying if their superiors will discover their activities. “Certainly our goal is to be preemptive,” Holden says to Bill. “We’re the FBI, Holden. That is not our goal. Yet,” says Bill.

The book’s author Douglas, himself a notable name in the history of criminal profiling, is the basis of the character Ford, which guarantees some interesting insider stories. He was also previously an inspiration for the Jack Crawford character which appeared in Thomas Harris’ novels such as The Silence of the Lambs. The character was played in the movie of the same name by Scott Glenn.

Netflix seem to have a lot of confidence in what Fincher and co. has crafted that they already renewed it for Season 2. Not surprising since Fincher himself directed Mindhunter’s pilot episode, as he did successfully with Netflix’ House of Cards. It also certainly helps that chronicling characters pursuing killers is familiar turf to Fincher (“Se7en” and “Zodiac” come to mind.)

See Mindhunter’s trailer and official synopsis below:

In the late 1970s two FBI agents expand criminal science by delving into the psychology of murder and getting uneasily close to all-too-real monsters.

“Karate Kid” TV Sequel Coming To YouTube Red

By Creative Media Times

Columbia Pictures

The original cast of the “Karate Kid” franchise is back, this time in a 10-episode half-hour comedy currently titled “Cobra Kai”, via streaming subscription service YouTube Red. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series premieres in 2018.

YouTube Red outbid streaming giants Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and AMC for the series. On Friday, Susanne Daniels, global head of content for YouTube also announced that the company is ““targeting an 18-49 audience”, indicating the company’s expansion beyond its millennial core users and its growing focus for original content.

The series will reunite original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka and will be set 30 years after the events of the 1984 “The Karate Kid”. That film launched the career of Macchio, who played the lead Daniel LaRusso in two more sequels until the series was revamped in 1994. Zabka appeared in the original as Johnny Lawrence, the main antagonist to the title character.

Macchio and Zabka will co-executive produce the series along with duo Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who will write the script with Josh Heald. Hurwitz and Schlossberg will direct most of the series.

Review: S-Town Podcast

Elizabeth Walker

Fans who have been longing for the return of the NPR podcast Serial now have something to ease their withdrawals. The new podcast S-Town debuted March 28 and is already creating a buzz.

S-Town is from the same producers as Serial and This American Life. While Serial tried to untangle a single, complicated mystery by releasing one episode each week, S-Town released all seven episodes at once. Many listeners immediately binged.

“S-Town” is short for Shittown, the nickname given to Bibb County, Alabama, by one of its residents, John B. McLemore. “John B.,” as everyone calls him is an eccentric genius who lives with his mother.

Major brands pull out of Youtube

By Armando

It has not been a good week for Google lately. This week, major advertisers are pulling their products from appearing in Youtube over the issue of their ads appearing alongside undesirable content posted in the video-sharing platform.

Last Monday, Google apologized to ad clients for the video content fiasco, but that did not seem to stop the defections. By Friday, Starbucks, PepsiCo, and General Motors among others say they are suspending Google non-search ads. This follows several other companies such as AT&T, Verizon, Johnson & Johnson, Volkswagen and many others which have either pulled or suspended their ads earlier this week.

Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion in 2006, in what was seen by many as a risky investment. Since then YouTube has become the leading site for online video, and one of most visited sites on the internet alongside Google and Facebook. From professionally produced content to vapid home videos, the site runs the gamut of shared videos online.

YouTube now has over a billion users, almost one-third of all people on the Internet, and 300 hours of video are uploaded every minute, making the task of moderating ad placements daunting, near impossible from sheer volume of uploads alone.

In fairness to Google, the company seem to be addressing the issue directly, and is implementing new changes this week, including a new video verification process. Some might remember, Facebook also had it’s fixes and update on metrics and reporting late last year.

Advertising is one of the core businesses for Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company. Although a potential headache for Google, YouTube ads represents only a small fraction of Alphabet revenue. Last October, Susan Wojcicki, Youtube CEO said the video site is still in investment mode.

CONFIRMED: Man Interrogated By FBI For Wearing Prescription Google Glass At The Movies (GOOG)

by Jim Edwards

A man who went to the movies with his wife in Columbus, Ohio, was subjected to a terrifying hour-long interrogation by the FBI because employees at the AMC theater saw him wearing Google Glass.

They apparently thought he might be illegally taping the film and didn’t believe him when he tried to explain that the glasses were prescription, and weren’t even switched on.

The incident ought to make Glass wearers think twice about when and where they don their smart spectacles. (It also shows how feeble law enforcement’s knowledge of the new device is, too — it took them an hour before they figured out how to download the device’s content.)

AMC confirmed the incident in a statement to Business Insider:

Movie theft is something we take very seriously, and our theater managers contact the Motion Picture Association of America anytime it’s suspected that someone may be illegally recording content on screen. While we’re huge fans of technology and innovation, wearing a device that has the capability to record video is not appropriate at the movie theatre.
