The Artist dominates the 2012 BAFTA awards in London, Feb. 12, 2012. Widely considered a precursor to the Oscars, The Artist won six awards including Best Film, Director and Actor.

Whitney Houston Dead at 48

Whitney Houston has died, her rep confirms to The Hollywood Reporter.

At a news conference, police officials said they received a call at 3:23 p.m. Saturday saying that someone was unconscious at the Beverly Hilton. Emergency crews summoned to the scene tried to resuscitate the singer in her room on the fourth floor. Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. She was 48.

Beverly Hills Police Lt. Mark Rosen said that there were “no obvious signs of criminal intent” and that the cause of death was being investigated.

The R&B singer and six-time Grammy winner was due to make an appearance at Clive Davis’s Grammy eve gala on Saturday night at the Hilton. She was spotted in the hotel on Thursday morning, when she was overheard chastising an assistant.

Later that night, Houston got into an altercation with The X Factor finalist Stacy Francis at an R&B appreciation event, where she was said to be acting “belligerent.” On Friday night, as THR broke news that Houston had been approached for a seat on the judges’ panel on The X Factor, her publicist said the singer was at a spa.

Says a source close to Davis, “This is a sad day, and it will be a sad Grammys weekend.”

“Whitney Houston was one of the world’s greatest pop singers of all time, who leaves behind a robust musical soundtrack spanning the past three decades,” Recording Academy president Neil Portnow said Saturday. ”A light has been dimmed in our music community today.”

Billboard Hot 100 Singles – Week of Feb.11, 2012

Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain” spends a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, just holding off a furious push from Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You),” which bounds from No. 8 to No. 2.

As Adele’s set 21 leads the Billboard 200 album chart for an 18th week, “Fire” tallies a second frame atop the Hot 100, fueled largely by its 5-4 advance on the Hot 100 Airplay chart (118 million audience impressions, up 12%, according to Nielsen BDS).

On the Hot Digital Songs survey, “Fire” remains at No. 2 after topping the chart two weeks ago. The song sold 167,000 downloads (down 10%) in the list’s tracking week, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
 
As announced yesterday, Adele will perform at the 54th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles Feb. 12, marking her first live performance since undergoing vocal surgery late last year.
 
Clarkson’s “Stronger” is aptly titled, as the second single from her album Stronger vaults 8-2 with Greatest Gainer/Digital honors. The song surges by 29% to 225,000 downloads sold andascends 3-1 on Hot Digital Songs, marking Clarkson’s second leader on the sales ranking. Her “My Life Would Suck Without You” spent two weeks at No. 1 on Hot Digital Songs three years ago this month.

US Weekend Boxoffice top 10 (Feb. 10-12, 2012)

Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum romance vehicle The Vow led the pre-Valentines Day weekend, as Safe House opens strong in second place. Two other debuts, Warner Brothers’ “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” and and George Lucas’ 3-D version of “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” also strong.
