Kong: Skull Island IMAX poster pays tribute to Apocalypse Now

By Armando

After the trailer’s release a couple of months ago, Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures doubles down in it’s reference to 70s war movies. Today, the new IMAX poster for the film pays tribute to one of the most iconic of them all: Apocalypse Now.

This only seem fitting given the Skull Island’s setting and the time period the story takes place in. Comparisons to Francis Ford Coppola’s classic Apocalypse Now have been made since the first trailer arrived and these new posters further reinforce the comparisons.

It remains to be seen how much inspiration Kong actually draws from Apocalypse Now, which is considered by many as a masterpiece.

As you may already know, Skull Island is part of a cinematic franchise that unites King Kong with Godzilla and other iconic giant monsters.

The movie’s producer Alex Garcia recently spoke with Cinema Blend and provides some new insight on how the events in Kong may connect with the events of 2014’s Godzilla. Garcia explains:

“If you can establish these characters in a way that feels compelling with the technology that we have today, with very distinct backdrops, where they’re coming from, they’re each established credibly in their own right, it should feel right for them to come together.”

Directed by Kings of Summer’s Jordan Vogt-Roberts, Kong stars Oscar-winner Brie Larson (Room) as a photojournalist, and Tom Hiddleston (Thor), as a former SAS officer and tracker accompanied by a military team led by Samuel L. Jackson that sets out to investigate the mysteries of Skull Island. Also stars John Goodman and John C. Reilly with an international cast which includes Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell, and Eugene Cordero.

Kong: Skull Island is set to open in theaters on March 10, 2017.

Book Review: The Spider and the Fly by Claudia Rowe

The Spider and the Fly by Claudia Rowe

Prepare to be thoroughly creeped out.

By Elizabeth Stainton

In the late nineties, an African-American outcast named Kendall Francois murdered eight women, all prostitutes. This string of crimes would be heinous enough, but the truly sickening part is that he hid the bodies in the house he shared with his parents – and his family didn’t notice because of the squalid conditions of the family home.

Meanwhile, Claudia Rowe was floating through life as a reporter, then a stringer for the New York Times. While her family was more affluent than Kendall’s, it also had years of pain and secrets, which Claudia found herself trying to escape by fleeing to Poughkeepsie, New York.

The intersection of the two lives – that of the murderer and the journalist – is what sets this book apart from so many other true crime stories. Rowe does not merely recount Kendall’s crimes, she weaves his family history together with her own upbringing, comparing and contrasting the ways insecurity manifests in each. It is a book as much about herself as it is about her subject.

Oscar Nominations Reflect Diversity in Hollywood

Oscars 2017 – Not ‘So White’ Anymore

By Elizabeth Stainton

Remember last year’s Academy Awards and the hashtag #OscarSoWhite? Not this time. This year, six black actors were nominated for their work in films that championed diversity. These films include Fences, which stars Denzel Washington and is based on August Wilson’s iconic play about African-American life in Pittsburgh.Barry Jenkins’ drama Moonlight has been nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Bond Fans might recognize Naomie Harris from her role as Moneypenny. She received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in Moonlight. Also nominated was Ruth Negga, who was recognized for her role in Loving, a film about interracial love during the Civil Rights Era. Richard and Mildred Loving were an interracial couple who were arrested for miscegenation and whose legal battle ended up in the Supreme Court.

Hidden Figures stars three dynamic African American actresses: Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe. Hidden Figures, which tells the true, little-known story of the women of color who worked at NASA during the Space Race. Spencer was nominated for best supporting actress, scoring one for intersectional feminism. That’s what is so important about these nominations.

Not only do they recognize talented black actors, but they recognize cinema work that advances the narrative in a meaningful way. It’s of particular significance this year, when the country has been deeply affected the ongoing conversation surrounding institutionalized racism, police violence, and the Black Lives Matter movement. #OscarSoDiverse
