First Look At Darren Aronfosky’s “Mother!”

By Creative Media Times

Paramount Pictures

Writer-director Darren Aronofsky is back to his dark psychological horror/thriller turf with “Mother!” starring Jennifer Lawrence, and we finally have a first look at what the director and his star has been up to.

The creepy teaser starts with Lawrence wandering around an empty house with mysterious voices of various characters heard in the background. The teaser then ended with intense quick cuts of Michelle Pfeiffer and Javier Bardem as well as horrifying images that suggests something ominous and sinister is about to happen.

Written by Darren Aronofsky, the cast also includes Ed Harris, Kristen Wiig, Domhnall Gleeson and Brian Gleeson. As the film is kept under wraps, not a lot is known about its plot. Paramount’s official synopsis for the film reads: “A couple’s relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.”

As announced on the end of the teaser, there will be a full trailer next week, August 8.

Known for his mind-bending films such as Black Swan, The Fountain, and Requiem for a Dream, Aronofsky last directed the Biblical epic turned Hollywood blockbuster “Noah” with Russell Crowe in the title role.

“Mother!” will be premiering at the 74th Venice International Film Festival before it’s scheduled theatrical release on September 15, 2017.

First Look At Domino in “Deadpool 2”

By Creative Media Times

Deadpool 2
20th Century Fox

Ryan Reynolds today shared on twitter a first look of Zazie Beetz as Domino in Deadpool 2.

The image recalls Ryan Reynold’s first photo as Deadpool, with the character lying near a fireplace, only here Domino is lying on a deflated Deadpool suit instead of a bear rug. “Some people just know how to work a red carpet,” Reynolds tweeted along with the photo.

This makes it a parody of a parody, as Ryan Reynolds’ original photo itself is a hilarious nod to a famous 1972 Cosmopolitan photo of Reynolds…Burt Reynolds that is.

Domino is a mercenary mutant with the ability to manipulate luck through telekinetics. She is also a member of the mutant team X-Force, and a love interest of Cable, also appearing in the movie as played by Josh Brolin. Well, in case you don’t know, Brolin himself has recently been sharing his epic transformation on Instagram.

Directed by David Leitch, from a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Deadpool 2 also stars Morena Baccarin, T. J. Miller, Leslie Uggams, Brianna Hildebrand and Jack Kesy.

Deadpool 2 has been filming in Vancouver and is set for release in theater on next year’s summer on June 1st, 2018.

Book Review: The Shadow Land

By Elizabeth Walker

If you don’t know a lot about the history of post-war Eastern Europe, prepare to be drawn in. Elizabeth Kostova’s newest novel is set in Bulgaria, both in the forties/fifties and new millennium. The Shadow Land tells two stories in parallel – one about a violinist named Stoyan Lazarov, another about a recent college graduate – and interweaves them in a masterful tale of grief, mystery, and adventure.

Alexandra is in her early twenties and has lived the past decade in the shadow of her brother’s untimely death. In attempt to both escape Jack’s memory and yet also become closer to it, she chooses to teach English in Bulgaria. On her first day in this foreign land, she crosses paths with a family en route to bury the ashes of Stoyan Lazarov. When Alexandra mistakenly picks up the ashes, she becomes a player in Stoyan’s fascinating story. She makes friends with Bobby, a philosopher poet, and together they travel across the country trying to unravel the intricacies of Stoyan Lazarov’s life and return the ashes to the family.

Most readers will be familiar with the horrific stories of Hitler’s concentration camps, but many remain oblivious to the violence inflicted on political prisoners under other administrations. The Shadow Land gives gruesome depictions of the pain and disease these people experience often based only on trumped-up charges. The fact that these atrocities are experienced by a gifted musician only serve to make them more ghastly.

The Shadow Land does drag at times. The way Kostova describes Alexandra’s grief does not seem wholly believable, and it is easy to be exhausted by the cyclic, repetitive nature of Alexandra and Bobby’s search for the Lazarov family. Essentially they spend hundreds of pages going to a place, not finding the Lazarovs, and going somewhere else.

That said, Kostova has obviously painstakingly researched her setting and has woven an intricate mystery comparable to her debut novel, The Historian. This makes the reader want to stick with The Shadow Land, despite its length, less to find out what happens to Alexandra than to the gifted musician and the family who want to offer him eternal peace.

