Producers Guild Awards Announced Nominees

By Creative Media Times

producersguild.org

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) has announced nominations for the 29th Annual Producers Guild Awards on Friday.

This year, however, 11 films are vying for The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, which means there was a tie during the voting process.

Those in contention include The Big Sick,” “Call Me by Your Name,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “I, Tonya,” “Lady Bird,” “Molly’s Game,” “The Post,” “The Shape of Water,” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” and “Wonder Woman”.

Comprised of roughly 7,500 members, PGA is historically a good Oscar bellwether: in the last 10 years, the Zanuck award winner matched with that of the Academy Award best picture, disagreeing just the last two years when La La Land (2016) and The Big Short (2015) won the PGA while the Oscars went to Moonlight in 2016 and Spotlight the prior year.

This bodes well for “The Shape of Water,” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” and “The Post” which seem to emerged as front-runners during the awards season. But the list is not without any surprises as one of the year’s biggest boxoffice hits, “Wonder Woman” also made the cut.

The winner will be announced during the Producers Guild Awards ceremony on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, CA.

Album Review: Paloma Faith: The Architect

By Niy Birden

RCA – Epic

Let it be known: Paloma Faith is ready to make her mark as an R&B popstar. Maybe not quite like Bruno Mars aesthetically, but with the same musical foundation and performance attitude.

And this time, it is imperative for our best interests that we pay complete attention.

With 4 albums in the game and more than 20 years as a performer, it is really quite a surprise that she hasn’t gotten up to the ranks such as her other fellow female British performers, like Adele and other singer songwriters. Even though her sound and imagery were quite literally similar to a circus act (which makes sense considering that she was a magician’s assistant), she had the full package: chops, dance skills, and the looks. But somehow, she was heavily overlooked.

Not anymore.

Debuting at number one on the UK Albums Chart and selling over 40,000 copies, this is her first UK charting album.

The Architect, Paloma’s newest album, is a statement that is finding a unique spot amongst the 2017 album releases in the mainstream R&B and pop world.

It is a joyful surprise in many ways. With the album title being released in 2016 after a statement about her hiatus following her childbirth, many people did not expect to hear from our friendly singer from across the pond for quite some time.

Disney Releases New Image From “Mary Poppins Returns”

By Creative Media Times

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Mary Poppins and kids take a joyride in a new image recently released by Disney on twitter.

The upcoming musical fantasy sequel takes place 25 years after the original 1964 film “Mary Poppins”, which featured Julie Andrews in the role of Mary Poppins.

Set in 1930s Depression-era London, “Mary Poppins Returns” stars Emily Blunt as the titular magical and loving nanny while Broadway’s “Hamilton” creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda plays Poppin’s lamplighter friend Jack who’s an apprentice to Bert (originally played by Dick Van Dyke) from the original film. Meryl Streep is also in the film as Mary’s cousin Topsy Turvy-Poppins.

The sequel will see Poppins, the former nanny of now grown-up Jane (Emily Mortimer) and Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw), re-visiting the family after Michael suffers a personal tragedy and needing the help of their former nanny.

The fun-looking image shows Poppins and Jack taking the three children of Michael Banks, John (Nathanael Saleh), Annabel (Pixie Davies), and Georgie (Joel Dawson) on an adventure ride by laying a ladder across the seat of a bicycle.

The film reunites director Rob Marshall with Disney’s hit musical “Into the Woods” producers John DeLuca, and Marc Platt. Loosely based on the books by P. L. Travers, the screenplay was written by David Magee. Colin Firth and Angela Lansbury co-star in the sequel.

Mary Poppins Returns is set to hit theaters Dec. 25, 2018.

‘The Last Jedi’ To Close 2017 With A Bang

By Armando

Lucasfilm Ltd. – Walt Disney Studios

Its certainly not surprising for a Star Wars movie to top the year-end boxoffice list. Save for Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones in 2002, every single episode in the Star Wars series has topped the annual box-office list since it all began in 1977.

Still, to do it in mere 3 weekends is impressive. As of today, Wednesday Dec 28, boxoffice.com is reporting that the second installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy is at $444.9 million domestically after another $21.5 million on Wedneday.

As 2017 draws to a close, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is expected to lead the upcoming weekend once again, with estimates around $57 million per boxofficemojo.com. That should be enough to surpass Beauty and the Beast’s $504 million and end the year as the top grossing domestic film, just in time before New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Overseas, Luke Skywalker and company is just as potent: the film is expected to cross $900m today and will join the $1 billion club in the next few days, most likely and quite fittingly on Sunday, the last day of the year.

The Last Jedi’s boxoffice haul marks the third year in a row that a Star Wars film closed the year on top after 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and last year’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”

Other films also making noise are Dwayne Johnson’s action comedy “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” and Universal’s “Pitch Perfect 3″, the third and final film in the Pitch Perfect trilogy. Both are expected to finish strong this weekend in the 2nd and 3rd spot respectively.
