The Suicide Squad cast has officially been announced by writer-director James Gunn on Friday, and it comes with a few exciting surprises.
The director took to Twitter to announce the list which features a few original cast members reprising their roles including Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Viola Davis as Squad mastermind Amanda Waller, and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag.
Joining this time around are John Cena, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, Idris Elba, Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson, Gunn’s brother Sean Gunn and Nathan Fillion, who Gunn directed in the 2006 horror film Slither.
Conspicuous missing are Jared Leto and Will Smith, who played Floyd Lawton / Deadshot and The Joker respectively in the original film.
However, as the director revealed the cast, it also comes with a caveat: “Don’t get too attached,” says “Guardians of the Galaxy” director. What this means exactly on the lineup and the characters they’re set to play remains to be seen.
The Suicide Squad is set for release on August 6, 2021.
