“Eighth Grade,” “First Reformed” Lead “2019 Independent Spirit Awards Noms

The Film Independent Spirit Awards unveiled 2018’s list of nominees, providing an early look at how the awards season is shaping up leading to the academy awards.

At the top of this list are “Eighth Grade,” “First Reformed,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Leave No Trace” and “You Were Never Really Here” all of which received best picture nominations.

“We The Animals,” from director Jeremiah Zagar and based on the novel of the same name by Justin Torres, received the most nominations with five.

This summer’s documentary hit “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” received documentary nomination along with Minding the Gap, Of Fathers and Sons, Hale County, On Her Shoulders and Shirkers.

The nominees were announced at Los Angeles’ W Hotel by Crazy Rich Asians actress Gemma Chan and Saturday Night Live alumna Molly Shannon.

The 34th Spirit Awards ceremony will be held on their usual home at the beach in Santa Monica and will air on IFC at 2 p.m. PT on Feb. 23.

Watch Official Trailer For Live-Action “Dumbo” Film

The official trailer for “Dumbo” debuted during the CMA Awards on ABC Wednesday night.

The upcoming fantasy adventure film is the latest Disney property getting a live-action makeover. Dumbo is a re-imagined version of the Walt Disney’s 1941 animated film of the same name, which was based on a novel written by Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl and nd illustrated by Helen Durney.

The film is Tim Burton’s first directorial effort since 2016’s “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” which was an adaptation of a 2011 contemporary fantasy novel of the same name.

The film features an impressive cast including Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, Nico Parker, Alan Arkin, Joseph Gatt, Finley Hobbins, Sandy Martin, and Michael Keaton as the ruthless villain who is set to exploit the titular elephant.

Dumbo is slated to soar into theaters on March 29, 2019.

Here is the film’s synopsis:
The story follows Holt Farrier, a former circus star and war veteran, who has been enlisted by circus owner Max Medici to care for a newborn elephant with oversized ears. The baby elephant’s ears are a laughingstock and embarrassment to the already struggling circus. That is, until Holt’s children discover that Dumbo can fly! Aerial artist Colette Marchant and entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere then swoop in to make Dumbo, the flying elephant, a star.

“Wonder Park” Trailer Released

Paramount Pictures’ upcoming animated comedy adventure features the voices of Brianna Denski, Jennifer Garner, Ken Hudson Campbell, Kenan Thompson, Mila Kunis, John Oliver, Ken Jeong, Matthew Broderick, Kath Soucie, and Norbert Leo Butz.

Wonder Park tells the story of young an orphaned optimistic, imaginative girl who discovers an abandoned fantastical amusement park.

After the film’s theatrical release, an animated series based on the film will debut on Nickelodeon. This will follow the footsteps of “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius” and “Barnyard” as animated movies turned tv series.

Wonder Park is set for release on March 15, 2019 by Paramount Pictures.

‘Toy Story 4’ Teaser Trailer Highlights New Character

Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Slinky Dog and Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head have some company in the upcoming animated comedy film, as Disney and Pixar releases the first teaser for “Toy Story 4.”

The teaser introduces an adorable and scared spork named Forky, voiced by Tony Hale. “I don’t belong here!,” Forky says in trailer, trying to leave.

The film, which continues the events from Toy Story 3, also features the return of voices of Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz, Joan Cusack as Jessie, and Estelle Harris as the Potato Heads. Josh Cooley directs the film from Stephany Folsom’s script.

Disney also released animated short as a reaction to the teaser which featured Ducky and Bunny as voiced by comedy duo Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.

“Toy Story 4” is set for release on June 21.

Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called “Forky” to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy.

Comic Book Icon Stan Lee Dies at 95

Legendary comic-book writer, editor, film executive producer, actor, and publisher passed away at the age of 95, various sources are reporting this morning.

An ambulance was reportedly called to his home at the Hollywood Hills this morning and was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Stan Lee’s daughter broke the news about her father’s passing to TMZ.

Lee started as an assistant in 1939 at Timely Comics, the earliest comic book arm of American publisher Martin Goodman. The entity would later be known as Marvel Comics in the 1960s.

Throughout this period, together with other great comic book artists Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he would create iconic comic book characters such as Spider Man, The Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Black Panther, the X-Men, The Incredible Hulk among many others.

Lee received a National Medal of Arts in 2008 and was inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 1994.

He has also made cameo appearances in every Marvel movie.

Stan Lee is survived by his daughter Joan Celia “J. C.” Lee.

