Riz Ahmed (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) is in talks to join Sony’s upcoming Venom movie, Variety reports. Though the article mentions that Ahmed will play a “popular Marvel Comics character”, no specific details of the casting was provided. Plot details are also kept under wraps.

Ahmed recently appeared in two other major franchise films last year: the first Star Wars Anthology film, Rogue One and the fifth installment of the Bourne film series Jason Bourne.

Tom Hardy will play the title character Venom and his most well-known incarnation Eddie Brock, a journalist who is also Spider-Man’s nemesis. Venom was originally conceived as a super-villain. But the symbiote sentient alien character has since evolved into an antihero.

The movie is Sony’s first spin-off based on it’s Spider-Man franchise, but Sony has stated previously that “Venom” will be stand-alone film unrelated to the Spider-Man universe, which includes the Sony/Marvel Studios collab Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Venom is set to be directed by Ruben Fleischer from the script by Scott Rosenberg (“Jumanji”) and Jeff Pinkner (“The Dark Tower”). Venom is set to for an Oct. 5, 2018 release.

Khalid “Young Dumb and Broke” Music Video/Song Review

By Niy Birden

RCA Records

Last year brought in a wave for newcomer Khalid, a 19 year old singer from Texas who has created yet another obsession for teenagers in the popshphere, alongside the label he is signed to, RCA Records. RCA has played a very integral role in the development of teenagers in pop culture, with one of its most famous artists, Christina Aguilera, who became a powerhouse singing sensation during the 90’s.

Khalid, who is at the same age of Christina when she got her fame, has burst through the music industry door with his first charting hit “Location”, and collaboration with Logic and Alessia Cara on “1-800-273-8255” , recently came back to the charts with his “Young Dumb and Broke” single, and accompanying music video. In the song, Khalid is talking to a love interest about the beauties and inevitability of being young, dumb, and broke, but in a romantic way that makes you reminisce your own youth. The pinnacle of most teenage anthems in America.

While the first verse is a bit too fast in the sense that it gives off the entire theme of the song in just a few bars, the vocal delivery and lines themselves go perfectly together, completing the nostalgic feeling that he is trying to play to. “So you’re still thinking of me/Just like I know you should/I can not give you everything, you know I wish I could/I’m so high at the moment/I’m so caught up in this/Yeah, we’re just young, dumb and broke/But we still got love to give”.

Netflix Buys Comic Book Company Millarworld

By Armando

Netflix is following the footsteps of Disney and is delving deep into the world of comic-book franchises. Streaming giant Netflix has bought Millarworld, marking the company’s first acquisition, this according to the company’s press release.

“This is only the third time in history a major comic book company has been purchased at this level,” said Millar. “I’m so in love with what Netflix is doing and excited by their plans. Netflix is the future and Millarworld couldn’t have a better home.”

There is obvious reason for Netflix to be inspired by this purchase. In 2009, Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion, which proved to be an artistic and financial success.

Netflix has been more focused on TV series the past few years, funding original shows and acquiring original content for it’s library such as House of Cards. Though the company has picked up streaming rights for various smaller films, it started its venture into big-budget blockbusters such as later this year’s “Bright” starring Will Smith which reportedly cost $90 million to produce.

Millarworld was launched by Scottish comic book writer Mark Millar who once worked for both DC and Marvel Comics. The company has published Wanted and Kick-Ass, both of which were adapted into film. 2014’s spy-action comedy Kingsman: The Secret Service was also based on Millar’s work.

First Look At Josh Brolin As Cable Courtesy Of Ryan Reynolds

By Creative Media Times

#deadpool2

We finally have a glimpse of how Josh Brolin’s Cable will look like at next summer’s Deadpool 2 as Ryan Reynolds premiered two photos of the character today.

Fans of the character should be relieved that Cable’s intense look in the tweets is pretty faithful to the comics. Of the two images released, the close up photo (below) shows a closer look at the three scars over Cable’s eyes. The second image shows full body shot of the character while carrying plenty of ammunition.

“We all have that one, grumpy, heavily armed Uncle from the future. #PremiumCABLE #JoshBrolin,” Reynolds hilariously tweeted. Then added, “DeadPool 2: Your premium #Cable provider. #DeadPool2.”

Brolin is clearly enjoying this process and has been sharing plenty of Cable related images. A few months ago, the actor posted a photo of is entire head coated in blue gunk in preparation for production of cast to be used for special effects, then a month later posted another where he appears to be working out at the gym.

In the comics, Cable is a time travelling soldier, and the biological son of X-Men’s Cyclops and Jean Grey. He grew up as a warrior in the future where he was transported to as an infant, and then later returned to the present.

