Kesha Triumphantly Returns With “Praying”- Review

By Niy Birden

Kemosabe RCA

It has been a long, courageous fight for Kesha Rose Sebert, a.k.a Ke$ha, but now stylized as simply, Kesha. When she first came out, she was ostracized and criticized for her extensive auto-tune, party glam, drunk- girl-appropriating- cultures tone of music and imagery, and then three years ago we learned that she had been suffering from sexual abuse from her main producer Dr. Luke , who used to be the owner of Kasz only Inc., which partnered with Sony Records.

While the law dispute seems to have quieted down, Kesha’s voice definitely has not. And for good reasons, of course. If anything, her voice is more unique and louder than ever. Most people don’t know that before and during her “Tik Tok” fame in 2009, she was a singer-songwriter. So it’s actually no surprise at all that her return would not only be one to shatter her prior musical image, but it also shatters the opinions of most of her listeners. “Praying” is Kesha’s most powerful song to date. Don’t be surprised if you hear about the next singing competition winner getting their fame through use of this song. It’s that good. With its powerful chorus, whistle tone-like belt, and catchy melody, it makes you wonder what powerhouses Adele and Christina Aguilera are doing with their releases.

Premiering on July 6th as the first single from her new album “Rainbow”, Kesha actually released her new golden song with an interesting music video, filled with religious symbolism, oddly-masked men, and her walking around a very large outside environment, doing a ritualistic dance and prayer straight from the Indigenous people that she so often uses for accessory. While the video isn’t nearly as powerful as the song, it is classically, a very Kesha video. The most visually stunning shots, however, are the almost-still moments when the color of the video is in a black and white shot, with Kesha laying down on a surface, against a landscape of beautiful water. While the shot is supposed to be one of a solemn moment, it creates a beautiful effect on the eye. A similar scene returns at the very end of the video when she is now walking-on water, might I add- but this time, with a golden sunset played out before her. Looks like she’s been praying indeed.

Disney’s ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ Trailer Shows Plenty Of Star Power

By Creative Media Times

Walt Disney Studios

Director Ava DuVernay’s live-action adaptation of the classic science fantasy novel is mesmerizing. Disney released the new trailer during the film’s panel at D23 Expo in Anaheim, California on Saturday.

The trailer features scientist Dr. Alex Murry (Chris Pine) talking about traveling through time and space. “What if we are here for a reason? What if we are a part of something truly divine. Imagine, 91 billion light years traveled like that.” The trailer then changes pace as he snaps his fingers and the haunting cover intro of Eurythmics’ 80s hit song “Sweet Dreams” starts playing on the background.

Mrs. Which (Winfrey) then pick up the narration, explaining to Meg Murry (Storm Reid) that “your father has accomplished something extraordinary but also dangerous. He’s trapped by a darkness that’s actively spreading throughout the universe. And the only one who can stop it is you. Be a warrior.

We then see a series of fantastical end-of-the-world scenes, collapsing trees, characters falling from the sky, and disturbingly strange characters in suburban settings.

‘A Wrinkle in Time’ is based on a 1963 novel by Madeleine L’Engle. It was first adapted for a 2003 television film of the same name which, unfortunately, didn’t receive much attention.

‘A Wrinkle in Time’ stars Storm Reid, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Mindy Kaling, Deric McCabe,Levi Miller, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, André Holland, Michael Peña, Zach Galifianakis, and Oprah Winfrey.

The film opens March 9th, 2018.

JAY-Z challenges race and wealth on latest music video, “The Story of O.J.”

Eric Gasa

The Story of O.J.
Roc Nation

JAY-Z’s latest music video will be offensive to some and provocative to others; such is the essence of an artist born both in the tradition and spite of the Brooklyn projects. “The Story of O.J.”, directed by Mark Romanek and Jay himself, is as unsettling as it is campy. Jay rhymes over a sharp beat that cuts right into the heart of the post-racial myth in America.

But it’s the animated visual that makes “The Story of O.J.” all the more provoking. In it, Jay is reimagined as an offensive Disney caricature ala Jim Crow, meant to mimic vintage blackface cartoon characters. The idea isn’t exactly meant to make viewers uncomfortable but rather symbolize the antiquated views black persons still face when in the spotlight.

“O.J. like, ‘I’m not black, I’m O.J.’,” the cartoon Jay rolls his eyes and sighs, “…okay.”
Regarding the lyric, the rapper said in the 8-minute mini documentary, Footnotes for The Story of O.J., “O.J. would get a free space where he’s like ‘I’m not black, I’m O.J.’ Like Tiger Woods would say, ‘I’m above the culture,’…And that same person when he’s playing golf, and playing great, [he’s] protected. When you’re not, they’re gonna put pictures of you drunk driving and embarrass you. That world will eat you up and spit you out.”

