Gigi Hadid, Appropriation or Progress?

By: Andrew Van Wilpe

The American fashion model, Gigi Hadid has come under some scrutiny, in recent days, following the release of the cover of Vogue Arabia’s first edition. In the black and white cover photo, the model sported a beaded veil, bare shouldered. Inside the magazine there is another photo of Gigi dressed in a more traditional looking, hot pink and fuchsia hijab.

Although, Gigi is of Palestinian decent, coming from her father’s side, she is not of the Muslim faith. The critics accuse this 21-year-old model and Vogue of religious appropriation. Her critics are upset because they believe Gigi and Vogue are glamourizing something that other women are criticized for. One critic tweeted, “So Gigi is getting praised for wearing a Hijab bc “fashion” while women who actually wear Hijab are attacked, shamed, and threatened?”

The question from most of the critics is, “why Vogue did not choose an actual Muslim model for this cover?” It seems the issue is more about representation. Critics believe Vogue should have used a Muslim model if they wanted to avoid this controversy and wanted to promote inclusion.

New ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ shows a young Jack Sparrow

By Armando

The trailer, which premiered on Ellen this week, shows some of the origin of Javier Bardem’s villain, Captain Armando Salazar, and his encounter with a young Sparrow. “He took everything from me and filled me with rage,” says Salazar. We then learn that this encounter shaped Sparrow’s character and why he’s being chased. The trailer then continues with a grown-up Sparrow and more action on the highs seas.

This time around, there’s a lot more scenes in the trailer showing Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow, who’s been hidden away in most of the movie’s marketing. We also see the return of Geoffrey Rush’s Barbosa and Orlando Bloom’s Captain Will Turner.

I’m not entirely sure if the young Sparrow is CG for what appears to be a series of flashback scenes. Looking at the movie’s IMDB page, there’s no hint of who might be playing that role. But all in all, it looks like a fun new installment in the swashbuckling series. Despite diminishing returns on the domestic front, Sparrow and the ‘Pirates’ continue to be a major international attraction, with almost 77% of the global box-office gross of the last installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides coming from foreign markets. The movie also has a new synopsis:

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

Dead Men Tell No Tales is directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg. Starring Johnny Depp, Kaya Scodelario, Orlando Bloom and Javier Bardem, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ “final adventure begins” on May 26.

Pop Music Today

By: Shane Brooks

Today, it seems, pop music is the “bread and butter”, so to speak, of American entertainment. Popular music has always been this way whether it be Louis Armstrong with swing music, Elvis with rock music, The Beatles or Katy Perry.

However, popular music has never had such a strong influence on our culture, fashion and even politics then it has today. We let our popular artists be our voice. Artists like Katy Perry or Lady Gaga use their platform to spread the message of female empowerment or the importance of self-expression.

Whereas, artists like Kanye West and Chance the Rapper use their platform to spread the message of faith and religion. Other popular artists sing about having a good time, relationships and other relatable topics, which is why these songs get so popular. Now, none of these topics areparticularly bad things, yet, there is a huge divide between pop music fans and fans of other genres of music.