Directed by David Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde), and written by the original film’s screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Deadpool 2 will hit theaters on June 1, 2018.

Aliens, Shakespeare, and Diversity: An Interview with Sci-Fi Star, Cas Anvar

Eric Gasa

THE STRAIN — Season Four – Pictured: Cas Anvar as Sanjay Desai. CR: Russ Martin/FX

Cas Anvar’s career is part occupation, part dream come true. Not very often does a Sci-Fi nerd grow up to become a Sci-Fi actor but for the rising Anvar, he enjoys the best of both worlds. Anvar can be found in a number of roles in big titles, from Argo and the Oscar-nominated ROOM, to the galaxy’s top fighter pilot in SyFy’s, The Expanse.

I had the opportunity to chat with Anvar one afternoon in preparation of the latest episode of his FX show, The Strain, where he plays the part of the nefarious Sanjay Desai. The Strain airs this Sunday, August 6, at 10 pm EP. Though our time was brief, Anvar spared none of it when sharing his excitement for his work and what lies on the road ahead.

EG: How did you get into acting?

Cas Anvar: I’ve been doing it my whole life since I was in high school. I was introduced to acting through Shakespeare actually. Started in theatre. Went to the National Theatre School of Canada. Started my own Shakespeare company after that and have been acting ever since.

Who were some of your inspirations as a young actor?

That’s an interesting question. I really admire Liam Neeson, Hugh Jackman, and Robert Downey Jr.

Was starring in a Sci-Fi program always a dream of yours? Were you a huge Sci-Fi fan growing up?

I’ve always been a huge nerd. I grew up with sci-fi, fantasy, and horror games, comic books, and all that stuff. I went to Comic Con as a kid and never imagined that I would be on the other side of that table signing autographs one day. Playing in something like The Expanse where I get to play a Han Solo character with wisecracks and one-liners, is a huge thrill for me.

“Goodbye Christopher Robin” Trailer Shows Winnie the Pooh’s Origin

By Creative Media Times

Fox Searchlight Pictures

A. A. Milne finds his inspiration through his young son Christopher Robin Milne for his fictional anthropomorphic teddy bear Winnie-the-Pooh in the new trailer of Fox Searchlight’s “Goodbye Christopher Robin”.

Directed by Simon Curtis of My Week With Marilyn, “Goodbye Christopher Robin” stars
Domhnall Gleeson as the man who created the teddy bear character A. A. Milne, while Will Tilston is his son Christopher Robin, whose toys inspired the magical world of Winnie the Pooh. “I’d really like if you wrote a book for me. I’d definitely read it,” Christopher Robin says in the trailer.

Also in the film are Margot Robbie as A. A. Milne’s wife Daphne de Sélincourt, Kelly Macdonald as Christopher Robin’s nanny Olive, Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Mary Brown, and Alex Lawther as the older Christopher Robin.

The film shows the origin of the Pooh Bear from an author who was coping with his post-traumatic stress following his return from World War I. After the war there was so much sadness. Then ‘Winnie the Pooh’ came along,” says Ribin’s nanny Olive.

Here is the film’s official synopsis:
GOODBYE CHRISTOPHER ROBIN gives a rare glimpse into the relationship between beloved children’s author A. A. Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) and his son Christopher Robin (Will TIlston), whose toys inspired the magical world of Winnie the Pooh. Along with his mother Daphne (Margot Robbie), and his nanny Olive (Kelly Macdonald), Christopher Robin and his family are swept up in the international success of the books; the enchanting tales bringing hope and comfort to England after the First World War. But with the eyes of the world on Christopher Robin, what will the cost be to the family?

“Goodbye Christopher Robin” will be in select theaters on October 13th, 2017, with expansions planned in the succeeding weeks.

“Karate Kid” TV Sequel Coming To YouTube Red

By Creative Media Times

Columbia Pictures

The original cast of the “Karate Kid” franchise is back, this time in a 10-episode half-hour comedy currently titled “Cobra Kai”, via streaming subscription service YouTube Red. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series premieres in 2018.

YouTube Red outbid streaming giants Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and AMC for the series. On Friday, Susanne Daniels, global head of content for YouTube also announced that the company is ““targeting an 18-49 audience”, indicating the company’s expansion beyond its millennial core users and its growing focus for original content.

The series will reunite original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka and will be set 30 years after the events of the 1984 “The Karate Kid”. That film launched the career of Macchio, who played the lead Daniel LaRusso in two more sequels until the series was revamped in 1994. Zabka appeared in the original as Johnny Lawrence, the main antagonist to the title character.

Macchio and Zabka will co-executive produce the series along with duo Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who will write the script with Josh Heald. Hurwitz and Schlossberg will direct most of the series.
