The Avengers smashes past Dark Shadows, and the $1bn mark at the global box office. It’s really doing quite well.
We suspect that it’s safe to call Marvel and Joss Whedon’s The Avengers movie a hit now. This past weekend, it topped the American box office for the second week running, bringing in a staggering $103.1m in the US alone. It comfortably edged out the week’s big new release, Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, which had to be content with $28.8m.
The Avengers now stands at $373m in the US, making it the 18th biggest film of all time at the American box office in less than two weeks. Our guess for its final American total is at least $500m, given the fact that the film doesn’t have anything in the way of direct competition until Men In Black 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man roll around.
Also this past weekend, the film cruised past the $1bn mark at the global box office, only the 12th film ever to do so. The Avengers’ total in a little over two weeks now stands at $1,002.1m. It’s unlikely that the film will get to Avatar levels ($2.7bn), but at the very least, we’d expect it to motor past the final Harry Potter film to become the third biggest film of all time. It might yet become only the third film to break $2bn at the global box office.
