Gabriel Byrne Confronts Mortality and Leonard Cohen’s Ghosts in Death of a Ladies’ Man

The film follows Samuel O’Shea (Byrne), a hard-drinking, twice-divorced professor whose life unravels after a terminal diagnosis. Haunted by visions of his long-dead father (Brian Gleeson) and strangers breaking into Leonard Cohen songs, Samuel retreats to his family’s Irish cottage where he confronts memory, regret, and the possibility of redemption through an unexpected romance (Jessica Paré).

The film blends dark humor, poetic visuals, and the music of Leonard Cohen, offering a meditation on mortality and second chances. Rounding out the cast are Antoine Olivier Pilon, Karelle Tremblay, and Suzanne Clément.

Marc Silvestri Relaunches The Darkness With New Ongoing Series at Image/Top Cow

the-darknessMarc Silvestri is bringing back one of his most iconic creations. The Image Comics co-founder and Top Cow Productions CEO will relaunch The Darkness this December with a new ongoing series, nearly 30 years after its debut.

Silvestri, who co-created the supernatural anti-hero Jackie Estacado in 1996, teams with artist Ed Benes (Birds of Prey) for the first issue, with Raymond Gay (Gunslinger Spawn) taking over interiors from issue #2. The book will also feature inks by Matt “Batt!” Banning, Sal Regla and John Livesay, colors by Arif Prianto, and lettering by Troy Peteri.

Variant covers from Silvestri, Benes, and David Mack will launch alongside collector editions, including sketch variants and signed art editions.

Originally a breakout hit in the ’90s, The Darkness spawned spin-offs, crossovers, and two video game adaptations, cementing its status as a Top Cow flagship. The new series returns to Jackie Estacado, a mafia hitman cursed with dominion over creatures from another realm, as supernatural forces clash in a morally gray war.

“This isn’t just nostalgia,” Silvestri said. “It’s a reinvention. We’re going back to what made The Darkness a hit, but turning everything up to eleven.”

The Darkness #1 will release in December in comic shops and across digital platforms.

EC Comics’ Shiver SuspensStories Returns with Holiday Horror Anthology at Oni Press

Oni Press and William M. Gaines Agent, Inc. are bringing back EC Comics’ Shiver SuspensStories this winter with a new 56-page issue set for release on December 10.

Shiver SuspensStories 2 #1 continues the holiday-themed revival of the classic anthology, featuring new tales from writers David M. Booher (Canto), Melissa Flores (Biker Mice from Mars), George Northy (Yuletide), and Ben H. Winters (Benjamin). Artists contributing include Lukas Ketner (Count Crowley), Sami Kivelä (Abbott), Leomacs (Benjamin), and Dan McDaid (Shazam!).

The oversized issue also includes a newly restored EC classic alongside a mix of horror shorts blending seasonal satire with the publisher’s signature dark humor.

Variant covers for the release will come from Dustin Weaver, Adam Hughes, Shawn McManus, and Rian Hughes.

Shiver SuspensStories 2 #1 arrives in comic shops December 10.

Robert Redford, Hollywood Icon and Architect of Independent Cinema, Dies at 89

Robert Redford, the Oscar-winning actor, director, and visionary who built Sundance into the home of independent film, has died at his home in Utah. He was 89. Redford was first known as one of Hollywood’s most magnetic leading men, but his greatest impact came later, as he reshaped the future of filmmaking by giving independent voices a place to be heard.

Redford began his career in television and on Broadway before breaking through in film. His first leading role that brought him recognition was Barefoot in the Park (1967) opposite Jane Fonda. Two years later, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) made him a household name. His pairing with Paul Newman became one of the most beloved duos in film history. They reunited in The Sting (1973), which became a massive hit and earned Redford an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

An American Icon

In the 1970s, Redford wasn’t just a star. With his blond hair, windswept style, and natural charisma, he became a cultural symbol of American masculinity. But he quickly proved he was more than an image. In The Candidate (1972), Jeremiah Johnson (1972), Three Days of the Condor (1975), and All the President’s Men (1976), he pursued stories with political and social weight. By the end of the decade, he had become both a top box office draw and one of the most respected actors of his generation.

Behind the Camera

In 1980, Redford made his directing debut with Ordinary People, a family drama that went on to win four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film marked his transformation from leading man to accomplished filmmaker and proved he could command just as much respect behind the camera.

James Beard Winner Eric Wolfinger’s Doc Short “Blessed by Grace” Spotlights Chef Lisa Dahl, Expands Festival Run

The film, which tells the story of Sedona chef and restaurateur Lisa Dahl, premiered at the Sedona International Film Festival in March and has since won the Indiana Spotlight Award and Audience Choice Award at Indy Shorts. Upcoming stops include the Newport Beach Film Festival, Burning Man’s Playa Film Festival, the Cordillera Film Festival in Reno, and the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis.