Creepy New “IT” Trailer Gives Another Glipse Of Pennywise The Clown

By Creative Media Times

Warner Bros. Pictures

Warner Bros. unveiled a new trailer for “It” during San Diego’s Comic Con last week and now it’s been released for everyone to see.

The new trailer focuses more on the horror and scares which Pennywise The Clown will bring with him. While the last trailer established the cast and an 80s inspired setting, it also provided a good build up to this new creepy trailer, which showcases the very first time that we are hearing the menacing evil clown speak.

The film’s first trailer broke records for most views within its 24-hour period of release, illustrating just how high anticipation is for the film.

In an interesting casting choice, Swedish actor Bill Skarsgård (“Simple Simon, Allegiant, and Hemlock Grove”) plays Pennywise. The film is based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel and directed by Andrés Muschietti from a script by Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman.

“It” will be out in theaters on Sept. 8.

Woody Allen’s “Wonder Wheel” To Close New York Film Festival

By Creative Media Times

Woody Allen’s new film “Wonder Wheel” is set to close 2017 New York Film Festival, where the movie will premiere, this according to an exclusive report from Hollywood Reporter. The film will premiere at Manhattan’s Alice Tully Hall on Saturday, October 14.

The annual film festival, held annually in New York and presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center (FSLC), has been a major departure point for movies seeking early awards notice. Last year, both Manchester By The Sea and Moonlight screened during the festival; both films eventually had successful awards season journey which led to Best Picture noms at the Oscars.

Set in the 1950s, Wonder Wheel stars Kate Winslet who leads an ensemble cast which includes Juno Temple, Justin Timberlake and James Belushi. Allen also wrote the original script. Oscar-winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now) shot the film.

Allen’s movie is also in the news for another reason: “Wonder Wheel” will be distributed by Amazon, making it the online retail giant’s first solo venture into self-distribution, moving closer into establishing itself a major film studio.

Amazon has previously partnered with Lionsgate and Roadside Attraction in distributing its films, but “Wheel” will be the first movie that it will distribute on its own.

The film will go into limited release December 1.

Linkin Park Breaks Their Silence After Singer’s Death

Eric Gasa

Chester Bennington by Stefan Brending

Famed band, Linkin Park have finally broken their silence over the loss of beloved singer, Chester Bennington.

Bennington, who was 41, committed suicide on July 20 after lifelong complications with alcoholism and severe depression. The singer was found dead in his LA home by a housekeeper, after hanging himself. In a twist of fate surely not to be coincidental, Bennington ended his life on what would have been the 53rd birthday of fellow friend and Soundgarden singer, Chris Cornell, who killed himself earlier this year.

The band’s words hit close to home, waxing upon grief, disbelief, and the deep love and admiration they held for Bennington.

“Our hearts are broken. The shockwaves of grief and denial are still sweeping through our family as we come to grips with what has happened,” Linkin Park wrote.

“You touched so many lives, maybe even more than you realized. In the past few days, we’ve seen an outpouring of love and support, both public and private, from around the world. [Bennington’s wife] Talinda and the family appreciate it, and want the world to know that you were the best husband, son, and father; the family will never be whole without you.”

Nicholas Hoult Eyed To Play Young Tolkien

By Creative Media Times

Nicholas Hoult by GabboT

Nicholas Hoult is in early talks to play as author J.R.R. Tolkien in Fox Searchlight and Chernin Entertainment’s “Tolkien,” Deadline reports Tuesday.

The film will be directed by Finnish film director Dome Karukoski, from a script by Stephen Beresford and David Gleeson.

J. R. R. Tolkien was the author of the fantasy classics The Lord of the Rings, originally a sequel to his children’s fantasy The Hobbit, then later turned into three volumes The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Since then, The Lord of the Rings has become one of the best selling novels ever, and together with The Hobbit became the source for Peter Jackson’s blockbuster hit films.

According to Deadline, the film will focus on the orphaned Tolkien’s experiences during his youth on the outbreak of World War I, experiences which influenced his work on The Lord of the Rings novels.

Hoult gained recognition from his role as a divergent schoolboy Marcus Brewer in 2002’s critical and boxoffice hit About A Boy. He also played Nux in George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road and as Hank McCoy/Beast on three X-Men films (X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse). He will reprise the role in next year’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

In addition to Tolkien, Hoult seem to attract real life character roles in biographical dramas lately. Later this year, he will be playing another celebrated author J. D. Salinger in Danny Strong’s Rebel in the Rye and then as inventor Nikola Tesla in this December’s “The Current War.”
