US Weekend Boxoffice top 10 (Feb. 17-19, 2012)

Safe House won the second round of boxoffice competition this weekend against The Vow, this time coming on top in a very close race over the first three days of Presidents Day Weekend. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance opened at no.3, while Journey 2: The Mysterious Island continues its surprisingly strong run at no.4. Official numbers for the 4-day weekend will be released on Tuesday.

The Artist dominates the 2012 BAFTA awards in London, Feb. 12, 2012. Widely considered a precursor to the Oscars, The Artist won six awards including Best Film, Director and Actor.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Make Directorial Debut With Sexy Comedy

Scarlett Johansson will co-star with the actor, who also wrote the screenplay.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is turning into a triple threat, venturing into big-screen writing and directing.

Gordon-Levitt will make his feature directorial debut with an untitled comedy based on a script he also wrote. He will star in the movie, with Scarlett Johansson playing one of the two major female roles.

Plotlines are not being revealed other than it centers on “a modern day Don Juan and his journey to become less of a selfish dick,” according to Gordon-Levitt’s publicist.

Financing is coming from Voltage Pictures, which is selling international rights in Berlin. Ram Bergman will produce for Ram Bergman Productions in association with hitRECord Films.

Production is set to start in Los Angeles on April 16.

US Weekend Boxoffice top 10 (Feb. 10-12, 2012)

Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum romance vehicle The Vow led the pre-Valentines Day weekend, as Safe House opens strong in second place. Two other debuts, Warner Brothers’ “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” and and George Lucas’ 3-D version of “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” also strong.
