Winamp Media Player Shutting Down After 15 Years

By Angela Moscaritolo

After 15 years on the Internet, the once-ubiquitous digital audio player Winamp will soon be just a memory.

According to a brief note on the Winamp website, the formerly uber-popular media player will no longer be available for download after Dec. 20, 2013. This includes Winamp.com and associated Web services.

You probably remember Winamp from the late 90s and early 2000’s when it was one of the most widely used Internet services for listening to music and radio streams. Winamp eventually lost popularity as services like iTunes and Windows Media Player hit the Web, but it’ll always hold a special place in the hearts of many.

Eurovision: Denmark’s Emmelie De Forest Wins

By MALIN RISING

Denmark’s Emmelie de Forest has won this year’s Eurovision Song Contest with her ethno-inspired flute and drum tune Only Teardrops.

There was tough competition from spectacular stage shows by performers from Azerbaijan and Ukraine.

But Bonnie Tyler, who represented Great Britain with Believe In Me, finished 19th out of the 26 acts performing in Malmo, Sweden, with 23 points.

Ireland’s entry, the dance track Only Love Survives by Ryan Dolan, came in last place with just five points.

Speaking after the votes came in, Welsh singer Tyler, 61, who topped charts around the world in her heyday, said despite her final score the experience had been “fantastic”.

She said: “I got the feeling tonight that I got at the Grammy awards. I’m sure a lot of people will be disappointed on my behalf, but I have really enjoyed my Eurovision experience.

“I did the best that I could do with a great song. I don’t feel down and I’m ready to party.

Barclays: Apple ‘is about to change the narrative’ with new products

By Brad Reed

The past few months have been tumultuous for Apple, which has seen its shares sink in value and has provided little buzz for new products ever since it launched the iPhone 5 and the iPad mini last fall. But according to Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes, Apple’s fortunes may be about to change for the better now that the company is preparing to launch several new products over the next few months that should help its shares reclaim some of the value they’ve lost.

Per Fortune, Reitzes writes that “Apple is about to change the narrative and get investors, analysts, customers and the media finally talking about new products again — starting with a software/services/Mac event on June 10th and a likely iPhone/iPad event in September.”

Daft Punk Sets Spotify Streaming Record

Daft Punk’s new song set a Spotify record on Friday.

The streaming music service said the electronic duo’s latest tune “Get Lucky” had the most streams of any track on currently available to users in the United States and the United Kingdom.

However, Spotify hasn’t released the number of streams as of this writing. In other words, you’ll just have to take their word for it.

The single, which features rapper and producer Pharrell Williams, is the first single off Daft Punk’s upcoming album Random Access Memories. The collection of tunes is the duo’s first effort since scoring director Joseph Kosinski’s underrated sci-fi flick TRON: Legacy.

The electronic group’s last album Human After All was released in 2005.

Daft Punk’s Spotify streaming record essentially takes the crown away from the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis track “Thrift Shop.” In the UK, the title previously belonged to British band Bastille and their song “Pompeii.”

Fans aren’t the only ones who have an appreciation for “Get Lucky.” Williams performed the song no less than three times at the HTC One launch party in New York.

In addition to taking Spotify by storm, Daft Punk’s new tune has also made a considerable dent on iTunes since its release early Friday morning. The track quickly rose to the top of the Top 10 Songs list. In other words, it would appear the duo has a new hit on their hands.

Earlier this week, fans were tricked into checking out a leaked version of the new single. Unfortunately for those who were anxious to check out the duo’s latest offering, the single was nothing more than a looped version of the previously-released teaser.

Random Access Memories will be available for purchase on May 21.

iTunes 11 is here at last. But will I use it?

By Chris O’Brien

Apple fans can finally stop holding their breath. At long last, iTunes 11 is here.

The latest update to the software that is now the world’s largest music retail store has been hotly anticipated since it was announced way back in September. It was supposed to land in October, but the company delayed it, citing some engineering issues that still needed to be fixed.

Finally, though, it’s here. But while many Apple fans will rush to download it, I have to confess that I’m not one of them.

It’s not that I have anything against Apple products. We now have a MacBook, iPad, two iPhones, iPod Touch and Apple TV in our house.

But in the last year I’ve almost completely stopped using iTunes. That was a big surprise to me. Getting an iPod and then iTunes in 2006 completely changed the way I bought and listened to music

Jimmy Page says ‘no’ to Led Zeppelin reunion

By JOHN CARUCCI

NEW YORK (AP) — Led Zeppelin will not be reuniting any time soon.

That message came through loud and clear Tuesday with sarcasm, stoic silence, and even the occasional barb at reporters that dared to ask. Just the mere mention of the topic set lead singer Robert Plant off at their news conference for the bands upcoming concert film, “Celebration Day.”

But at the film’s premiere later in the evening, guitarist Jimmy Page set the record straight, sort of, about a potential reunion.

“I think it’s disappointing for people when the answer is no,” Page said. But he later added: “That’s what it is now.”