Gary Oldman As Churchill In New Trailer For “Darkest Hour”

By Creative Media Times

Focus Features

Gary Oldman is Winston Churchill in the intense new trailer for “Darkest Hour”, Joe Wright’s upcoming political drama about Britain’s wartime prime minister, out later this year.

Ever a chameleon and versatile actor, Oldman is unrecognizable in the trailer, which shows Churchill after his appointment as Prime Minister, his decisions under the looming pressures of Nazi Germany, and the fight he instead chose to make.

Joining Oldman is a sterling cast: Ben Mendelsohn as King George VI, Kristin Scott Thomas as Churchill’s wife Clementine, Ronald Pickup as Neville Chamberlain, Stephen Dillane as Foreign Secretary Lord Halifax, and Lily James as personal secretary of Churchill Elizabeth Nel.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

A thrilling and inspiring true story begins on the eve of World War II as, within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.

Focus Features will release Darkest Hour in select cities on November 22, 2017. Watch the official trailer below:

Nick Jonas Returns, This Time With U.K. Newbie and Pop Buddy

Review: “Remember I told You”
By Niy Birden

Island – Safehouse

Dancehall, dubstep and EDM have created a whirlwind of hits for mainstream radio. This has been happening since the 70’s, but with the era of technology and live retweets, when there’s a hit, there’s a hit. For the song “Remember I Told You”, however, this hit is much more interesting due to the roster of artists featured.

Nick Jonas, the legendary ex-Jonas Brother hailing from the teenage stardom of Disney Channel, has come such a long way. From Disney rock, to young-but-still-impressionable rock, and now to R&B and Pop, Nick actually has quite the discography on his hands. While he has only managed to get genuine hits since the start of his “Chains” and “Jealous” year, the hits he make are charming, upbeat, and, if you’re like me, something that you probably wouldn’t mind listening to.

He’s managed to pair with a lot of notable names in the last few years (including Mike Posner, who joins him again for this song), but for this new release, he’s tapped into a little old school and a little new school with sorta-newcomer Anne Marie, who has her first U.S. hit this year with “Alarm” and pop heartthrob Mike Posner, who you might remember from his earlier hits “Cooler Than Me” and “Please Don’t Go”, or more recently, “I Took A Pill In Ibiza”. So what can come from two veteran artists and one newbie? Electro gold, apparently.

“The Shallows” Director Frontrunner For “Suicide Squad 2”

By Creative Media Times

Warner Bros. Pictures

Jaume Collet-Serra, who scored a hit last summer after directing the Blake Lively film The Shallows, has emerged as frontrunner to helm Warner Bros’ Suicide Squad 2, Deadline reports.

The past few months, it seemed that the studio was pursuing a few big names to helm the sequel, including Mel Gibson and David S. Goyer. So Collet-Serra is a bit of surprising choice. “The Shallows”, however, proved to be a profitable hit last summer, grossing $119 million worldwide on a modest $17 million budget, and was generally well received by critics.

Stepping aside is David Ayer, who wrote and directed the original film. Although the DCEU’s antihero film was panned by critics last year, “Squad” was a global success, grossing $745,600,054 million worldwide. This left little doubt about the sequel being green lit, and as well as a spin-off based on fan favorite Harley Quinn, tentatively “Gotham City Sirens”, with Margot Robbie reprising her role and which David Ayer set to direct.

The Spanish film director has been busy; he recently helmed “The Commuter” starring Liam Neeson, an action thriller set for release early next year. Neeson and the director are frequent collaborators, having previously worked together on action thrillers “Unknown” (2011), “Non-Stop” (2014) and “Run All Night” (2015).

Suicide Squad sequel currently have no official release date.

“The World’s Largest Music Festival,” Summerfest Photos and Performances

By Armando

Summerfest – 2017 Milwaukee, WI
summerfest.com

Milwaukee’s annual music festival lived up to its billing. In spite of heat, rain, and heavy traffic, “The World’s Largest Music Festival” undoubtedly delivered the fun, great food, big crowds and fantastic performances for 11 days on almost a dozen stages at the Henry Maier Festival Park lakefront.

Running from June 28 to July 2, and then continued on July 4 to July 9, great musical performers played from noon to midnight, bringing people from all walks of life to the beautiful city of Milwaukee, where they let go and lose themselves for awhile.

On Sunday, Summerfest came to a close on a high note with The Outlaw Music Festival at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater, featuring living legends Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan, as well as Sheryl Crow, Jason Isbell, Nathaniel Rateliff, Margo Price, and Lukas Nelson.