Blessed by Grace traces Dahl’s personal and professional journey after the tragic loss of her son, Justin, in the 1990s. Channeling grief into her culinary career, she went on to build the Dahl Restaurant Group, now operating six acclaimed restaurants in Northern Arizona and employing more than 300 people.

The film highlights Dahl’s resilience, spirituality, and impact on the culinary world, while also capturing her broader philanthropic initiatives.

“Darling” 4K Restoration to Open at Film Forum for 60th Anniversary Run

darlingJohn Schlesinger’s Darling (1965), starring Julie Christie, Dirk Bogarde, and Laurence Harvey, returns to the big screen in a new 4K restoration for its 60th anniversary. The bittersweet satire of Swinging London will screen at Film Forum in New York from October 10 to October 23.

The film, which helped define the British New Wave, earned five Academy Award nominations, winning Best Actress for Christie, Best Original Screenplay for Frederic Raphael, and Best Costume Design for Julie Harris. Christie’s performance as ambitious model Diana Scott launched her to international stardom.

Darling also earned four BAFTAs and three New York Film Critics Circle Awards, cementing its place as a cultural landmark of the 1960s.

‘Primitive War’ Sets VOD Release October 3 via Samuel Goldwyn Films

Primitive-WarSamuel Goldwyn Films will release Primitive War on VOD platforms October 3, following a limited U.S. theatrical run in August that saw sold-out screenings and strong audience response.

Directed by Luke Sparke (Occupation), the dinosaur Vietnam War thriller stars Ryan Kwanten (True Blood), Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica), Nick Wechsler (The Boys), and Jeremy Piven (Entourage). Based on Ethan Pettus’ novel, the film follows a special forces unit sent on a search-and-rescue mission in 1968 Vietnam, only to discover a hidden valley crawling with prehistoric predators.

The project drew attention earlier this year at San Diego Comic-Con, where Sparke and the cast appeared in Ballroom 20 to preview footage for fans, a rare showcase for an independent production.

“Primitive War grossed over a million dollars in its limited U.S. release with a 90% audience Popcornmeter and positive reactions across social media,” SGF president Peter Goldwyn said in announcing the VOD rollout.

Primitive War will be available digitally across North America starting October 3.

Eric Roberts and Kenzie Ziegler Hit the Right Notes in Redemption Drama Shakey Grounds

The 82-minute feature follows a troubled musician and his band as they navigate personal demons and a chance at redemption with a disgraced record executive. Together, they confront obstacles that ultimately draw them closer through music and camaraderie.

The film stars Academy Award nominee Eric Roberts (Runaway Train, The Dark Knight), Emmy and Tony Award winner Eric Nelsen (1883), Ella Cannon (Trees of Peace), Emmy Award winner Kelly Thiebaud (General Hospital), and singer/actor Kenzie Ziegler (Dance Moms). Johnny Danks, who also stars, produced alongside Gary Dankner and Jack Sattin.

Written by Trace Slobotkin and directed by Michael Garcia, Shakey Grounds had its world premiere at WorldFest Houston International Festival, where it won a Remi Award.

Barry Avrich Doc The Road Between Us Sets October Release After TIFF Premiere

Barry Avrich’s latest documentary, The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue, will open in more than 125 theaters across North America on October 3 following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The film recounts the extraordinary true story of retired Israeli general Noam Tibon, who on October 7, 2023, drove across a country under attack to rescue his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren from terrorists. Blending firsthand testimony with tense, thriller-like pacing, the film retraces Tibon’s 10-hour mission through ambushes and roadblocks on one of Israel’s darkest days.

The TIFF premiere at Roy Thomson Hall received multiple standing ovations, with Avrich, producer Mark Selby, and Tibon himself participating in a post-screening Q&A. The release is backed by The Impact Series, which supports social-issue films aimed at sparking awareness and conversation.

Distributed by Forston Consulting in the U.S. and Cineplex Pictures in Canada, The Road Between Us opens October 3.

Justin Long and Kate Bosworth Face Survival Horror in Colin Minihan’s Coyotes, Opening October 3

coyotes-filmAura Entertainment will release the horror-comedy Coyotes in theaters nationwide on October 3. The film, directed by Colin Minihan (Grave Encounters), stars Justin Long (Barbarian) and Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns), marking the couple’s latest on-screen collaboration.

Set in the Hollywood Hills, the story follows a family trapped in their home as a wildfire rages outside and a pack of aggressive coyotes closes in. Alongside Long and Bosworth, the ensemble includes Katherine McNamara (Shadowhunters), Brittany Allen (What Keeps You Alive), Mila Harris (Mary), and Norbert Leo Butz (A Complete Unknown).

The project combines elements of eco-horror with survival thriller, playing on real-life urban-wildlife encounters against the backdrop of climate-related disaster. Brittany Allen also composed the score.

Coyotes will first screen at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX, on September 20 before its theatrical debut.