Explorer Meets Bigfoot In ‘Missing Link’ Trailer

Laika, the studio behind the incredible film Kubo and the Two Strings has released the first trailer for its upcoming globetrotting comedy adventure ‘Missing Link’ and it looks like an amusing “adventure of mythical proportions.”

The stunning stop-motion film follows an explorer named Sir Lionel Frost, a myths and monsters investigator as he tracks down the fabled creature Mr Link who is also looking to meet his long lost relatives.

Along with another adventurer Adelina Fortnight, the three embarks on an adventure and encounter other characters along the way.

The studio is also other academy award nominated gems “The Boxtrolls,” “ParaNorman” and “Coraline”.

Written and directed by Chris Butler, the writer of Kubo and the Two Strings, ‘Missing Link’ is voiced by Hugh Jackman as the lead adventurer and Zach ​Galifianakis as Mr. Link.

Also in the film are the voices of Zoe Saldana, David Wailliams, Timothy Olyphant, Emma Thompson, Ching Valdes-Aran, Matt Lucas, Stephen Fry, and Amrita Acharia.

Annapurna Pictures is releasing “Missing Link” in Spring of 2019.

166 Documentary Features Submitted For Academy Awards Consideration

Won’t You Be My Neighbor? – Focus Features

A total of 166 feature documentaries been submitted for consideration in the Documentary Feature category, the Academy announced today.

Among those submitted are Morgan Neville’s Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, Steve Loveridge’s Matangi/Maya/M.I.A., and Susan Lacy’s Jane Fonda in Five Acts.

A shortlist of 15 documentaries will be announced on Dec. 17 while the final list of nominees will be revealed on Jan. 22. The 91st Academy Awards is set to be held on Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, CA.

There are some doc features that haven’t had qualifying Los Angeles and New York theatrical runs. Those that were submitted are required to comply with the qualifying requirements to move forward into the voting portion. Documentary features are also qualified for Best Picture and other categories.

“The Secret Life Of Pets 2” Trailer

Max the dog and the gang are back in action “The Secret Life of Pets 2” and today, Illumination Entertainment has released the film’s first trailer.

Though not much info is revealed regarding the plot, the sequel seem to follow up the events of the 2016 film. This time, we see Max taking a good stroll in town only to realize that they’re visiting the vet. “You tricked me!,” he protested.

“We love our pets, but how well do we really know them?,” the trailer asks. And while inside the room, he encounters some very interesting pet patients.

The original Secret Life of Pets film was a global blockbuster back in 2016, grossing $875 million worldwide on a reasonably tight $75 million budget.

Illumination is sure to continue its hit streak after four very successful Despicable Me films, including the spin-off film Minions.

Helmed by the original’s director Chris Renaud, the film brings back writer Brian Lynch, and the cast reprising their roles, such as Eric Stonestreet as Duke the mongrel who lives with Max, Jenny Slate as Gidget the Pomeranian and Max’s girlfriend, Kevin Hart as Snowball the rabbit and former flushed pet, Lake Bell as Chloe the tabby cat and one of Max’s friends.

The animated film is set for release on June 7, 2019.

Awesome New “Aquaman” Character Posters Released

Nearly a month away from Aquaman’s release, Warner Bros. Pictures has released character posters for the film, thereby officially introducing some of its main characters.

Here we see Jason Momoa’s Aquaman/Arthur Curry, in his green and orange suit, which looks more faithful to his traditional look than what we saw in Justice League.

Also getting their own posters are Princess Mera, Queen Atlanna, Vulko, King Nereus, King Orm and Black Manta.

Willem Dafoe, Temuera Morrison, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Nicole Kidman co-star in film. Directed by James Wan (The Conjuring, Furious 7), the film’s screenplay was written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall.

“Aquaman” is set to dive into theaters December 21st, 2018.

Documentary Film ‘The Public Image Is Rotten’

The new documentary film made its North American theatrical premiere on Sept. 14 in New York City at The Metrograph.

From Abramorama and Verisimilitude, ‘The Public Image Is Rotten’ film tells the story of music icon John Lydon and his pioneering group Public Image Ltd (PiL) with a level of depth and intimacy never-before-seen.

Loaded with electrifying archival performance and interview footage, ‘The Public Image Is Rotten’ was directed by Tabbert Fiiller and produced by Verisimilitude’s Tyler Brodie and Hunter Gray as well as Phaedon Papadopoulos and Fiiller.

The film features in-depth interviews with John Lydon, former and current Public Image Ltd bandmates as well as Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Ad-Rock (Beastie Boys) and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) among others.