2017 is a landmark year for the event as it marks the 50th anniversary of the festival. When it all began in 1968, the festival was an eclectic mix of concerts, film festival, air show, and even a pageant. Since then, the event has become the famous stage for some of the world’s biggest music acts from a variety of music genres.

This year continues that tradition as festival stages featured a diverse lineup, from influential music acts Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, to current chart-toppers The Chainsmokers and Alessia Cara, and rock icons Willie Nelson and Paul Simon.

There were plenty of highs and great performances that will be remembered long after the festival is over:

A Day To Remember packed the punk punch and was certainly one of the standouts. The phenomenal band’s set had all of the excitement reverberating up to the neighboring stages, performing some of their fan favorites “Mr. Highway’s Thinking About The End,” “All I Want,” “Naivety” and “Exposed” among others. Fans packed at Harley-Davidson Roadhouse were clearly enthralled, a reception that seemed to come as a surprise even to the lead vocalist Jeremy McKinnon who thanked the fans repeatedly right until the confetti came out.

Huey Lewis And The News brought their classic hits to excited crowd, and with a huge career-spanning set in their arsenal. The festival is clearly special for both the band and fans. As seen in the Summerfest museum inside the festival grounds, the renowned band and the event have a long history together. And this time around is clearly just as special. Fans were captivated as soon as Lewis arrived on stage with harmonica in hand, his voice as strong as ever, the crowd standing throughout their 9:45pm set and reveling the band’s classic repertoire.

Rapper Slug of Atmosphere worked the stage Friday night at Harley-Davidson Roadhouse, animated and in full control of the stage. The crowd reciprocated in kind. It was so deafening at the front of the stage I had to decompress and move to the corner railings to fully absorb the band and audience symbiosis. And it was a sight to behold. The Minneapolis hip‐hop duo was definitely one of Summerfest’s most exciting nights.

One artist that caught me by surprise was a local artist IshDARR, an act I wasn’t familiar with before the event, and going to massive festival as Summerfest, that is the best kind. The young rapper was sensational being in front of a hometown crowd and he came out in force to represent, keeping fans energized throughout his 10pm set. It is these moments of discovering promising new talents is what makes festival experiences truly special.

Here’s some of the performers on various stages of 2017 Summerfest.

“Feels” Review: Calvin Harris Taps Into Groovy California Vibes With Pharrell and Friends

By Niy Birden

Sony

There’s something so timeless that comes from a feature with veteran musician Pharrell Williams. Perhaps it’s the endless influence of old school R&B? Perhaps it’s his open mindset? Or maybe it’s the fact that somehow, he really hasn’t aged at all that much? Who knows. But no one can deny: he has a certain Midas touch. He’s even managed to make a traditional EDM DJ be able to sound like a down with the culture disco-clubbing goer.

In all honesty, the only real hint of what most people know of Calvin Harris that shows in this song is actually the soundscape in the very beginning, before any voices come through. But for a DJ like Calvin, this is actually a very good thing. Like Pharrell, Calvin Harris has created a genuine career from his versatile sounds. Pharrell opens up with his classic “Hey!” and immediately the fun begins. One thing that is notable about Pharrell is that he has this impeccable way of always making the listener feel like he is talking directly to them.

The muffled organs and 4 on the floor drum beat take you right back to those early California, rap/song combo, ‘90s-2000s hits he so masterfully created, and he starts by giving you that charming talk that he usually does on collaborations: “Hey!/Well nothing ever last forever, no/One minute you’re here and the next you’re gone/So I respect you, wanna take it slow/I need a mental receipt to know this moment I owe/Do you mind if I steal a kiss? (Chop, chop)/A little souvenir, can I steal it from you?/To memorize the way you shock me/The way you move it here (Hey)/Just wanna feel it from you (Hey)”. So you might get a kiss stolen from you, but at least you’ll be gettin’ down.

Gerard Butler Will Try To Save The World In New ‘GEOSTORM’ Trailer

By Creative Media Times

Warner Bros. Pictures

Skydance Productions and Warner Bros. Pictures has released a new trailer for ‘Geostorm’, the big budget disaster action sci-fi from producer Dean Devlin about weather controlling satellites, and it is big as one can imagine. Gerard Butler leads the cast as a scientist who is out to save the world from catastrophes.

Here is the synopsis for Geostorm:

After an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But now, something has gone wrong—the system built to protect the Earth is attacking it, and it’s a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything…and everyone along with it.

The trailer shows plenty of humor, quite a relief from disaster flicks that take itself seriously. The film’s marketing also puts “From The Producer of Independence Day” front and center. That is of course “Dean Devlin” in his feature debut as a director. Devlin also co-wrote and produced the film. So there is plenty of potential for a breakout hit here.

Also starring Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris and Andy García, Geostorm will be in theaters on October 20th.
